Jim, I wouldn't worry too much. Kids are very resilient and bounce back in no time at all. Our son at 2 1/2 years old did a header down a flight of stairs and didn't even have a bruise!!!

They'll refill the beds with some good enriched composted soil, and top it all off with cedar mulch.

The one thing that is staying put is the saucer magnolia. Elements in the new plan are a Tanyosho Pine, Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar, Weeping Tolleson's Juniper, hydrangeas, Japanese red maple, azaleas, coral bells, hostas, peonies, and the Japanese Yew to replace the holly hedge. Also a smattering of daylillies, shasta daisies, dianthus and dwarf boxwoods - the latter being a backdrop to the east beds.

I'll try to get photos of the progress.
I think I'm as excited about YOUR landscaping as I am my own!

Jim, you could spend every waking moment worrying about them and it won't change a thing except to stress you to the max. I had four sons. If I had a dollar for every time I went to the emergency room, I could retire right now! Once, my four year old was being chased across our lawn by his friend. The friend pushed him and he landed head first on the concrete driveway curb next door. He had a concussion. Fun stuff! Kids are pretty resiliant. They scream bloody murder at the time, but that's often more because they are startled than anything else. Trust me...all will be fine! Relax and enjoy that little angel!

Jim - first off, please don't worry about your little guy. He'll be just fine. I still shudder to think of some of the stuff that happened to my kiddos when they were little - and it's still awful every time they get banged up - but they do survive and so will you!

The landscape guys made a lot of progress today and will finish up tomorrow. Here's some pics...

They got the boxwoods planted...

Salvaged plants I'd put in last year - hydrangea, coral bells, dianthus, columbine, and some succulent green stuff?

Flagstone for hose duty...

And the icky holly shrubs are gone, the space ready for some yews...

And then some pics of the yogurty munchkin... she's 21 months old now.

Wonder if those eyes will end up being green!

Yes, but there really is a new birth control thing called Mirena - almost spelled the same. I figured that's what you were referring to.... I think it's a pill but don't pay much attention to the ads...

I bet she does look like Hope's baby pictures! And I have an idea of what Violet will look like when she's 7!

I swear, we really could just mix up all of those kids of ours and no one could tell whose was whose!

Hey Lisa, thought I'd just chime in to say how nice your house and gardens look. I've been building/converting a chapel into a house for the last 2 yrs. It never seems to end! I haven't got near the landscaping yet. Your daughter is very cute too. I have a 4yr old boy whose chops are permanently covered in something sticky too.

Jim, Its terrible when you become a parent, you can't help but get worried at everything they do. When I was a child, I broke my legs, cracked my head open more than once, chopped the top of my finger of (got sewn back on though),got lost wherever my parents took us etc.. The worry I must have caused my parents! Now I'm a father and its very difficult to let your children find their own way, and when you hear of deaths like Ms. Richardson's it brings it home how fragile we all are.

You know what totally made my night tonight?
I went into a maternity store to buy something for my pregnant aunt, and the woman who worked their (the manager!) first asked if it was my first time in the store, then asked "So how far along are you?"

:-| it totally killed my good mood for probably a month!

I'm sorry Ash but that made me chuckle a little.

You should have clutched your tunny and started screaming "Oh God, not now, not here!!!!!!!!!!"

The look on their faces would have been priceless!

Ashley, under the right circumstances(i.e. older, in love,married,ready,etc.....) making a decision to conceive life and becoming a parent is a beautiful experience. You are a young lady with a lot of living to do before you settle down and make a choice to start a family. But when you do you will see that children are a gift and pleasure that will enlighten your own life!!!

Mark, that's so cool that you're converting a chapel to living space. An old church or chapel had been my dream home for the longest time, but the trouble was finding a place that was in the location we preferred - plus, there weren't many old churches up for sale.

I bet the architecture is something. If you ever get the chance, it would be really interesting to see some pictures of your progress.

Oh, Ash - do not fret! They're used to seeing skinny women shopping. I never looked pregnant until about 20 weeks along... lots of gals don't.

Now, HERE'S something to kill a good mood - our landscape foreman thought Violet was my granddaughter!

Oh, Jim! That is SO HOT!!!!! Seriously, a converted barn, old mill, church - wheeee!!!! Fantasy home.... we're very pleased with our conventional dwelling for lot of reasons, but I am very drawn to the idea and can't get enough of pictures, articles, etc. on the subject. Architectural Digest had a few stories back when I was a subscriber - great stuff.
