Nooooo, I wouldn't have guessed that. ![]() Their typical 2030 comes in E only but they do make some 2030 boots in D or E and D but you have to keep your eyes out for them. I purchased my one only Viberg until yesterday from Leffot on the 2030 and it was in D. They typically recommend going down a full size but on their D width I went down 1/2 size. As you the majority of Edward Green I have are on the 82 and 202. I wear a thick sock but I like Darn Tough thicker socks in merino wool and I find the fit snug with a bit of room left in the toe which is Ok because overall the fit is snug just a tad long. Merino wool is just plain comfortable regardless the weather. Besides subscribing to the Viberg newsletter I also check Division Road from time to time and I'm subscribed to their newsletter. Good Luck Russ, and thanks for popping in. Still love the Dover MTO you did a few years back. Cheers, Dan ![]()

Fun bump, I too love good shoes.
I first met Silvano Lattanzi at Louis Boston, back when there WAS a Louis Boston. I was shopping and they had a trunk show. Bottom line I ended up with four pair of his bespoke shoes (not all at once). Sm Lattanzis.jpg I also acquired four pair of Perry Ercolino's. A shoemaker from Doylestown Penn. Sm Perrys.jpg Also, got a pair of MTM Limmers hiking boots, most supportive and comfortable boots ever. (hand made in New Hampshire). Ultralights.jpg

No, I haven't been in years. They changed the forum layout (I guess) and it was just never the same. I didn't enjoy it anymore.

Yeah, I just haven't really either. That is for exception when starting to look at a pair of Whites and Nicks which I just hadn't gotten around to getting until last year. More for research than anything else.

![]() Dan, thanks for confirming what I was thinking about removing the extra insoles in the IRs for more regular wear and break in. I think much like your well-loved Wolverines, perhaps frequent but not day-long wearing is the key. Thanks for sharing what you consider important factors in choosing shoes/boots. I know that when you write “fit is king”, it’s no facile truism but genuinely hard-won knowledge. Thank you for sharing. ![]() |

Considering everything you have said a 2030 in E might be your best bet as a starting point and you"ll find plenty of those. Even if it's not the leather you want at least you could use it for sizing purposes. Basically minus shipping you do the same thing in store anyway. *Note: I'm not sure whether return shipping is on you or not and I did have to pay about $45 to ship this last pair.

I was just checking out a few videos on YouTube and someone gave a fairly decent description on the Viberg 2030 Last. They advise you to size down but what most don’t understand is their boot is not only advertised as being an E width boot it is an E width boot. On the face of it it doesn’t seem that odd but if you have purchased a good number of boots not only in the United States where the average width is D and from the UK where their average width is an E and a narrow is a D you might get confused. Not many shoemakeers sell their default shoe or boot in a wide size.
Anyway their Last is a bit long which is normal when it comes to boots as well. Thing is for the average person you can down size but you’re still going to get a wider boot than desired with the 2030 Last if you purchase one in E which is what they typically sell. The best thing to do is to try and purchase one in D but as many find because the toe is a bit narrow also you might find sizing down only by 1/2 instead of one full size would be best. All things considered my Viberg 2030 is overall snug and more so with thicker socks but there is a tad extra length in the toe box. Much better than wearing an E where it would have to much volume. Just the nature of the beast.

Also keep in mind most of the retailers that sell these shoes or boots can be extremely helpful as well. Especially if you can tell them your experience with other shoes and boots and specific Lasts. This is also why I like Styleforum because users there will do the same. The challenge however is that the threads are so large and you may have to mine them a bit to find what you’re looking for. But it’s there. Also I wanted to mention Viberg more than likely has a list of retailers on their website. I didn’t necessarily need it for various reason but it might be helpful for you. Note: The better description where the narrowness of the last on the 2030 occurs is right at the ball or widest portion of my foot. The very characteristics as to why I find the 2030 aesthetically appealing with a more narrow toe is the very reason I have to wear something about 1/2 size larger than normal with their D width anyway. That’s not unique by any means as this is what I have to do with the C&J 321 Last as well. The very nature of the design and or Last of the 310 won’t be a great fit is because of the size of the toe and I imagine it won’t be just the toe. It’s an aesthetic but in no means would that Last be a great fit for almost anybody.

