Sorry. Never thought people would not believe the pictures. Didn't even intend to post pictures. It was meant as friendly announcement.
But got drawn into that.
I know the locations I have been, and the watches worn on the wrist in those locations.
Have hardly ever taken wrists shots, the watches were tools to do a job. Only recently have the new models been bought, so again know wrist shots. And to be honest can't be bothered to take wrist shots of them all.

So not really enjoying the thread so don't think will post anymore.

No problem.

Here is one from the 'internet' just for you

Wrist shot at the South Pole. Reflected back from the ceremonial marker.

All the best; and will enjoy seeing your posts. You have made me feel very welcome. Many thanks.

Steve,
I've enjoyed your posts. I hope you'll continue to share the rest of your story. I know I've read enough 'which watch should I buy?' threads.

Ditto! I joined this forum in 2007 and haven't bought a a new watch in a couple of years. But it was just a couple of months ago that I FINALLY took a side by side of my collection. I did it for my 1000th post. I never got around getting more than two out of the bank vault at a time. It just worked out that I had my 1655 out for a rotation that this thread popped up. I've enjoyed this thread more than any in years. It would be a shame to end it now. But I can certainly understand....

What's with the barbs - they're actually quite unwelcoming and pointless.
Certainly not reflective of the majority of members.
Anyways, I'm enjoying this thread, aside from the insults.

Thanks, Nick! And all these years, no one has asked me to post a side by side. I just posted this for my 1000th. But my point is, on a lot of threads, I'll say "I've got one too or I like mine." I rarely post pictures because I'm a phone camera photographer at best. No one questions that I have that watch and most don't care. Now admittedly, this thread started off cryptically and did look like trolling. But it ended up with some amazing pictures, stories, humor, pole-dancing elves. and other stuff. Besides, worst case scenario: toomuchtalk is a 15 year old girl in Leeds with an iPad and a bus pass and is posting this stuff. (Which is not true, but believe what you want.) Where's the blood? I don't see any bones sticking out or severed limbs. And we're wondering if its safe to _____ or should I get this ______ or when the SS Pepsi C is coming out. With a little patience, this could have unfolded and we might have had a really interesting contributor here....

Yes!!

Steve, keep posting. We haven't had a thread this interesting for a long time. If one or two people can't believe that your life is more interesting than theirs, then so be it. Don't deprive the rest of us of your experiences and watches!

Hi,

Thanks.

Since 1991 I have been on over 13 major expeditions. To the following destinations;

Iceland, Norway, Greenland, Antarctica, South America, Africa, and Europe. On those expeditions I have used the following watches;

Submariner 16610; bought on 15/7/1990
Explorer 16570 black and white dial
GMT master 2 16710
Sea Dweller 16600

All bought from the same AD in the UK.

I used Rolexs as we needed a reliable time piece as we had no external time reference.

I have since 'collected' the expedition watches. Plus patek and an IWC.

I collect the old rolex adverts as I have been privileged to meet some of the people in them.

To me rolex is about exploration, and that's what I do; run an expedition company.

Photo of me planning an expedition in Norway with the submariner on wrist-for those that feel the need for one:) again poor photo because it's from a slide..
All the best Steve

frankly, its pretty sad to see some of the ridiculous negativism here.

complain to the OP about lack of pictures, he post pictures.

complain to the OP that the pictures aren't genuine. he rightly responds that its up to each person to believe their authenticity or not.

complain to the OP about the quality or locale that some pics were taken at (i.e. AD). well, a lot of people (particularly those with only 80 posts) dont spend a whole lot of time taking wristies for the purposes of sharing on the forum and only have a limited number.

cant we have room for complete watch nuts who want to post daily shots in idyllic surroundings and for those who are passionate about their watches but dont necessarily invest in photography of the same?

to be totally honest, i find these pics massively more interesting than vast majority of unending daily's on here (not that i want those to end either, but come on...)

i hope the OP continues to post these interesting shots.

That's a compliment; knowing also your history.

I love the rolex expedition watch and it's history because of what they stand for. I have not been on an expedition for a while; as I have concentrated on running an expedition business.
Although I collect the watches; I don't actually get worked up by the technical side of the watches. And until I came across this forum did not think people took wrist shots of their watches, I took one at the pole as it was a special moment and a life long ambition.
I love the Churchill quote as in 1996 I was awarded a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship for an expedition to the arctic.
On that trip I wore a submariner; great for expeditions as you can turn the bezel and measure the length of each leg on the trek. Walk 55 minutes and rest for 5 minutes..
And here is that watch. Photo taken in my front room on the Operational a Navigation Chart for Greenland. The map we use for Greenland expeditions.

Yes, we have to remember that it's not "normal" to constantly take pictures of your watch on your wrist.

We always talk about how Rolex produces such a great line of "tool watches", and yet most of our Rolexes never leave the home or office, aside from maybe a vacation to the beach somewhere. Here is a gentleman who truly uses watches as they were intended because they ARE in fact great tools, not because he wants to take wrist shots. I love it!

I doubt that Ed Viesturs (one of my heroes) ever takes wrist shots of his Explorer II. If he ever posted on this forum, imagine the flaming he'd get for posting photos of Everest, K2 or Annapurna without a single wrist shot!

Speaking of which... Steve, do you have any interesting stories about the guys you've met who happen to be in the old Rolex adverts? And, maybe YOU should be in one!

Thanks.

I know Ran Fiennes. I would not say I was his friend but I have met him on several occasions. And he has been a Patron for three of my expeditions.
I also met Wally Herbet once at the a Royal Geographical Society, we chatted for a while about his trips. And I have met Roger Mear who led the Footsteps of Scott expedition. Also the advert for a winter trip featured Chris Furse, I interviewed him for my dissertation for my degree; which was on polar exploration.

A fellow right wrist watch wearer. Don't you hate how they always seem to put the crown on the wrong side of the watch?
