Got this a few months ago. Now that is raining in California, it’s been awesome to drive in poor weather.

INCOMING...

As my G now enters 275 days at service, my frustration has led to an early Christmas present.

Anyone want to venture to guess?
600+hp
4 seats
Ever elusive and stunning OEM dark green

Damn, I see I am not as clever at all. What gave it away? You nailed it last time too.

I have been in love with Verde Hydra since I saw it on a 6.0 diablo many years ago. It is unfortunately a very difficult color to source as it is an $18k option that no one ever selects.

When the first Urus launched, it reminded me of a modernized Pontiac Aztek and the pitchfork grills to this day, without question, are the worst design language I have ever seen. When the Urus S launched, I was ecstatic that many of the original design flaws were fixed and the front bumper finally did not look like it was out of a transformers movie. I've been incredibly fortunate and blessed to be in such a position to add a new car, I wanted the ultimate SUV. Originally my plan was to custom order the new Urus SE as I have always want to custom spec a Lamborghini. Unfortunately they brought back many of the horrid design flaws and ruined the rear. Actually test drove one a few weeks back and Lamborghini has much work to do to iron out their new hybrid powertrain, was not impressed with the functionality.

This basically left me only a two year window for the production of a Urus S to source what I wanted. My original plan was for a 2025 G63, I cancelled that order after my saga with my current G has no conclusion in sight. Really disappointed with how Mercedes has handled the situation, an ECU harness should not be backordered for 6 months+.

Test drove all the other cars in the class including the Cullinan, DBX and Bentayga and landed on the Urus S. There is something about being cradled in the finest most comfortable italian leather and blasting to 60 in 3 seconds while getting a massage. The sheer force of the power and delivery is unlike anything I have experienced of a vehicle this size and weight - it defies physics.

Fast forward, scrolling through autotrader, I found EXACTLY how I would have spec'd my Urus S (minus night vision) which never happens. Verde Hydra over Terra Asia is an incredibly elusive and hard to find spec. The verde hydra in the sun is one of the best green shades I have ever seen in my life, the metallic and depth is spectacular. Paired against the dark tan hide of Terra Asia it blends well together. Saw it online while I was diving in Australia, called Manhattan Motorcars (they are fantastic) and bought it impulsively next day, sight unseen.

Having had it a few days, should anyone be shopping for one in the future, here are my honest thoughts, mostly in reference to my G which I loved:
Cons:
Backup camera legibility is GARBAGE. Can barely see in reverse during the day and at night the visibility is near zero, unacceptable for a 30k car yet alone 300k.
GARBAGE sound system, this car has the upgraded $8k B&O which is their top tier. I played with the various settings and it is substandard at best. The rising tweeters are a nice party trick but mid 2000 AMs had them.
The paddles are attached to the steering wheel, to get into first you have to touch the paddle from reverse, if you are turning in reverse you have no idea where the paddles are to move forward. Incredibly annoying and poor design.
Not a fan of the seat height, it is somewhere between a normal car and a SUV. I enjoyed the height of my G, this is an awkward inbetween.
The door panel near the window does not extend into the cabin far enough which you can not put you arm to be comfortable while holding the steering wheel. Which is odd as I have long lanky arms. Again wouldn't expect this in a sports car but I would in a daily SUV.
With the odd seat height it is difficult to find a seating position that is comfortable.
The rear 1/4 panel still has its short comings, definitely the weakest part of the car aesthetically. Subjectively, IMO, the G looks much better, I prefer the boxy design.
The haptic touch screen is slow to respond, it takes 30-60 seconds to load the urus profile when you start the car and you can use the screen. Way too long for a modern day car, unacceptable IMO.
Lifting the start button cover is a novelty at first, annoying after that wears off. Also cycling through the modes you can only go in one direction.
Also petty, but I underestimated how absurd insurance costs are. I have a perfect driving record, with no claims at 36 I was paying ~$3k for my G. My insurance company quoted almost $20k (not a typo) for the year. The joys of living in SoCal. I was able to find a provider for about 1/3 of that through my dealer but otherwise that would have been 40k of pretax dollars, mind boggling and something I did not factor in when purchasing the car.
As an analog sports car enthusiast, it feels weird typing this but the cup holders are the smallest I have ever seen, can barely fit a soda can. Again not an issue in a sports car but I would expect more in a SUV. Same thing with the ambient lighting, this is a $3k option that must be 2 or 3 LEDs that make zero impact at night.

