Off season blues

I'm having a little off season blues and thought I'd share a video from a few years back that may bring a smile to F1 fans. Anyone remember F1 driver Riccardo Patrese? This is a good one. Hope you enjoy!

The Official Formula One Thread!

That is a great video and she was quite a good sport during sponsor hot laps.

Well, up until the bras d'honneur…

LOL! Great vid!

Barbara Walters was heard screaming all around the track at Lime Rock Park during lunch when Paul Newman took her for a few laps around. We were all LOL'ing.

Glad everyone liked that video. Despite the new car launches this week, we all know they will looked much different once testing and the Bahrain GP begin and I'm still watching old F1 youtube videos in the off season...

We all know about the "unconventional" ending to the Abu Dhabi race of 2021, but I came across a video that is 40 years old from the 1982 Monaco GP that was incredibly odd as well. It was before my time as an F1 fan and the fact that Riccardo Patrese is also involved in this video as well is purely coincidental.

The Official Formula One Thread!

Rain…the great equalizer of dominant cars.

Fuel…the strategists’ migraine.

Thanks for sharing that. I think it also was the race with the fewest cars making the full distance.

Fellow Brit, Lewis Hamilton supporter, former F1 driver and SKY F1 contributor, Karun Chandkok closely examines what happened in Abu Dhabi and puts no blame on Masi due to unexpected fire to Latifi's car while disabled and explains the rules for red flag.

https://www.express.co.uk/sport/f1-a...n-chandhok/amp

Lewis Hamilton may have lost F1 title due to brake fire - Michael Masi was 'screwed over'

Lewis Hamilton may have lost the 2021 F1 world title after Nicholas Latifi's brakes caught fire in the immediate aftermath of his crash at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. That's the verdict of F1 pundit Karun Chandhok who has claimed FIA race director Michael Masi was "screwed over” by the fire as it took marshals longer to clear up the wreckage. It meant the safety car had to be left out “longer than originally planned”, creating confusion around whether the lapped cars could overtake Hamilton.

Chandhok added the delay also meant the race could no longer be red-flagged as rules around the minimum restart time had been exceeded.

Speaking to Express Sport, he said: “I have come back this year and had a few conversions and phone calls with people.

“I think what happened was Latifi crashed and Masi had a choice, at that point you do a safety car or red flag.

“He looked at the incident and thought, ‘that should be relatively quick to clear up’.

“There is a recovery vehicle right there, there is an escape road right there, it should be a quick recovery so there should be a safety car.

“That is fine, that is not an unusual decision to have made.

“I think where he got a bit screwed over really is that the brakes caught fire on the car as they were trying to take it off the track

“So the marshals had to jump on and get the fire extinguisher out obviously, that dumped a load of stuff onto the track.

“That, therefore, left Michael in a position of, ‘ah I've committed to this part of the safety car, now this has happened we have got to leave the safety car out for longer than I originally planned’.

“He couldn't have red-flagged it at that point, because as per the procedure of the red flag you have to do an out-lap as well as a timed lap.

“So if he had red-flagged it, we wouldn't have had a restart.”

As the safety car pulled in with one lap to go, Verstappen was on a set of the brand new soft tyres while Hamilton had medium tyres which had already managed over 40 laps.

Hamilton held on for just five corners before Verstappen took the lead at turn five en-route to his first title.

After the race, Latifi spoke openly on social media about receiving “death threats” and “abuse” as a result of the repercussions of his last-minute crash.

He said: “It only takes one incident at the wrong time to have things completely blown out of proportion and bring out the worst in people who are so-called 'fans' of the sport.

“What shocked me was the extreme tone of the hate, abuse, and even the death threats I received.

“To the people who don't understand or don't agree with that, that's fine with me.

“You can have your opinion. But to use those opinions to fuel hatred, abuse and threats of violence, not only to me, but to those closest to me as well, tells me these people are not true fans of the sport.”

Luis was IN FRONT and leading... no one was screwed over, except Verstappen in the British GP.
Hey Mercedes... you were undercut for new tires, it was your fault.

The new Alpha Tauri and Aston cars look incredible and the aero changes are significant. I'm fired up for the season to start. Only 4.5 weeks til Bahrain.

So funny you mention that. I was at that race in 1982 (as well as the race in 1983) and in 1982 was watching from Le Rocher. From up there, I had no idea what was going on. Without a doubt, one of the craziest finishes ever.

Besides, F1 is now part of the Sports Entertainment Network.

I applaud the sentiment, but I think it’ll be hard when you see the FIA Commission’s report & the RD control changes to come.

BTW: Masi wore a Platona throughout recent Geneva meetings - that’s my mandatory Rolex content to this element of the F1 discussions

But it truly was fun while it lasted.

Still better than eSport (for now).

That would be nice but it's still unresolved as it relates to what the FIA is going to do and continued issues with death threats.

When a driver has to have a security detail to protect him from irrational Hamilton fans after crashing into a wall, things have gotten out of hand... (not placing any blame on LH personally, just pointing out the sad state of affairs in what is supposed to be sport and entertainment). If Latifi is getting death threats I would imagine Verstappen and Masi received death threats as well but elected to not discuss them in public. This is where we're at at this point... sad.

Sorry to hear F1 felt a 'token sacrifice' had to be made. Nice entertainment news timing just before the start of a new season, so very topical with perfect timing for promoting the sport into the 2023 season

When in doubt, pivot.

There’s more to it than that but I get the impression it leaves to general public.

As a driver I could make 2 mistakes per lap and only had to answer to myself and my team. The only lost equity was my finishing position.

Upon entering the Race Official role, I have every team, every driver, every marshal and others to explain my decisions. If the code was broken, all lose equity and trust.

Hubris in that final radio call to Wolfe was a telling remark - a long season capped by a last lap debacle wore away all the enamel on already thin veneers.

Now the tandem RDs and virtual remote senior advisors are a new challenge to consistent race calls.
