Hey guys I need your help ..
I know it’s not a pair of JL, GG, EG, C and J or any
really fine upper echelon men’s shoes but they are a
gift .

AE Park Avenues in Walnut: calfskin leather
Which ones would you keep , I got 2 pair in Walnut
and kind of really like both . I’m not keeping 2 pair
of the same model , lol ...
The ones on the right have a little character on the cap toes
right out of the box the other is pretty even in color all around.
What say the experts ? I believe they are a little burnished
on the cap toe ? They also have the same theme going around
the shoe, on the right . On the left it’s pretty even in color.
Thoughts ?

Thanks in advance for your opinions . They both fit the same
so that’s not an issue ...
Top pic is most true to color , bottom pic I edited a
little lighter to get s better idea of the color when looking
at it in person.

To me the left will show marks more, the right will conceal them. So it depends how you wear shoes. I tend to scuff mine a bit so i would go with the burnished ones on the right. Otherwise it is a toss-up.

Could depend on how addicted you are to shoe polish. Er, polishing.

Both could use a polish right out of the box. But the pair on the left is more of an open canvas if you're into adding your own patina. The burnishing on the pair on the right leaves less room for that, but has more character to start, so it's ready for prime time as-is. Depends on which end of the spectrum you're on.

I'm addicted to polish (er, polishing), and like to patina my shoes, so for me the left pair would be a better choice.

edit:
No, I admit it, I am addicted to polish.

Thank you gentlemen for your input .
I now recall the Kirby Allison video where he talks
about adding your own character to the shoes
with polishing and age . Whilst I like the
burnished ones out of the box I think I will keep
the others and add character to them as they age.
Tough choice cause they’re both beautiful...

Top pair for me.

Also because I much prefer dark brown/burgundy and find them to be much more elegant.

Cheers

Justin Fitzpatrick caramel calf leather cap toe brogues!
I must say they appear to be very well made .
Solid construction and they fit well .
These are my first brogues so we shall see but
I look forward to wearing them soon.

Justin Fitzpatrick started the shoe snob blog
in case anyone cares about that kind of stuff.

Packaging/box is nice, and 2 shoe bags included.

I'm a boot guy myself. I have a pair of casual white RL sneakers that I use a lot but several boots that I rotate around.

I have one nice pair of dress shoes, and a couple of decent ones, and I do want to expand my collection as I wear more formal wear.

I personally prefer English shoemaking. Not interested in fashion brands. I want most of my money to go towards quality. Crockett & Jones would be my aspirational brand. I prefer English clothing/products in general. Bond bias maybe but I have been very satisfied with the products I've bought over the years.

I'm a boot guy as well and English brands are my favorites also. However since I just plain like and very much appreciate nice footwear I go for shoes as well. C&J is an excellent choice especially when it comes to boots, however if and when you get that hankering you might want to check out Edward Green, Gaziano & Girling, and St Crispins. Oh, and if going extremely casual Viberg is an excellent choice although they are from Canada.

I’m jealous of you guys. Some great shoes here. And most of them look like they have lots of miles left on them. I’m a size 11 if anyone wants to downsize. I wish I could offer trades but nothing I’m not wearing is trade worthy, come to think of it, used shoes would be pretty tough to get second hand. I would guess they have confirmed to the users shape and might not be so comfortable second time around.

Great stuff, maybe you’ll get me shopping. Where should I go around Boston and south?

Dan,
I’ve been scouring the Internet for info on
the quality difference between Carmina and C & J when
it comes to a classic Oxford. EG is next level , maybe one day.
I’m looking in the $450 to $650 range.
Is C&J hand grade much better than say the main line
and or Carmina ? Is it worth it ? I’m looking at the Audley.
Was looking at the Hallam main line but then I saw the
Audley. The Carmina is the 80386 in the rain last .
Is it worth the extra coin to get the Audley or just try and
decide between the Carmina rain last or the Hallam ?
All three are exceptional Oxford’s I think.
I’m looking at the block color. I noticed I have a couple
of black patent leather Oxford’s but not a regular one.
I appreciate any of your wisdom you could pass on to me.
The main thing I’m looking for is quality and comfort , style is
up to me but all 3 of those models look nice to me.
Btw: I saw your handle on styleforum.

It is a slippery slope, once you've got 1 pair of nice shoes then the rest will follow. Already looking at a 3rd pair and I've only just started

I'm following suit...

I've always liked nice dress shoes but only recently
been delving into better quality and craftsmanship made shoes.

How would you rate Carmina vs C & J Bas ?

Read the post I addressed to Dan, I'm looking for a nice
pair of black oxfords... any insight ?

Although Carmina are good quality shoes if you buy the right C&J shoes then there is no doubt C&J are a cut above.

C&J makes more than just one line of shoes. If memory serves correctly it's Bench Grade, Hand Grade, and they even make shoes for Brooks Brothers under the name of Peal and Co. To further confuse they also used to make at least the Northcote boot in Cordovan under the Crockett and Jones label for Brooks Brothers. The Brooks Brothers Peal and Co shoes used to also include shoes from Alfred Sargent and I think it may at one time long ago include shoes from Edward Green. Anyway C&J Hand Grade and those labeled Crockett and Jones for Brooks Brothers were the top of their line.

I would say Carmina was pretty much on par with C&Js Bench Grade or Peal and Co shoes. But C&Js Hand Grade line was definitely a cut above Carmina.

I have a few Carmina as well as C&J and I might have a few more C&J shoes if it weren't for their shoe Lasts not being such a good fit for me. I do have a few of their boots though and their boots are extremely nice.

Understand, although you just can't beat the feeling of putting on a nice pair of boots or shoes.

I too have other hobbies as well but those are verboten here.

Do yourself a favor and spend sometime looking and researching various shoemakers and styles before just buying anything.

Most importantly find those that have the Lasts that fit you best.

Unfortunately that's more difficult if you don't happen to live in a good location.
