For an evergreen shrub you can look into varieties of Boxwood(Buxus microphylla or Buxus sempervirens). They make a nice hedge but will grow slower in shade. Is the planting site full shade or partial? Also what variety of yew is he suggesting?
Japanese Yew is what he's suggesting, Leo. It will be in almost full shade.

We'll have some boxwood, too, in the more sunny areas. Maybe there's some kind of low-growing fir or pine or something similar - I'll definitely ask our landscaper about it.

Kind of thinking out loud here, while I doubt the toddler would actually eat the plants, she and her sisters love to take the leaves and berries and make "monster soup" with them using water and mud. I suppose any they would ingest would be sap or juices that might get onto their fingers. But also, being that the yews would be planted in the front yard where there's no fence, I would always have my eye on the baby anyhow to be sure she's not near the street. And we'd really only have to be extra vigilant this next year or so. After that, she would know better.

That I don't know, Leo. However, if all yews are poisonous, I've still got the same problem, I guess.

Yes, you do but I do not know of anyone being poisoned by these plants. If you would not mind a deciduous hedge you could go with Euonymus alatus (Burning bush-Winged Euonymus)) they make a good hedge and tolerant of shade. They do not like water logged soils and go with a cultivar such as Compactus. It's slow growing but can get as large as 10' by 10'. So some pruning will be necessary as they grow!!!

Icon4 Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Don't plant ivy. Our last house had ivy already planted, when we bought it. It actually got into the walls, ending up inside the house. Nearly impossible to kill. Cost many dollars to get rid of it, and repair the damage. Also, had problems with tree roots getting into water line. The yard is what attracted us to the house, but it ending up being our biggest nightmare. It was like 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'. Made us afraid to sleep at night.

Hi, guys. I want to stay and visit but I'm getting the evil eye from my husband. What!? Like I should be doing laundry, mopping the floors, serving him breakfast? Who does he think he is!

He can always do what I did. I had foot surgery on Friday and I've been in bed all weekend with my foot up and popping percosets to a fair thee well. Arleen has had to play nurse because I am stuck here. I've had to have my meals in bed, she has to bring the paper to me and I've got my computer table on the bed so when I'm propped up with all those comfy pillows behind me, I can surf away.

But don't kid yourself. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I am bored out of my skin and missed a wonderful HD performance of the Met opera yesterday (or so my wife tells me -she went anyway).

I should sit, buck nekkid, atop one of his military tube radios, holding his guitar and licking the neck of it, and for good measure I could be chanting, Kansas City Southern Railroad.... Burlington Northern.... Rock Island.... and then he'd say: Hey! That reminds me - there's a train show at the fairgrounds this weekend!

Good lord, I think I need to lay down for a moment.

Somewhere, at this very moment....

A redneck has dropped his budweiser, choked on his crab flavoured snack and sensed something....

Ed, if Lisa belted her husband, maybe he'd be in the same predicament?!
