Of course! I dislike coffee as well. (OK, now you are thinking ) I drink about 2 ounces of coffee, 14 ounces of milk, and a good dose of sugar.

I do enjoy coffee in the morning and end up at Starbucks for a latte. You would all laugh, there is a group of us, men who meet each morning and hang out and do a lot of BS-ing and teasing of each other!!! Lots of fun but it does remind me of really old men meeting at MickyD or Burger King and piddling away the morning!!!

Afraid I can only be a bad influence, Caroline. But I will now make the beds, dress Violet and myself, and look for something to put in the porch planter that can take a frost or two.... some pansies, maybe?

Pansies would be a great choice and the flowers called Johnnie-jump-ups would work as well if available in your area. They are basically very small flowered pansies but very nice!!! Primrose would be another good choice!!!

OK, here's a question. I want to put some flowers in a hanging basket as well as a large clay pot in our backyard. The area gets sun from probably 10 - 4 during the summer. It also is quite hot, as we are in the south.

The flowers I plant in the spring seem to poop out after a couple of months, or they just don't do well. I've tried Vinca, impatiens (too much sun), "wave" petunias, and some other sun loving annual.

I want something that is full and colorful. It's possible that I don't treat them properly, but I always water them, start off with good soil, etc.

Any advice?

The only plant I did not kill in a hanging basket was the Wandering Jew. It seemed to do very well - as long as I remembered to water it enough. It's got pretty foliage, too.

Begonias. The friend of brown thumbs everywhere.

Carolina, do you fertilize with an all purpose fertilizer like Miracle Gro every 2 weeks during the growing season??? The south does get very hot I will have to do some research to see what can work but fertilizing with a water soluble fertilizer does do wonders. Remember though if you buy the plants from a garden center wait one month before fertilizing because you do not know when they last fertilized(they usually use a slow release fert. that looks like small beads/pellets). Remember you do need to water everyday and maybe twice in the southern in the summer. As for potted plants you could go with New Guinea Hybrid Impatiens, Marigolds or dwarf Snap dragons as a possibility. The reason for dwarf Snaps is because the full size get tall and fall over(shattering) if not staked. Another good choice would be Geraniums, there are many new varieties with stunning flowers. A good book on Annuals is a book by Wayne Winterrowd called 'Annuals for Connoisseurs. Another good book is 'Annual Gardening' by the Missouri Botanical Garden(June Hutson)
Sorry it took so long to post but I'm a slow typist!!!

Lisa, be careful with Begonias in hanging baskets for they need more shade then sun. And there are varieties of Begonias that do trail and are perfect for hanging baskets!!!

I just got back from Lowe's with a 12 pack of purple-veined petunias (had good luck with petunias last year and am trying a different color) for the patio pot. For my hanging basket, mixed miniature pansies. Maybe these are Johnnie Jump-Ups? The flowers are no more than an inch across and the foliage is smaller than the usual pansy. I got a coconut-husk-lined wire basket to put them in. Now that Violet is napping (not the flower, the toddler!) I shall go and plant them....

We have been in a drought cycle in the South so five years ago I planted a lot of Lantana. We live in zone eight so they are perienniels and I have them all around the yard. Since you live in zone seven, I would assume they would be annuals and thus, I would only plant them in planters and hanging baskets. They do well in full sunlight and are drought resistant. I never water them and they bloom all summer long. Now they are kind of wild growing, so they have an umkempt look. For us, they have survived some cold temps and two years ago in late March the lows were in the teens and the highs were around freezing for a week. No damage. Just a thought for some nice colour in a hanging basket. I perfer the reds or the type that start out white, then the flowers turn purple. Hope Lion will chime in with some good suggestions, which I much appreciate.

Yes, we are zone 7b. You just named the annual I forgot - Lantana. I planted a few plants in our large clay pot, and while they did OK for a month or two, that was it. I watered them a lot. They were purple and white, but looked kind of scraggly.

I think I have a brown thumb.

Maybe I watered them too much?

The only annual I have great luck with is Impatiens.