PROS:
Power. It is unbelievable how fast and nimble this car is. It shouldn't be this fast, going through the back roads, by the time you look down you are already at triple digits.
Excellent steering that noticeably changes in each mode.
Exhaust sounds great and in strada, car drives like a regular suv.
Shouldn't matter but there is a bit more of exclusivity in BH, typically see 30+ G's a day, which I now see why there are more prevalent than the Urus as a preowned Urus is less than a new G63 w ADM. I realized I prefer being more incognito in a daily.
Verde Hydra is as good as it gets. Leather and craftmanship is top notch, the audi influence doesn't bother me.

Long story short, I am a bit underwhelmed and disappointed with the Urus at this price point. It doesn't do anything exceptionally well, short of the powertrain and does not fill the void I want for a daily SUV. I could justify this if you only had one car that you needed a SUV with a sports car feel but not if you access to multiple cars to fill various voids. Don't see this one lasting, should have trusted my gut instinct and not let my MB service issue deter me away from the 25 G63. Going to give it until February to spend more time with it but I anticipate this to be short lived.

Either I’m a savant of some sort or you and I think alike. Lol.

I’m gonna say this doesn’t make it to February unless you’re determined to prove me wrong, sounds like it ticks none of your boxes.

I know an owner of a construction company that drives his Urus (I think it’s a performante) on jobsites (the same places you would drive a work truck) I’m not talking paved roads either. Like drives the damn thing in clay and dirt that’s not graded in any acceptable fashion. Was giving him hell when I saw him on a jobsite and he threw me the key and told me to take it for a spin. I did not take it for a spin. lol

I'm sorry that your Christmas present is far from perfect.

It was interesting to hear your detailed opinion, thank you. According to them, this is a car that could be loved because of its Italian roots, but not precisely because the German technical part is rubbish. It seems that "vorsprung durch Audi" became obsolote. In the past, the internal electronics of these cars were at least ok, the old VW/Audi/Bentley/other MIB2 MMI electronics was one of the best on-board systems in their own age in my opinion. Now it seems, this was also messed up.

Every time I see one of those I am still shocked they are made by Lambo, are so dang ugly, and cost $300k.

The interior color is nice though. Lol.

Beautiful spec for sure ! I didn’t have mine long enough for a thorough review like yours, but I agree 100% with one thing….if it’s a one and only SUV in your garage for prestige, looks, performance….it’s
If not, and you have others to fill similar voids…I’d look at something different.
Maybe it’ll grow on you….but im certainly the last one to give advice on patience with cars or watches

Cool-ish ride. One thing is certain, there is no substitute for power. However, based on this write up I think I’ll take the under bet.

I did not take it for a spin. lol

Brian, that's a very unique color. Do not see many of them with this. Love the write-up of the pros and cons. I have a number of friends/colleagues who are in the same position. Exotic sports cars in the garage and one of these. They all moved on from this Urus in a short time. Funny enough, I think they all went to the G63, one of them is the Brabus version. Congrats on it and have fun for the time being. Call your MB dealer as it sounds inevitable that this Lambo will move on.

Great write up Brian! Thanks for taking the time to do that.

The car sounds absolutely horrible at that price point. Other than the color, I feel it looks underwhelming as well.

Thank you!

What a shame it disappointed you - at this price point it should have been the perfect car!

Hopefully it will grow on you by Feb.

Thank you for such an honest review, especially during the "honeymoon phase" of ownership! I'm not sure I can see a Urus or Purosangue as an everyday SUV. But I give you credit for shooting for the Ultimate Garage!

I hope your experience improves and the exceptional pros start outweighing the cons.

I decided awhile back that I prefer my SUVs to be SUVs. The all in one package doesn’t do it for me. In your shoes the G wagon is a pretty straightforward choice.

If you want to be different the 2025 LX700H overtrail is pretty dope and will be far more exclusive in LA than a G wagon.

I’m in the same boat - prefer each tool having its place. A friend has the Sterrato - and while an epic car, simple me would prefer a dedicated rally off roader with clearance. He uses it as intended, which is awesome.

I just cannot see the Urus as being a useful upgrade over alternatives except (perhaps) if I had access to an Autobahn.

