Great lineup GG, and I'm so happy to see Pinot Noir be a part of it. That Belle Glos is a super nice Pinot. The Wagner family has been buying grapes from our vineyard for there Meiomi Pinot Noir for years til present. They do a wonderful job on all there wines. For you Cabernet fans, this is the same family that owns Caymus in the Napa Valley. Happy Holidays! Enjoy

My tastes can be expensive.... my personal favs are Rayas Chatueanuff (CDP) or their Pignan CDP. I also absolutely adore almost anything Guigal releases.. especially their St. Joseph stuff. I have a bottle of La Condriene sitting that was expensive.. I will drink that in 5 or so years...
I believe you get what you pay for..

Another best-kept secret: Oregon USA. Stuff like Haden Fig rivals most French red burgundies.. great stuff coming out of OR USA but the prices are skyrocketing.

There are a ton of trophies on this thread I'm guilty myself of posting some of the Crème de la Crème of new world and old world vineyards. They are fantastic wines for sure I just get so much pleasure out of drinking regional wines from more humble varietals and lesser pedigrees, after all you can't drink premier cru every night, the French and Italians don't.

Sure there is Beaujolais, but it doesn't have to be an actual peasant-wine to be what I'm talking about, probably closer to peasant then First Growth's however. Please share some of your favorite "also" wines!!

I love Dolcetto's, the "lesser" red varietal of Piedmont, great food wine, it's a great share with family and friends when you don't want to crack that 20 year old Barolo you've been saving.

French Chenin Blanc from Loire or 11 dollar Alsatian Pinot Blanc’s, can't beat them!! There is also my wife's favorite, Rosè's from Provence. They too USED to be affordable... Now the good ones are thirty dollars plus because of trendy shows about ladies-who-lunch and drink pink booze...

Anyway share some of your humble-plunk, what do you drink when it's not a "raid the cellar" day?

Great call! You are on point when speaking about Oregon's wines! Check out Willamette Valley Oregon...Great wines that won't be "common players", and sold at somewhat modest prices ($35-48), but like you said, they are getting pricier, so grab em while ya can!

Well said Marc I applaud you for saying that! Not alot of wine drinkers here on TRF would dare make such a statement! It seems to me this wine thread turned into a "who can spend the most, and then show it off to impress the next guy" thread. Granted they are all great wines, but "common players" at best. Nobody with any real wine knowledge, and schooling is impressed. "Big Leaguers", if you want to impress us peasants, show us a wine nobodys heard of, that cost half the price, but drinks twice as good...now thats impressive! Great idea Marc! Lets see those bottles!

Simply...The Wine Thread

Tonight's Wine... A Rather Enjoyable Red Blend.

Keeping with the sprit of Simply...The Wine Thread I offer this little bottle of Love. Thanks Marc (wantonebad) for your observation. There are definitely different levels of wine, I enjoy sharing tasting notes and trying bottles other people are enjoying myself.

"This beautifully layered wine is rich, complex and offers a sumptuous texture. It displays alluring fragrances and flavors of raspberry jam, dark chocolate, black cherry and pomegranate."

Have a bottle of 2012 Simi Landslide that we will drink tomorrow night at home to celebrate another great year as tomorrow is my last day of work for the year. After we polish off the rest of a bottle of William Hill.

Odd question, does anyone do Naked Wine?? Or one like it? What do the folks here think of those types of sites? Obviously not high end but my "cellar" on cellar tracker averages about $12 bottle cabs from all over the Americas.

Good call

For reds, I usually pick up a case of Lafite Speciale Reserve. Sherry-Lehman puts a case on sale once or twice a year. Excellent red table wine for $20ish a bottle. This is also my go to cooking wine so my wife and I will enjoy the rest of the bottle with dinner.

For whites, I always have a bottle of Santa Margherita pinot grigio or Sonoma Cutrer (Sonoma Coast) chardonnay on hand. Both can be had for around $20 or less

I'm not really a wine snob but I have yet to find a sub $20 wine that is consistently palatable

In keeping with "Simply...The Wine Thread"...here's a real good example of a "$25 no brainer". Franciscan has been on The Napa Valley floor in Oakville, strategically located, and sharing property lines next to some of Napa Valleys finest" high end pedigree" wineries that maybe you've heard of..Opus One and Silver Oak, Groth, and others. Now I realize that I'm not comparing Franciscan to these wineries, that would be an ignorant statement on my behalf, rather I'm showing that great wines can be had at a fraction of the cost that share the same soils, climates, and literally property lines! Best of all Franciscan is readily avaliable everywhere, ready to drink, and can rival wines twice there price. If you lay them down for 3-4 years longer, even better! It's only a $25 bottle, it's not a huge commitment for Napa" Big Wood Cab". Enjoy

Check this out you guys...here's a fun "pairing" that we use in our tasting room that is perfect with any "big red", that people go absolutely nuts over! Any cracker with salt side down, Bleu cheese, honey, and ground pepper. I promise your taste buds will explode! Try it!

Simply...The Wine Thread

Friday Night Red. Thought we would try this Blend tonight...Stags' Leap Winery The Investor Red 2012. Blend: 38% Petite Sirah, 38% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, The Wife loves blends and I am starting too as well.

Winemaker's Notes
Captivating for its fresh, lush fruit, elegance and classic balance, the inaugural release of The Investor brims with bright red fruit, blackcurrant, plum and blackberry. A savory, herbal flavor, with hints of spicy vanilla bean, sweet tobacco and sandalwood, add depth and complexity. The tannins are firm, but velvety, and this red blend is impressive for its power, finesse and integrity.

Really enjoying this with a bowl of meat sauce pasta and a salad.
Fair price for a nice Napa Blend! (not a trophy) $33 to $40 ♦ RP|90 - WW|90

That's what I'm talkin about See what a "real" wine thread can do! It's supposed to be about helping each other find hidden gems, helping the less wine-educated discover less known wineries, and discovering wines with unique substance, as well as great deals along the way. It's not about showing off a $300 bottle and saying " look what I got". Sometimes I think it would be easier if some posters here on this thread just posted there W-2 info and be done with it! FYI...That doesn't take knowledge, that's just an insecure ego...you showing us a $20 bottle that drinks like a $40 bottle is exactly what should be here on this thread...well done Roger, I applaud you!

Just like watches, there are all budgets for wine too. No need to disparage those with deep pockets.

To me, one of the best values in a "wine club" if they are near you and you are into that kind of thing. Walk in and pick exactly what you want. 2 bottles a month, rolls over indefinitely, $35 month. We forgot about it when we moved and just found the location near us, had 12 bottles available. You can get 2 bottles of their "standard" wines which are great for $18-$20 a bottle. The Lux line is $35 a bottle and you can trade 2 standard for a lux if you want. 10-20% discount on purchases and points when you dine or buy.

Great great list here of some affordable options when you are not looking to break the bank. Snooth started as a wine blog and has morphed into a really nice little resource. The owner is a good guy, I'm sort of ambivalent about his writing style, it has gotten better but still has a ways to go. What I am not ambivalent about is his opinion or his palate, both are spot on. So if you find the writing clunky don't let it dissuade you, move on and try what he's suggesting. I've had about a 1/3rd of these wines and would absolutely trust the other 2/3rds.

Excellent 2012 Cab and Fantastic Price at Von's. ONLY $14.99 a bottle! So, I picked up a six-pac and picked up a few others ON SALE too!
