Was it his mistake?
I thought I heard him say, the accelerator was stuck?

I also heard that but thought that was after the crash while he was attempting to reverse out Steve.

As for Russell I think he read the rules correctly.

If he has his front wheel in front of your rear wheel then he has the right of way and you just have to get off the track.

The stewards seemed to agree.

Honestly more of a heat of the moment comment I should’ve deleted.

That was posting during the race referring to the moment he clearly didn’t have the track position and was running it up the chain incessantly that Perez should cede the position Russell never had. Even the Mercedes folks which will push things as they can seemed pretty lost by his determination on that incident.

I guess that coming off the Austrian GP, where Russell hit Perez and took him out of the race then this demand. Just didn’t sit well. I’m very pro Perez admittedly.

Given the throttle issues Charles has had in the past coupled with the radio broadcast, one would presume it was another throttle issue with the car that caused the spin, but both LeClerc and Binotto confirmed after the race it was driver error. The throttle radio message referred to the sequence when trying to reverse the car out of the barrier.

RUS may have had the right to the corner per the new rules but he didn't leave Perez room on track out. The stewards did the right thing with a no call as Perez kept the place and didn't assess RUS a penalty.

The Official Formula One Thread!

On the Topic of overtaking, this website has it pretty well explained.

https://www.racefans.net/2022/04/21/...ished-in-full/

It’s more about getting a “significant portion” of your car alongside the one in front of you. Then you have gained a right to racing room on the track. There are nuances, of course. Because those are guidelines, each incident is investigated on its own merit consistent with the concepts outlined in that article.

If getting a “significant portion” of your car alongside the one in front of you is the requirement then should Russell have been given a penalty?

He looked way too hot on the way in.

Russell should have been given a penalty, but alas the British commentators didn't raise it as an issue..... Instead they focused upon whether Perez should get a penalty for going off track (because he had no alternative when Russell forced him off track).

I increasingly wonder how much the Sky (British) commentary affects the stewards in making, or not making regulatory penalties.

I also think Russell should be penalized based on the rules.

Let's just ban overtaking altogether, shall we, then no-one will get upset about being 'done' in a corner.

Contingency of what the F1 engine rules look like for 2026 for Porsche to enter. Either way, huge news.

I do think that incident could have earned RUS a penalty (forcing another driver off track) but I also think the rule isn’t well defined on the shared responsibility when one is tracking out during overtaking.

On the influence of Sky commentary, it is nil. The audio on the live feed is zero in the stewards room to avoid any undue influence.

It’s a fair point. I think if we consider the “how he got there” compared to the intent of the rule, it seemed to be a dive bomb.

But in the end RUS managed to stay on track even though PER had to make an avoiding maneuver. So I’m guessing the RUS move was determined racing in a manner “enabling the car to clearly remain within the limits of the track”.

Sebastien Vettel's retiring from F1 at the end of 2022 season.

Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel is to retire from Formula 1 at the end of this season.

The 35-year-old said the decision had been "difficult" and that he had "spent a lot of time thinking about it".

The German said he would "take more time to reflect on what I will focus on next" at the end of the year. He said spending more time with his family was a priority.

Vettel will leave the sport as one of the most successful drivers in history.

Only Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Juan Manuel Fangio have won more world titles than Vettel, and only Hamilton and Schumacher have more than his 53 race wins.

He added: "Today is not about saying goodbye. Rather, it is about saying thank you - to everyone - not least to the fans, without whose passionate support F1 could not exist."

Vettel, who won four consecutive drivers' titles with Red Bull from 2010 to 2013, said he had "really enjoyed" his time with Aston Martin in 2021 and 2022, adding: "Although our results have not been as good as we had hoped, it is very clear to me that everything is being put together that a team needs to race at the very highest level for years to come.

"I hope that the work I did last year and am continuing to do this year will be helpful in the development of a team that will win in the future, and I will work as hard as I can between now and the end of the year with that goal in mind, giving as always my best in the last 10 races."

Aston Martin had wanted to keep Vettel next season, but he decided he wanted to step away from the sport.

In recent years he has become an outspoken campaigner on social and environmental issues.

Vettel has always eschewed social media, but he launched an Instagram account on Thursday just before his retirement announcement, with his biography there describing him as "public figure".

He could, step into Formula E, in line with his stance on, 'green' matters.

True, or 24 Hour races... and a circle-j_rk NASCAR race for the trifecta. Gosh knows FE(h) desperately needs... something. i think first they need to add AR so the rules and passing 'power plays' (or whatever they call it) are easier for viewers to understand / see. Heck, even i got confused listening to the commentators trying to explain it, and will readily admit i'm not the sharpest knife in the kitchen.

TBH his reaction time would need more headwork than father time allows.

So few events are run on permanent tracks (mostly temp street circuits) that karters could wipe up many F1 champs.

I do agree with the majority of you that Formula E is difficult to like for the purist F1 fan. That alone will be the glass ceiling for the likes of VET, HAM, ALO and FE.

If he wished, we could see him in DTM, WEC, Le Mans, IMSA (24hrsDaytona, 12hrsSebring), or maybe even IndyCar.

I think it's safe to say Mercedes is back now. Double podium last week, pole position this week with Russell, and great race pace with full fuel tanks. Should be a great race tomorrow with both Ferraris desperate to try and pass Russell on a track notorious for lack of passing and both Red Bulls way out of position trying to move forward. Wow!
