It's Sprint Race Weekend with Friday (tomorrow) qualifying. For those stateside, check your local listings but I found it on an obscure channel (ESPNU) with Saturday and Sunday races on ESPN2.

Yeah looking forward to it.
I hope Austria brings us an epic race like Silverstone did. What a race! Cheers/B

I guess that Mercedes short wheelbase doesn't like off camber race tracks...

Very interesting qualification, I feel for the Mercedes mechanics who have two cars to rebuild.

Could it be the engine placement weight is more of an issue? I’m happy to learn from you all?

360cm is the max wheelbase for 2022, but testing may have indicated something less based on some constructor’s design choices. Here’s some tech info in a fairly accurate article. https://the-race.com/formula-1/why-2...ht-can-be-cut/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I don't think it's the wheelbase at all but rather Mercedes took some downforce of their cars. Both Mercs were punching above their weight in practice and qualifying yesterday and based on the report by Ted Kravitz after talking with MB, they "made the car faster" between Q2 and Q3 which could only mean one thing... trimming out the car.

Just to say Jordan through to FI were my customer right up until I left. We were the HVAC contractor of choice so had access to pretty much everywhere. (I sold my company in 2015 when I relocated to Tenerife. )
This was filmed just before the British GP a many years ago: the blue car was featured on Top gear too IIRC https://www.facebook.com/richard.bar...52977011380054 Luckily the Facilities manager was a friend so we always got a call out around then to be at the factory or even over the road looking at the truck AC. I still follow the team but despair how AM seem to be struggling. :-( |

I didn’t see a reference to the 2022 minimum wheelbase of 346cm? The wheelbase spec range of 140mm is quite small? Would weight distribution (ie. moving a 150kg motor forwards or backwards) have more of an affect on cornering than trying to find weight to lose on cars that are pretty well stripped? Phillps comment on some downforce being removed could be a reason as both the LH and GR offs looked as if downforce was lacking.

That appears in the article. Predominantly in the chart: Teams, of course, are permitted to go shorter than the max. But no minimum that I know. So if there is a car at 346cm, it would be their option - but they typically don’t declare that since it’s proprietary to their chassis. For the full specs here’s more info in the link - see 3.4.2 for wheelbase. https://www.fia.com/sites/default/fi...2022-02-18.pdf Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Well, if your engine is going to go, do it with style. The two bangs just before he stopped were 'proper' bits flying out of the engine with 'enthusiasm'.
Great race and congrats to ALL teams

it was fairly obvious that Sainz has never parked on a hill, either head up or head down. |

The FIA has NEVER regulated, as part of the 'Formula', wheelbase... Hence, Mercedes issues which has ALWAYS been a long wheelbase chassis.
last years chassis Mercedes would have been in violation of the 2022 wheelbase regulations... the redbull has always been a short wheelbase chassis and has been in compliance with the 2022 rules for years. I forecasted Mercedes were going to have pace issues early last year when the 2022 rule set was first released |

I thought it was another good race with a lot of overtaking up and down the grid. That's 2 straight wins for Ferrari and for the past few races they seem to have found genuine pace if not strategy and reliability.
I would have given LeClerc the driver of the day with the issues he had with the car while still keeping a healthy gap to Max but can't argue with the fans choice of Mick Schumacher. That's double points for HAAS 2 races in a row and it appears Mick has found his confidence. Hope that HAAS introduces some upgrades soon to see how high they can climb the points ladder. |

Goin to be an expensive fix for Ferrari, that engine bay blew out. Did anyone else have problems recording the sprint? Usually, my youtubetv records every session, but for some reason did not record the sprint. Maybe was off a streaming channel?

Public acknowledgement of Masi leaving FIA entirely. During this by-week, tune into FormulaE from NYC maybe? CBS Sports is the media parent methinks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Imho sounds plays a key role than most may realize on a conscious level. This is a general statement, not just limited to F1.
Example-ish: My old 1985 308GTS QV was slower than a modern Miata, yet the way she sounded on track and i rowed through the gears... priceless!

Well, I sincerely understand the thoughts, and respect your choices this weekend.
For the avoidance of doubt, I was in a dentist’s chair yesterday afternoon…some familiar drill sounds… But if anyone is at the race drop me a PM. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I recall when Audi was in WEC & ALMS and intro’d the diesel hybrid. They were fastest but… Such a different sound - I was nervous in the pits that one might sneak up on me. Had been so accustomed to the sound of V-10s & 8’s… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Agree with Steven that the sense of "sound" is missing from FE. The first F1 race I went to was in the V10 era and just hearing the engines fire up in the garages was magic. When the first car went out in practice went down to T1 and downshifted.... ahhhhh, I didn't know what I was hearing as there was a thunderous sound, but no clouds in the sky! I could not believe how loud the downshifts were in these F1 cars (this is before the seamless double clutch gearboxes we have now) and how the gearboxes did not just fall out of the cars with each downshift! This particular sound does not translate on TV and had to be heard in person.
Finally, the end of lap one had 22 cars, all V10s with at the time, 20,000 RPM limits.... Ferrari, BMW, Mercedes, Honda, Renault V10s all at full song going past you. We had earplugs, but it didn't matter... the rumble reverberated off the metal bleachers to the point we felt it in our chests.... it's something I'll never forget. |

Imagine being within the VIP section for SpaceX rocket launches... ...yet no sound! No thunderous takeoff No crackling of the air as she ascends skyward No sonic boom Or making love in dead silence (wait, did i use my outside voice for that last one?) ------ Perhaps the next spec F1 car will sound like a race car... or not. Have a feeling many here already know what emotionally happens when they auto race in 'near silence'. Pretty please don't blame the messenger here 77T, some things in life are meant to be... aurally enthusiastic.
