Summer break is over and time for the Dutch GP followed in a week's time at Monza.
Read this statement today from Alonso and gave me pause. One of the greatest to ever drive in F1 in many eras from V10, V8, KERS, hybrid etc. At 42 yo, still a threat at the front of the grid. I think a lot of us can relate to our own situations when we were younger to now. ALONSO: "If I went back in time, I would change something. Winning a championship with a Ferrari would probably be the first thing I would choose if I could go back in time. In 2010 and 2012 we were just a few laps away from winning the championship and this probably could have changed the history of some things a bit. I definitely regret to miss these opportunities. But this is hard to change, it depends on many other people and also other teams, from the cars performance, it’s hard to regret something because it’s out of your control. I know I'm at the end and I won't be driving in a few years. When I look back on my career, I will see many beautiful things, good friendships and incredible experiences. Maybe I wouldn't change anything on team level, choices or otherwise, I'd just change the way I lived certain moments. If I went back, I'd try to enjoy all those beautiful moments a little more and try to have more memories to carry back. I won the championship in Brazil in 2005 and 2006 and I remember almost nothing of those afternoons and nights, and it’s sad. With age, and now at this point in my career, I now look the happiest on the podium this year. Still didn't win, got third and twice second. But it’s because I’m able to enjoy these kinds of moments more: I think that at 20 you see life in a certain way and at 40 you see life completely different. |

Yes, agree we should all be ready for those moments in time…
This comes to mind: "If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two imposters just the same," Rudyard Kipling. We are usually very focused on our performance: whether an accountant tracking the net profit on a widget, or a driver racing to a number. In F1 the young have hormones, fast twitch fibers, and multipolar neurons firing at 10/10ths. It makes them invincible for a time. He is now in a better place emotionally while still a force on the grid. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

It's official. Daniel Ricciardo out of Dutch GP after a crash in practice and going to the hospital where it was confirmed his wrist was to badly injured. Lawson to drive the remainder of the weekend. Thoughts and prayers to RIC on a speedy recovery.

RIC was distracted by Piastri who had crashed into the wall and he apparently followed him in. Crash wasn't particularly hard, but based on the onboard camera, he kept his hands on the steering wheel and at an awkward lock resulting in a broken wrist. Another reminder to all of us on track that if impact is imminent, take your hands off the steering wheel.

Sadly, about an hour ago, RIC is out for the event. IIRC, another driver had slowed at the apex and RIC was heading up the banked turn. Then seeing PIA, he aimed it into the TekPro. I’m not sure he could release for fear of skimming the TekPro and going into PIA’s car. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Bummer about RIC. Yeah, interesting incident as the board didn't show yellow flag until right as he was... and can;t go wide on a turn with a car stationary-ish and not knowing if it'll move....
Darn, bummer and glad he'll be fine overall. And yeah, in these cars you GOTTA remember to let go of the steering wheel.

Messy day…
Practice as well as F2 Sprint race that had this… No serious injuries but R/F and then tried to resume racing but impossible conditions 16°C and soaking rain couldn’t get any temperature into tires. Race suspended and was not resumed. No points for F2 drivers. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

The update isn’t promising. Already one procedure and facing full restorative surgery. Team saying he may be back by Singapore. I see no way for that. The recuperation should be 2 months (maybe a hand surgeon on TRF can verify). And then light duty - not driving an F1 car. So unfortunate that he’s likely “one and done” for the comeback at AlphaTauri. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Alonso 3rd Stroll 3rd from last..
Unless they address the rather large elephant in the room they will never be taken as a serious team.. Shame really everything else is pretty much in place.. |

Hope they can repair the wall in time for a resumption of race. They couldn’t use a SC while repairing the wall.

Well, finally a great race! I think Alonso was the best anyway, this result is fantastic! :) Of course I know Max was there too, won the 9th in series, but since it's not fair to compete in such a different dimension, I think Alonso's performance was the miracle itself, especially with a much weaker car!
In addition, Ferrari was a complete disaster again, but now Mercedes has overtaken them in stupidity. If they are going to compete in this for the rest of the season, Aston Martin might finish second in the championship. Which I would be happy about anyway :) |

If MB thinks that, wonder what the Tifosi are thinking right about now.

This must be one of the best qualifyings ever on F1.
First Mark Webber with a great time. Then Fernando Alonso with a great time. Then Kimi Raikkonen with one of the best laps in F1 history. Even Flavio Briatore was impressed. Kimi in his prime was something else. I think he was a bit lazy and just didn't give a s**t.

I love to watch old F1 races. Drivers were much more interesting characters and as Steven said cars looked and sounded much better. And those were insane machines without today's safety equipment and all that digital stuff. Very analog cars.
Monaco 1984 is highly recommended. Masterful driving by GOAT Senna and superb German talent Stefan Bellof (who sadly died shortly afterwards). PS: Bellof set Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record 6:11 with Porsche 956. That was a record for 30 years before Porsche themselves broke it with 919 Hybrid EVO. Insane talent and was the idol of young Schumacher. Bellof was about to make a contract with Ferrari F1 as Enzo himself realized how talented he was. Sadly he passed away right before that.
