I’ve realized most dudes that call another that word only say it because they’re trying to manifest in the universe what they’re not getting.

I have been in love with Verde Hydra since I saw it on a 6.0 diablo many years ago. It is unfortunately a very difficult color to source as it is an $18k option that no one ever selects.

When the first Urus launched, it reminded me of a modernized Pontiac Aztek and the pitchfork grills to this day, without question, are the worst design language I have ever seen. When the Urus S launched, I was ecstatic that many of the original design flaws were fixed and the front bumper finally did not look like it was out of a transformers movie. I've been incredibly fortunate and blessed to be in such a position to add a new car, I wanted the ultimate SUV. Originally my plan was to custom order the new Urus SE as I have always want to custom spec a Lamborghini. Unfortunately they brought back many of the horrid design flaws and ruined the rear. Actually test drove one a few weeks back and Lamborghini has much work to do to iron out their new hybrid powertrain, was not impressed with the functionality.

This basically left me only a two year window for the production of a Urus S to source what I wanted. My original plan was for a 2025 G63, I cancelled that order after my saga with my current G has no conclusion in sight. Really disappointed with how Mercedes has handled the situation, an ECU harness should not be backordered for 6 months+.

Test drove all the other cars in the class including the Cullinan, DBX and Bentayga and landed on the Urus S. There is something about being cradled in the finest most comfortable italian leather and blasting to 60 in 3 seconds while getting a massage. The sheer force of the power and delivery is unlike anything I have experienced of a vehicle this size and weight - it defies physics.

Fast forward, scrolling through autotrader, I found EXACTLY how I would have spec'd my Urus S (minus night vision) which never happens. Verde Hydra over Terra Asia is an incredibly elusive and hard to find spec. The verde hydra in the sun is one of the best green shades I have ever seen in my life, the metallic and depth is spectacular. Paired against the dark tan hide of Terra Asia it blends well together. Saw it online while I was diving in Australia, called Manhattan Motorcars (they are fantastic) and bought it impulsively next day, sight unseen.

Having had it a few days, should anyone be shopping for one in the future, here are my honest thoughts, mostly in reference to my G which I loved:
Cons:
Backup camera legibility is GARBAGE. Can barely see in reverse during the day and at night the visibility is near zero, unacceptable for a 30k car yet alone 300k.
GARBAGE sound system, this car has the upgraded $8k B&O which is their top tier. I played with the various settings and it is substandard at best. The rising tweeters are a nice party trick but mid 2000 AMs had them.
The paddles are attached to the steering wheel, to get into first you have to touch the paddle from reverse, if you are turning in reverse you have no idea where the paddles are to move forward. Incredibly annoying and poor design.
Not a fan of the seat height, it is somewhere between a normal car and a SUV. I enjoyed the height of my G, this is an awkward inbetween.
The door panel near the window does not extend into the cabin far enough which you can not put you arm to be comfortable while holding the steering wheel. Which is odd as I have long lanky arms. Again wouldn't expect this in a sports car but I would in a daily SUV.
With the odd seat height it is difficult to find a seating position that is comfortable.
The rear 1/4 panel still has its short comings, definitely the weakest part of the car aesthetically. Subjectively, IMO, the G looks much better, I prefer the boxy design.
The haptic touch screen is slow to respond, it takes 30-60 seconds to load the urus profile when you start the car and you can use the screen. Way too long for a modern day car, unacceptable IMO.
Lifting the start button cover is a novelty at first, annoying after that wears off. Also cycling through the modes you can only go in one direction.
Also petty, but I underestimated how absurd insurance costs are. I have a perfect driving record, with no claims at 36 I was paying ~$3k for my G. My insurance company quoted almost $20k (not a typo) for the year. The joys of living in SoCal. I was able to find a provider for about 1/3 of that through my dealer but otherwise that would have been 40k of pretax dollars, mind boggling and something I did not factor in when purchasing the car.
As an analog sports car enthusiast, it feels weird typing this but the cup holders are the smallest I have ever seen, can barely fit a soda can. Again not an issue in a sports car but I would expect more in a SUV. Same thing with the ambient lighting, this is a $3k option that must be 2 or 3 LEDs that make zero impact at night.

PROS:
Power. It is unbelievable how fast and nimble this car is. It shouldn't be this fast, going through the back roads, by the time you look down you are already at triple digits.
Excellent steering that noticeably changes in each mode.
Exhaust sounds great and in strada, car drives like a regular suv.
Shouldn't matter but there is a bit more of exclusivity in BH, typically see 30+ G's a day, which I now see why there are more prevalent than the Urus as a preowned Urus is less than a new G63 w ADM. I realized I prefer being more incognito in a daily.
Verde Hydra is as good as it gets. Leather and craftmanship is top notch, the audi influence doesn't bother me.

