I used to be a police officer/deputy sheriff. At that job, I wore a G-Shock. A coworker used to wear a Datejust, and I told him he should get a more durable watch. He then showed up with a non-date Sub (his wife had money - he drove a Jaguar), claiming it was far more durable than my Casio. I bet him $100 it wasn't and he took the bet. I then took off my G-Shock, threw it down on the concrete ground as hard as I could, then said, "Your turn." He pulled out his wallet and helped start my Rolex fund!

Now I'm in outside sales dealing with attorneys. They make far more than me, and probably don't think of a Rolex as significant an "investment/expenditure" as most of us in this forum do. Many also wear Rolex, and when I ask, they say, "because it's the best" and have no other knowledge about the watch. Same type of people who buy a Porsche, but have no professional driver's training.

Currently I'm an IT Manager & Web Developer at a Canadian university. Despite being a geek, I am a suit & tie guy every day, so my recently received Submariner never leaves my wrist.

Since there's a lot of 'service' talk, I am also ex-Navy for the Canadian Forces.

This is my old office.

I do human resources strategic planning for the U.S. Army. Rotate my Rolex Explorer I, Omega SMP and Nomos Ludwig on a daily basis. A No-Date Sub is calling to me to get into the rotation !

I used to work for Exxon and now manage a small business. I am never without my 1993 GMT II. Have to be careful as crooks are targeting expensive watches and cell phones in this area,

I am a police officer; I have been an officer for fourteen years. I love my job and I enjoy helping people. I don't do traffic as I am too busy working cases and hunting high target/wanted suspects usually people who are wanted for felony crimes. So no cracks about your last ticket as I had nothing to do with it.

I wear my SD every day in uniform nobody ever pays attention to it.

I work in the smoking rubble that is what's left of the US mortgage business. On my 4th job so far this year and looking for another.

I've worn my watch everyday since my wife gave it to me. It often gives me a cofidence boost when selling myself at one of my many job interviews.

I have an MBA degree from USA, but I'm still struggle with my career. Coming from other country is a drawback for me when I try to hold a decent job in California. Many companies gave me much lower compensation comparing with that of other American employees.

Being raised in a family that never have to worry about $ since my father is a good provider is a luxury but it makes me softer than I would like to me. Thankfully, I'm married with a great man who never puts pressure on me with my career. He only ask me not to accept any low level position or any job that would degrade myself or my family. So, I'm now only trading stocks now and then and I don't need to bow to anybody. Cheers.

Job for a living

Like many on the list I have no problem wearing my watch at work. I have had two careers, on my second now, sort of a retirement one. First one was as a wildlife reasearch biologist working with marine mammals and sea turtles. In and out of the water all the time and always wore my watches at work, except my tow dress watches (ebel and Bucherer). i was the founder and research director for a non-profit so there were times that I had to go to the cocktail things for fund raising and the Sub was always appropaite to those sort of things, look more like the part I guess. My second career is managing 3 marinas in East Hampton, NY (yeah I know put the nose up at that address). However again I have had no promlems with wearing any of my watches. I wear them for me and enjoy them so what do i care of others thoughts. Have to say though that I lost a very favorite watch once on a sailboat of mine. I was diving off the side holding onto the rigging and the watch caught on the wire rigging and ripped off my wrist. i spent two hours diving on the bottom around the boat looking for it to no avail. Ever since i am careful about which watch i wear when day asiling.
Cheers

Have been in the advertising agency business for about 5 years just before moving from the midwest to NY (Long Island) - now a Marketing Manager for a world-class wine producer and importer.

My watch - soon to be (Sat. 12/22) a SS Sub Date with CRM (M Series)

You sound like a great person, keep your head up and go after your dreams. As a Police Officer, I too know what it is to be on the lower pay scale of life. With your positive attitude, I know you will go far in life it is a cycle that seems to repeat itself over and over I have seen it with many people why not you too? The way I see it America is lucky to have you. I wish you and your family well.

Movieman, perhaps you might neet to get a bit more familiar with the tone of the forum. Certainly opinions are welcome, but it's understood that no one is entitled to making insults, and attacks on one another are not tolerated by the moderators. There are more diplomatic ways to get one's point across.

Don't try to be a dictator? That strikes me a little as coming out of left field. I wonder; why on earth are you moved to say such a thing?

I have flown helicopters for 38 years, EMS helicopters for 24 years, and I have worn my 1986 GMT Master II at work for 21 years.

I keep my 24 hour hand set to GMT, but it has never served me in my job, as I fly very locally and don't deal with the Air Traffic Conrol System very often.

I have had only two negative comments about my GMT Master II over the years, and both from fellow helicopter pilots who said their throwaway plastic watches kept better time than my Rolex, and they thought I looked like a pretentious, over-compensating idiot (or words to that effect).

Several of my supervisors and managers wear Rolex.
One of my supervisors wore a fake Rolex for awhile and then stopped.

On a few occasions I've met people wearing Rolex, and they notice mine and I notice theirs, and it makes for a nice ice-breaker and common interest.

In my job I relate to Emergency Room Doctors quite frequently, and when they notice my watch, they warm up to me a little more, possibly because they see me then as more of a professional and less of a "driver."

I've also noticed, when relating to Doctors and Dentists as a patient, they seem to take more personal interest in me when they notice my watch, but also when they notice my occupation on my medical records.
I think Doctors and Dentists try to treat everyone the same, with compassion and respect, but I've noticed this anyway, that they treat me differently, although I might have imagined it.

Does anyone else see a change in how people relate to them after they notice the watch?
