Some exciting news out of the Paso Robles area. Daou vineyards and winery was just acquired by Treasury Wine Estates for $1 Billion.

Well…..

For all the parents out there.

My wife booked us in to the most spectacular restaurant for my birthday meal.

Aperitif
Starters
Wine ordered
Mains delivered to the table

My 8 year old goes white as a ghost, runs to the toilet to be sick, I hastily pay the bill and we leave.

Typical

Now sat in our Airbnb, my son fast asleep glass of wine in hand.

Simply...The Wine Thread

One of my sons always sends me a wine basket for Christmas. It drives me a little crazy, because I literally live in Wine country, CA. Our ranch is surrounded by vineyards. I belong to 2 different wine clubs. I don’t need anymore wine. Here’s the thing, though. I don’t have the heart to tell him to stop. At least he knows I’m a “red” girl.

Thanks. The wine was really good but not worth the current $800 price tag IMHO. I purchased it at Costco when it was released so I probably paid around $200. Next year we open the 2001 bottle!

You have to really love the nuttiness and tawny aromas that come along with a nearly 25 year old red. Im not a huge fan of aged wines. I drink my reds at around the 5-7 year mark when the tannins have softened but the fruitful characteristics havent yet faded.

I have a 1969 BV private reserve still to open and recently opened a 1959 Chateau Lafite Rothschild with my father. It was delightful but it had strong aged characteristics that I am not particularly fond of.

I hung onto the bottle for sentimental purposes

Yeah, they certainly are different. Back when we were dating we had a ‘62 Gruaud Larose and a 1969 Margaux. We’ve had a couple 20ish year old Margaux’s and a couple other older Bordeaux’s through the years as well. Some better than others but all very good. I just don’t see $600 difference between a $200 bottle and an $800 one. Frankly, most times a $20-$40 bottle is plenty good. Save the $50 and up stuff for special occasions.

I live in wine country and work in the industry. Most high dollar wines are from marketing and a lot of times, the wine comes from the same tanks and barrels as the lower dollar stuff.
A new statistic showed that 80% of wine purchases are based solely on the label art.

This is so true. If a wine label doesn't look good, I don't want to buy it .

Had a 2006 Jarvis Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon this weekend - It was good BUT I think I should have opened it up a few years ago to really enjoy it even more.