Long story short, I am a bit underwhelmed and disappointed with the Urus at this price point. It doesn't do anything exceptionally well, short of the powertrain and does not fill the void I want for a daily SUV. I could justify this if you only had one car that you needed a SUV with a sports car feel but not if you access to multiple cars to fill various voids. Don't see this one lasting, should have trusted my gut instinct and not let my MB service issue deter me away from the 25 G63. Going to give it until February to spend more time with it but I anticipate this to be short lived.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Living in Miami I see these on nearly every corner which has tempered my want for one.

What is wrong with your G63? My wife’s AMG truck has IMO the worst transmission ever mated to a vehicle and I’m ready to dump it for something else. She doesn’t seem to find an issue with it but after coming out of the PDK and Ferrari DCTs in my cars it’s so frustrating to drive the dumb transmission in her car (which thankfully for me is seldom) but I just know something is inherently wrong with it. In auto it seems to buck in 1st and 2nd like a teen learning to drive manual. It’s been hell trying to get the service tech’s to agree with me…

I’ve tossed around the idea of a Cayenne Turbo GT but with a kid on the way I may need to go in the direction of something more plush. Once the kid is old enough to get in the backseat herself I will get the V12 Lusso…

Brian, so sorry to hear that the Lambo is not working out. I have to wonder, how many of the shortcomings do you think are due to it being an Italian make with low volume, with limited resources in development despite the assistance of the VW group?

I feel the same way about my Turbo GT. It's fine and that's about all I can say. Fast as shit and handles really well, but can't hide the weight.

Long story short, was dating a stripper (I know, I know) and she left the sunroof open on a Friday evening after borrowing the car. That weekend we had more rain than the entire year prior which flooded the inside of the car, the entire cupholders were full of water, was like a lake flooded out when I opened the door. Anyways, MB deemed the car needed an entire ECU harness, that was on April 1st, I just heard back last week that it finally arrived after 7 delays, should have the car back in two weeks. Searching for a 2025 magno bronze g63, should hear back on one from Walnut Creek today, I will have this sorted before I leave to Tokyo in mid Jan.

Which AMG truck does she have? If it shares the same transmission as the G, there is something definitely wrong, mine was never an issue and took quite a bit of abuse, including off roading.

I hear you on the lack of exclusivity between LA and Miami, there is nothing you can daily drive that will be rare. I loved the Cayenne Turbo GT Coupe too, but paying the CA state tax I want a sunroof to enjoy and the Cayenne Coupe is moonroof only unfortunately. The challenge with that Turbo GT and the Urus is they have an identity crisis, and short of blasting through the onramp of a freeway, you will never need that much power.

The GTC4Lusso is a beauty though, I believe Richard just picked one up, that car in a dark color is magnificent. A neighbor has one in black and I drool everytime I hear it drive by, great value for a v12 ferrari IMO.

Thank you! I would think it would be the opposite as the VW group designed the same platform it shares with audi, cayenne etc. The short comings I can see and expect in their sport cars where you will need to compromise. That should not be the case in their SUV and you can see the audi influence throughout. The Urus is actually their best seller, if I recall, it accounts for something crazy, like 80% of their sales so the r&d should not be at a sacrifice, especially for the SECOND gen of the car. Too many compromises at this price point for a daily car in modern times to be acceptable IMO.

This will be an expensive lesson.

I think the Cayenne Coupe GTS is the sweet spot in that lineup, dollar for dollar or preowned turbo. Strangely, you don't really feel the weight in the Urus, I believe due to a lower center of gravity. Obviously not the case in the G, which is built like an ice cream truck but that is not the allure - once I drove the Urus for a few days, I immediately missed the G.

That’s funny, my wife’s 63 AMG also had transmission issues. She couldn’t get it out of park a few times and it developed a rough shift. The dealer reflashed it and said it was software related but it came back shortly after. I sold it for that reason.

Edit: I believe (from my shot memory) the transmission was the “7gtronic”

Dark Horse to the shop today. In and out in right at an hour. What's better than V8? A louder, more aggressive V8. Pic 1 is the factory resonator. No idea why they thought that thing belongs on a sports car. Pic 2 is the resonator delete X-Pipe! So good. Maybe the best $450 I've ever spent

For real. That is one of the reasons I dumped the M2. Too be clear, that X-Pipe is literally only 20 inches or so. It just replaces the retardo-resonator box, not full length exhaust. I have thought about that to no real conclusion. I am on the fence with either the Corsa or Borla, but I am going to give this current arrangement ample time. 24hrs in and my gut says there is no need for anything further in this regard. Also for clarification. Its "louder" not crazy, blow the neighbors windows out loud, and "more aggressive," not redneck, threaten violence aggressive - its just right (to me). I'll see what I can do about sound sound clips.