Funny/ironic that in the OP's selfie pic I quoted above, he's not wearing shoes.
I have several pairs of Wolverine 1000 mile, and it's interesting how even in the same size, presumably made with the same last, some fit better than others. My oldest pair, also the most worn, are of course the most comfortable. I finally bought a pair of... oh crap, I can't remember the name, not wearing them today. Made in USA, very few stores carry them, went to the SFO store when we were there last year and I spent way too much money, but they're great. You only get one pair of feet.

On the other hand my mom made it point to make sure I had a good pair of shoes every year to wear to school. Now anymore I'm not even sure if most people even know what a Brannock Device is. The issue you speak of with regards to your 1000 mile boots is not totally unusual and when it comes to that boot I don't think it is the first I've heard that.

Like Nancy Sinatra in that ‘95 Playboy issue? Sorry, dumb gag. Those are awesome boots and there is something interesting and cool about having a narrow, refined collection of anything.
I popped into the RM Williams shop this week and had a good long look at some Gardeners, the new ones with the commando sole. Great company and I feel I need to get a pair sometime. A small worry that one day the Australia-made ones won’t be around anymore. Is there a specific word for that kind of worry, applied to heritage items’ future scarcity? Bonkers, maybe. |

Truman Boots (Not Recomended).
I just wanted to post that this is a brand I would no longer recommend at this point in time. First I would like to say I personally don't own any myself but not long ago it's always been my understanding based on everything I had come across that Truman Boots were a good option, and actually I was considering getting a pair now that I have a pair of Whites and Nicks which should be here this week. I do have others to include Viberg Truman is more in the White and Nick space at least when it comes to aesthetics. Not price but aesthetics. Anyway one of the threads I receive notices from Styleforum depicted a quality issue on Trumans so I decided to take a deeper dive into the actual Truman thread on Styleforum. I really didn't have to look to hard to come across a number of issues which would be enough to keep me anyway from buying boots from this brand. If you care to look yourself you can start on this page but you may even be able to find thing previous as well. The number of things that were concerning to me besides shotty workmanship was cheaper materials to include dye washing off a few of the boots people own when they got wet. Also the fact some users are reporting that Truman uses foam instead of cork. Anyway this was not always true for this brand but it appears they have made some decisions to use inferior material of late and because of this it would not be a brand at this point that I would recommend. Feel free to take a look starting here and make your own decision. https://www.styleforum.net/threads/t...47349/page-170 The one that caught my eye initially was the one posted on this thread. https://www.styleforum.net/threads/b...0433/page-1422 That instance by itself wouldn't prevent me but the things I found on the Truman thread were.

Nicks Boots Custom Americana
This is actually the third of my acquisitions for the year which are the first boots I've purchased in good long while. A Whites LTT LOGGER 375 - 55 - SPLIT COMMANDO - CINNAMON WAXED FLESH & NATURAL CXL, a Viberg Service Boot® 310 BCT - Marrone Washed Kangaroo, and now a Nicks Custom Americana. With all of the boots I have I'm almost ashamed it took me so long to get a pair of Nicks Boots, but actually that has a lot to do with why I didn't that and a Whites Boot. I already have more boots than I can possibly use. But last year I decided to correct that because frankly I just wanted one and had been for a good long time. Actually it took me almost a year prior to this to determine which ones to get not to mention what leather at least when it comes to the Whites and Nicks Boots, regardless I eventually made the choice I'm happy with. Basically I guess I'm just a fan of Chromexcel. All three boots end up being very good fits for me, so I'm extremely happy with that. You just really never know for sure how it's going to turn out with Lasts you've never tried on prior and all of these were ordered over the internet. I did have the opportunity to return if needed, but I'm much happier I didn't need to do that. Heck, on YouTube one reviewer calls the Nicks Americana the Iron Ranger Slayer, and I for one would agree with that. The Iron Ranger actually is another boot I never got around to getting so that certainly played a part in my decision when I eventually chose this particular boot as that was basically the style I landed on. Not unlike the Iron Ranger Nicks Boots are notorious for their break in. The leather they use is extremely thick, not to mention they use stacked leather for their footbed instead of cork which will tend to make your break in even more difficult. These aren't their work boots so I expect they may not be quite as stout, but don't be fooled these boots are still very stout boots. There's no rush so I plan on taking my time. By wearing them while sitting in my chair while watching TV that will help at least in breaking in the uppers before I start attempting to wear them and break in that footbed. These may not be for everybody, as these are not light boots by any means. But if you are into this type of boot and you looking for the best constructed boots out there Nicks has to be at the top of both of those lists.

Are these brown CXL? The pic is just fuzzy enough they could pass for (new) waxed flesh on my phone.
