Prices slump by up to 50% for discontinued Rolex watches (Watchpro)

One of their recent auction looks a bit sus. There was a VC 4500V Rose Gold that ended yesterday where some dude bid himself up from 57k all the way to 65k with no competition? Profile seems to indicate new member since 2023, zero group posts, and unless they deleted some competitive bids (comments), how on earth does that even make sense?

One word for you.

Demographics.

Go research that and then see how long you think your never will last.

China is facing economic collapse by 2030. Half its population gone by 2050.
70% of countries are on course for a similar demographic challenge and no way to fix it.

The world economy will be vastly different by 2030. Many are saying an almost total end to globalism as we know it.

Luxury goods are not going to ride that well.

This podcast explains it quite well. Peter Ziehan has some very good points to consider.

Seen it before. A lot of dealers use the auctions to artificially pump up pricing.

Can’t tell you how many times I see a piece go at auction for notably higher than another recent listing for the same watch

Something to keep in mind wrt auctions on the group is the "top 3 bids are binding" rule. If a seller's friend creates a bidding war and withdraws after "winning", the 2nd and 3rd highest bidders would still be on the hook or risk being removed from the group.

One of my friends had the 3rd or 4th highest bid on a recent auction and received a message from the highest bidder asking if he would be interested in purchasing instead. Insultingly, the highest bidder acted like he was doing my friend a favor, and offered him the "opportunity" to buy the watch at the winning bid (significantly higher than my friend's bid). When my friend refused, the winner then offered to cover the difference b/w my friend's original bid and the winning bid. My friend did go through with the deal, but the whole ordeal seemed very rigged (BTW the seller and winning bidder were both established RWB members).

Wow. That's basically a shill bidding conspiracy. The fact that the opening offer to purchase was anything other than his only binding offer is totally suspect and ridiculous.

At some point after an auction ends one has to be absolved of being bound to purchase as he may have bid on other auctions by this point.

I was on that bid but stop at $54500 (MSRP) because I think some dealers are helping each others by make it goes higher and higher.

It seems stupid that nobody else bid after $57k but that guy kept going higher by himself, he probably was the owner of that watch and hope that somebody will go higher than him.

Thanks, I hope some more is coming in the near future. I think probably this auction was trying to test the market price for this model.

VC Overseas blue dial full set great condition sold for 25k.

Also, anyone notice that a lot of recent sales are going to guys who recently joined (<3 months ago)? It makes sense that these folks are less plugged in, and are buying at prices that most veterans wouldn’t be comfortable with.

I have been following the vintage Rolex market for a long time and personally I don't think 5 digit GMTs will hold much above 8k.

I did not follow the neo-vintage models very closely, but generally there used to be very little demand for GMTs compared to other sports models, especially the 5 digit pieces. I was extremely surprised when they shot through the roof in the last few years.

Imo neither 5 digit GMTs nor Subs are going to stabilize above 10k, nor should they tbh.

I purchased a NOS 16710 in 2016 for 8250. That was a deal back then. If prices get back to where they were 7 years ago there are much bigger financial problems in the world than losing a few thousand on a watch.

Just out of intereet I contacted a few grey sellers to see how much I could hypothetically sell me 15500 for. If anyone is interested in the latest provided sale price, ping me.

I am still debating whether to go through with it - making potential room for another acquisition

Anyone catch the drama between TPG and a pretty active dealer on MODA? Pretty concerning the dealer is still a member and nothing has been addressed in the group.

Video is up on TPG’s YouTube. Long story short (all of this is alleged BTW), a particular dealer from MODA tried sticking TPG with a fake Daytona (over $100k). When TPG called him to tell him it was fake the guy acted surprised and asked for the watch back but TPG refused to give it back (because he assumed the guy was going to try to pawn it off to an unsuspecting buyer). All kind of drama ensued and ended with TPG confronting the guy at the Vegas watch show.

My concern is it seems this dealer knew the watch was fake (perhaps because he bought it originally thinking it was real) and seemed to be attempting to scam someone else to try to recover his loss. TPG also made reference to this guy having a drug problem.

There was a cryptic post by Vadim earlier today about burning bridges with dealers and someone in the comments mentioned this incident and I just went back to see if there was any response and the comment was deleted (really strange).

Wow. Anthony rises like the Phoenix and cleans up the streets

It's shocking this network of supposedly legit dealers are mad they can't recirculate a fake to recoup losses.

I have to remind RE the FB group that I have spotted and reported fake watches and they were not removed. The post was left up with all of its "so hot" comments by clueless patrons that can't even tell if the product is real or not.

Haha who knows… could it have all been a ruse for content—maybe. If not, why they hell haven’t they booted the dealer form Moda? I saw that someone posted something mentioning all this happened outside Moda (like that means it’s ok and shouldn’t be any concern).

I've reported fakes. Nothing happened. That term "alliance" makes me think otherwise.

I like to window shop there but in the times I've come close to spending my money I've decided against it. I just don't trust it.

Do you think $1-2M worth of plastic wrapped brand new rose gold Pateks dangling on that guys hand were all real? I have my doubts unless you're an AD that they can be sourced legit simultaneously like that. Probably very very well made superfakes.
