Bitsy's favourite brewer is Theakstons, she has a fancy for their Old Peculier or Coopers Butt but insists it is served with plenty of head. If she has time on her hands she will have a quick go at the Grouse beater.

Yes - the plan is approved and the crew is showing up tomorrow morning to start digging out the beds. They'll haul away the ancient holly hedge that has really evil pointed leaves - that will be good to have out of there. Then they'll dig out all the roots, take out most of what I've already planted last year and incorporate those plants back into the new plan. They'll refill the beds with some good enriched composted soil, and top it all off with cedar mulch.

The one thing that is staying put is the saucer magnolia. Elements in the new plan are a Tanyosho Pine, Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar, Weeping Tolleson's Juniper, hydrangeas, Japanese red maple, azaleas, coral bells, hostas, peonies, and the Japanese Yew to replace the holly hedge. Also a smattering of daylillies, shasta daisies, dianthus and dwarf boxwoods - the latter being a backdrop to the east beds.

I'll try to get photos of the progress.

Leo, what can you tell me about camellias? I think they may be another good option for our partially shaded (sun from 11:30 - 2 pm) front yard. I was looking at the Mine No Yuki variety, because the leaves are pretty on that one. I really want one that doesn't go over 5 feet or so in height.

Wow, sounds great I love the plants you are incorporating into your landscape. But have them be careful about digging close to your Evergreen Magnolia. Trees feeder roots are right below the soil surface and if disturbed you could get some leaf damage on the side(s) where they dig. And make certain that your cedar mulch is at least 3" to 4" deep!!! Also remember that watering is very critical the first year for the plants to get established. Depending on how much rain and heat you get this summer, you maybe watering a couple of times per week and soak the plants.

Carol, that variety is a Camellia sasanqua cultivar,(Sasanqua Camellia). It will grow smaller than Japanese Camellia but will still attain a height of 6-10 feet. It forms a broad, pyramidal densely branched evergreen shrub. You can do some pruning as it grows but it will still want to grow taller than 5 feet. The cultivar 'Mine-No-Yuki' has beautiful white double flowers and usually has many flower buds which bloom in the fall(September-December)!!!

Are there any smaller varieties out there? Although, I really like the Mine-No-Yuki.

I dated a Camellia if that will be of some sort of help. Seems plenty of liquid make things grow real fast. PM for pictures.

Carol, not that I'm aware of but check with your N.C. cooperative extension service or local university. I will also search further and see what I can come up with. Also if you really like the Mine-No-Yuki cultivar just be prepared to do some pruning!!! I Googled the scientific name and here is more info. Once the plants are established they can be drought tolerant and best to mulch them for water retention. They prefer rich, organic, acid soils but will tolerate other types( you more than likely have an acid type soil, most prevalent in Eastern United States). 'Bonanza' is a low shrub type growing to two feet with dark pink flowers. 'Dauphin' barely reaches six feet and has light pink flowers. 'Mine-No-Yuki' can be grown but you will need to do some pruning. Best to prune in early spring(done lightly)and before the flower buds are present!!!

Wowee -- that's a bit of a harsh option to deal with a difficult period, isn't it? Adding that I am certainly not an MD.

What's Mireyna?

and Carolina if I told you that for 2 days I am really down and out its that serious to me... I have a HIGh tolerance for pain and I feel like Im dying. I sleep with a heating pad, stay on meds to dull the pain, and am overall just tired...

all of that PLUS the crap I have to endure as it's coming--its INSANE...

I'm open to additional options and thats what we will discuss I hope there are some
