The Official Formula One Thread!

This should be a great race. Mixed nuts in grid.

RUS needs nerves of steel at the start.

Ferrari won’t dawdle, nor will NOR, maybe a 4-wide in Turn 1 on opening lap?

GREAT qualifying results... I am not necessarily happy for Mercedes, but I am very happy for GR.

Lol Ferrari. They turn a 2/3 start to both cars out of the podium. Lewis has really turned it on the past 4 or 5 races.

The Official Formula One Thread!

The racecraft on track and the pitwall was in the spirit of the sport.

Refreshing - yes, mistakes were made among some drivers and teams but overall a fitting GP.

The driving guidelines may be having a positive effect. Only one penalty during race, and one close call near the end.

The Stewards reviewed video evidence and determined that RIC was wholly to blame for the collision with STR who was overtaking RIC on the outside of turn 2. RIC was on new hard tires and locked the left front going into turn 2. He understeered and collided with STR causing a spin. RIC got +5 seconds and 2 points on his license.

Then later, on last lap of race, the Stewards reviewed video evidence and determined no further action against ZHO who left the track without gaining lasting advantage. ZHO was on better tires and was trying to overtake MSC. At turn 13, ZHO attempted an overtake on the outside with a significant portion of his car alongside. MSC was slightly ahead at the apex and opened his steering leaving no room for ZHO on the outside. ZHO left the track to avoid a collision. Having left the track, he then fell in behind MSC at the entry to turn 14. MSC took a line through turn 14 on the dirty side of the track which left ZHO room to overtake MSC on the inside and ZHO legitimately took that opportunity.

Anyone see anything outside of those moments? I saw a great bunch of racing and was glad no dirty driving happened to spoil the August break with hearings.

Agreed, just wish the rain came at two laps left and everyone stayed on track running what they brung. Overall a great race and LOTS of racecraft and strategy played out.

Also proves you can 'spin it and win it'.

If it had rained, and all stayed out, a red flag incident may have occurred with 2 laps remaining.

Then, ahem, the worm would turn with VET in front of HAM - both on new tires for a restart.

I’ve won in the rain - it’s rewarding. But all the other drivers (not the winners) would think it wasn’t true racing methinks. I remember that impound well.

True, my apologies for not clarifying. I mean that very light rain that is juuuuust enough to keep things on edge, yet race going and everyone stays on track (ok, a spin or two and of course the possible small slide when braking... and stay off painted bits maybe???).

But no, not hard or medium rain, just a touch to make it a bit more... equal engine-wise so talent and car control are rewarded.

PS: Love the rain too, once experience was there. First time driving in the rain scared the living.... And while this isn't F1 talk, the most fun I ever had driving the modern Bentley GT was in the snow. With Blizzaks and all that weight she danced remarkably well. Very controllable.

I'm sticking to my original premise that Mercedes is back with two consecutive double podiums and a pole position. Take away the call to put LEC on hards and the Mercs pace was just as good or faster than both Sainz and Leclerc on the softs. I gave up on Ferrari winning either title about 2 months ago. I'm calling it right now at the summer break, Mercedes will finish 2nd in the constuctor's title and Ferrari 3rd. When the world wide feed is concentrating on Binotto going to a bathroom break instead of the race, it's over - things must change at Ferrari for the sake of 2023.

On another note, Max is just a beast. From 10th to 1st with no safety car and a spin and his teammate that was just behind him at the start could only manage 5th. Max reminds me of a determined Senna/Schumacher. Doesn't matter the situation, he's going to be right there at the end every single time.

It's going to be a long summer break.

One has to admire the strategists at Red Bull.
Both in this season and the previous they make the right and often daring calls.
I like that attitude, all or nothing.

LEC must be feeling desperate with his crew

It's all about Hannah! Tbf RB team is solid all around, everyone pulls their weight. Good read on Hannah below.

Does anyone think there's a language barrier at Ferrari haha. I can barely understand what Binotto is saying half the time. Sainz could literally drive and strategize by himself better.

He probably realized that he's never going to win anything again with RBR, Mercedes, and Ferrari all taken up and Alpine being stuck in midfield mediocrity. I'm guessing AM came in and offered him a nice pay raise to ride out the remaining years of his career.

Binotto says there is nothing to change at Ferrari which begs the question, "How much power does he really have?"  Is there no one checking this guy?

Ferrari is backing him up.

But their reliability (engineering) and poor decision making (strategy) cost 108 points. LEC’s own mistakes cost another 32.

After the break, we may see some other changes under the boot.

Alright folks, the silly season is upon us!

Otmar says that he learned of Alonso leaving and joining Aston Martin from a press release!

It's just been announced that Oscar Piastri will be an Alpine F1 driver along Ocon for 2023

https://www.grandprix247.com/2022/08...stri-for-2023/

Does Alpine put Piastri in the seat right away or sometime before the end of the season to get him ready for 2023 and remove Alonso from bringing any trade secrets to AM?

What happens now with RIC at McLaren?

So Alpine is going to roll with Ocon as the lead driver and a rookie? Lol, good luck with that. I've never really been impressed with Ocon unless you're fine with just being a midfield team which looks like Alpine is.

Looks like Oscar is saying he's not driving for Alpine next year. The team did a press release before agreeing to a contract with him.

LOL, Alpine.

Honestly at this point, I wonder what leverage does Mr Binotto have over Ferrari. Domenicali , Matticiaci, and Arrivabene had to resign over seasons that were better than the last 3 and Harry Potter wannabe is still here and talking garbage.

Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton will be joining a group of investors who won the bidding for the NFL’s Denver Broncos franchise led by Walmart WMT, 0.35% heir Rob Walton, the group announced.

Hamilton will be a minority shareholder as part of the reported $4.6 billion sale, the most expensive team sale for any sports franchise in history, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal is expected to take 60 to 90 days to close.

LOL, Alpine.
Hahaha, yet another twist and turn in this silly season. Yes, just read that Oscar had a clause that made him a free agent if not signed by July 31. So the odds on favorite now are perhaps a OP to McLaren and RIC to Alpine? Wow.

Yet another news story that breaks out during the summer break - and it's only Day 2:

Lewis Hamilton will be a minority share owner of the NFL Denver Broncos football team in a deal estimated to be worth $4.65B