@ 7sins - Biggest problem I see for you in this thread is dating strippers - the cars on the other hand pale in comparision!

PS I never was a fan of the Urus but had hoped it worked out for you since I know you do a lot of leg work on your purchases and just because I dont like it doesnt mean you wouldn't love it, so be it. You gave it a shot.

On another note, I am a bit of a fanboy and its somewhat of a step down in price/heritage/fit & finish but I have consistently touted that the X5M is a HARD package to beat OVERALL. It kinda defies physics and is moderatly priced for what it does. When I sit down and think about the "SUV" landscape I can't think of another vehicle that does everything the X5M does as well. There are better "SUV's" for offroading for sure, better SUV's for a smoother drive for sure, but none that have a complete package IMHO.

I'll see what I can do about sound sound clips.
I did something similar to my 911… it was overly muted OEM. Sharkwerks x pipes to bypass and then further opened up the mufflers. A bit pricier (I think maybe $2k total about 10 years ago) but a bargain compared to full exhaust swap and honestly sounds just as good, without being obnoxious.

Congrats on the Urus. I love the spec. Love the brown leather interior.

I picked up an S a few months ago in south Florida. I too looked at just about everything over time.

I found mine in black on black with yellow accents and I fell in love. I think the look is second to none.

My only complaints are that my spec didn’t have the 360 surround camera. I don’t know how someone built a car like this without including that detail. I also got alcantara, not leather. At first, I was disappointed with it. But I’ve grown to really like it. Especially being in Florida.

No issues with the back up camera or the paddles for me. Or really anything else.

I think the Turbo GT is likely a better all around car, for less money. But it certainly doesn’t have the same sex appeal. They were 3 months late on mine when I told them I’m going to pass on it. But still likely the best SUV on the market imho. The DBX, no thanks. Gorgeous, but not for me. The Bentley is pretty spectacular but doesn’t have the same performance.

I recently picked up an X6M to replace my RS7 in jersey. Only because I wanted to be a bit higher up. It’s amazing at how well this car drives in comparison. And the tech is pretty awesome. Dare I say, it might be a better overall vehicle than all of them.

Anyway, love the Urus. Love your color combo. Congrats on a great pick up. Errr, ride.

Haha it was fun while it lasted, dare I say almost worth all the proceeding drama that ensued. I did take a serious hard look at the X6M but I just can't get over the idrive tech, that would drive me insane.

Seth it is so great to hear from you and see you posting. Congrats on the X6M, arguably IMO the sexiest SUV BMW makes and the alpina of course. Post pics!!

Appreciate the kind words on the Urus, it is definitely polarizing, people love or hate it. Still can't get over the seating position, it feels so awkward being inbetween car and suv height. I know I could grow to like it but at this price point I should be in love, I fear this one is short lived. Already purchased a magno sintered bronze g63 that I am waiting on transport to pickup and should be here in a few days. That is exactly what I want in an SUV, I should have known better to deviate and my other vehicles can fill the other various voids.

flame suit on ... iDrive is a really great system to be honest, I mean I have experienced almost every iteration and they have really evolved to a place that I never thought I would dare say positive things about.

In addition like my wife if you use carplay you basically never interact with iDrive FWIW

Good Luck with the new Geländewagen

Thanks B. Really appreciate that. A lot.

Been thinking a lot about your post. I tend to agree. It really is overpriced. And if you don’t love it, definitely not worth holding onto it.

As I’m driving the X6M, I’m having a hard time justifying the Urus. Half the price, and it offers so much.

That said, I do still love it. No plans to get rid of it. Still having a hard time justifying the price even so.

And the G wagon is worth every penny imo.

Will post pics of the BMW soon. The more I drive it, the more I like it. Their cabins are great. And im loving the tech. The driving experience is really great. It’s super fast and very responsive. I’m really surprised at how good it is actually.

Picked this up for giggles. Wanted a manual rwd and since I am too cheap to pay asking prices for a sport classic, this is going to have to tide me over. Picked up winter tires so currently driving this is Colorado!

That Blue Chip shop certainly has some special cars! They had a 997 GT3 RS 4.0 last time I was in there. Your GTS is Shark blue?

Porsche Colo Springs had a blue and gray Sport Classic a few months back. I must have stared at those things for a full 5 minutes without moving!