Really appreciate that candid review.

I had a business partner that owns this, its a 68 Ferrari GT-something. I think are something like 12 examples of this car remaining or something crazy like that. One Saturday is was in the office and the guy that owns it calls me and says come out to the parking lot. He drives this thing around, usually Saturday mornings. This is, or was, a show grade car that at it's peak broke 1Mil. My friend/BP shrugged it off and said point blank "I have probably knocked 2 or 3 Hundred off the value by driving it around." Anyway he throws me the keys and offers to let me take it for a spin. I take a fairly straight forward loop out and back to the office. Driving a car as such was a touch unnerving. 1. I knew the value, 2. Its old and quirky. Manually activated fuel pump that filled the cabin with gas fumes at red lights - not a compatible feature set if you are into Marlboros (I'm not). The seats are half backs with no seat belts, the steering wheel is pencil thin, and the spoke rims are a unique feel.

Anyway, as we approach the office in return this guy is telling me how there is only one known mechanic in the US that can work on the transmission. As we are about to park it he tells me to stop, then tells me to stomp it. I don't really stomp, just a quick burst. He then tells me to stop being such a pu$$y and nail it. I oblige, the tracks are the result, he squealed a little as we approached the other side of the parking lot. Of course I had to ask him who was the pu$$y now?

About a month after this I run into him again and he tells me the that the transmission is having issues at the car has been sent in for work. That was a bout two years ago and I think the car is still in a almost fixed state. True story.

Apologies if I posted before, I may have but can't remember.

Really love this car. Kind of a weird flex by VW...for all the missteps they've made in recent years it's like they still wanted to show that they could build a damn nice, proper European saloon that's buttoned down, taut, and with no cost cutting amidst also building a bunch of cheap bloated Americanized trash that isn't really European in any way other than the brand.

And because VW doesn't understand the American market and because the American market holds its nose at a $50k VW, let alone a sedan in an SUV crazed market, these sold like 15k total units from the total production from 2019-2023. Mine is a 2021 (first year of the facelift). Then again, it's safe to say VW knew this wasn't going to be a volume seller and knew it was going to be a niche/low volume car. As an owner, I appreciate that VW brought over one last proper European car for us. This thing turns heads everywhere because nobody has ever seen one or heard of it. Sizewise it's between an A5 sportback and an A7. A lot of car for $50k sticker, transacted at around $43k the very morning I caught it coming off the truck (no lot rot - these usually sit for months).

I think we both mutually agree on you being a savant I would be very surprised if it makes it to February as well, already talking with dealers to trade in for a sintered bronze magno or platinum magno G63.

Just ONCE in my life, I would like to learn a lesson not the hard nor expensive way. Just once.

That is very kind of you, thank you. Couldn't agree more, I expected the audi influence to have had significantly improved the functionality and usuability of the car but there are many flaws that are not well thought out. This being the S and the second iteration, those should have been ironed out.

Onward and upward.

Thank you Richard. You are the only person I know who goes through cars and watches as fast as I do. At least you are engaged now, going through women is a much more costly endeavor.

Thank you and you are absolute right, I am currently suing my MB dealer for my G being in service for almost 9 months so I am going to work with a new dealer. Need to decide if it is worth the extra $100k for the 25 g63 with the new tech or put that money to a v12 coupe from another brand I have been chasing.

A for effort right? The unfortunate part is I did spend a tremendous about of time and research deciding on a Urus S, which is a bit disheartening, to be so underwhelmed so quickly. Appreciate the kind words as always, will have something new in the coming weeks.

You are very welcome, my intention was to only write a sentence or two but my frustrations got the best of me. 110% agree on the Sterrato, that to me still makes no sense. Just like the off road mode in a Cullinan or buying a 660hp lamborghini SUV

That is exactly it, a purpose for a purpose, the multi-faceted SUVs just aren't in. It was surprising the Cullinan did not check that box for me.

For the LX700, I just can't get over the enormous hour glass front grille, if I were to buy a Lexus it would be the new GX, love that SUV and they finally did away with the trackpad, that used to drive me mad in my father's car.

I hear you there. The g wagon is the closest thing to a Rolex on wheels. They are incredible vehicles regardless of the hype. Unlike most of the 300k+ options you won’t eat six figure depreciation on one either. Win win.
