Maybe that's the problem - we don't have a basement. Silly southern houses!

Hmmm.. can they be started from seed?

Holding out for right now, and planning to visit a couple of more nurseries. I may just see what I can find at Home Depot, etc. I'm feeling very motivated to start weeding and cleaning up the back yard, now that the weather is warming up.

At least half of our back yard is "natural", with various trees and bushes. Wayyy in the back, behind a fir tree and enormous Lorapetalum, is this neglected climbing rose, along with the ancient trellis the previous owner put in about 10 years ago. It gets limited sun, and all the blooms are along the last couple feet of the branches. The rest is brown, scary and very thorny. The thing looks like it belongs in a scifi movie.

Hubby loves this thing, and thinks it's beautiful. You can't even see it unless you venture back there. He spent a couple hours yesterday installing 2 new trellises, and had me help him bungie cord the branches to the trellis and fence.

Or a garage. We don't have many of those here, either.

Not many garages? Where do you put your cars? Carport?

Actually, only the old houses in Oklahoma have basements. Water's a problem in most areas. Luckily, ours is pretty dry.

Jim - what would you do with your basement? Man cave? Play room for William? Game room? Home theatre? Mysterious LaBORa-tree? (with proper British accent)

I hope your garage is suitably sound proofed, squeals and crys will only alert the neighbours.

I have a cellar but no garage

I like the idea of a cool lab but I kinda want a man space...you know that place where I can hang movie posters on the walls and decorate with dumbass figures...little fridge full of beer, tatty couch, old tv set with dodgy kung fu movies on it....

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

My garage is falling to bits, diseased roof members, damaged roof felt and asbestos guttings.

When the recession is done, I'm converting it into an "annexe".

Probably a summer house type thing.

Jim, good luck in fixing up the garage. It sounds like you need to tear it down and start over!!!

Tell me about it, we knew the garage was shagged when we bought it.

Like your typical construction industry yobbo, we went ahead and just had elec and water connected to it...leave the roof etc until it falls off.

Nah...good solid Britsih materials and workmanship....well the walls and foundatiosn are anyway!

All it needs is a new set of trusses, some new membrane, a bit of insulated plasterboard and a new floating floor.

Simple, now I just need the money....and wait for my special project to finally be complete!

That's very common in our neighbourhood - many of the garages are falling down or have serious structural issues. At any rate, they are so narrow many modern sized cars don't really fit anyway. And since we live in an historic preservation area trying to do anything with them is a drawn-out, complicated and frustrating process. (unless you renovate in secret as we did!)

Luckily, ours had an apartment beside the car storage area instead of behind it, which gave us some width to work with. So we took out the interior wall, gutted the apartment (it was seriously neglected), widened each door one foot, and poured a new concrete floor. Now we've got a useful structure with some storage space where the apartment used to be. So far, the Preservation Police haven't cited us. I'm almost not nervous about that anymore.

Here's what it looked like just after finishing - the mason came back the next day and hand-stained the mortar so it would match. Now you can't even see the difference.

Lisa, some of the older homes added garages, and a few have carports, but many (like ours) just have a concrete driveway.

Speaking of laboratories, I just started the homemade yogurt. Right now, it's heating to 180 degrees.

Considering that I get to sterilize stuff, play with a thermometer, and can make 4 quarts of organic, whole milk yogurt for about $6, I'm happy. One quart alone of Stonyfield yogurt (which I used as my starter) is $3.89 at Harris Teeter!!

Cool...My bro in law and I this year are going to try to brew our own beer.

Once we've bought the kit we'll try a few kits first before we start making our own recipe!!!!

And No...that aint my secret project.
