I'm so jealous! I can't wait to move out of my apartment that I pay waaaay too much rent for (in DC) and buy a place of my own! Now I feel a little guilty about the prospect of buying my first antique Rolex!

My sis lives in DC, and if I recall, she pays a bit more for her apartment than I do monthly for my mortgage!

So did my brother when he lived near Los Angeles.

What are housing prices like in DC? I shudder a little to ask!

We are in the process of getting short and long term disability insurance through hubby's employer. I was just reading the terms, and mentioned was the fact that the "disability" needs to happen while "not working for profit" for it to be covered. In other words, it can't be a work injury? What exactly does this mean? Is hubby covered if he is injured driving somewhere during the work day? What about if he is walking through a job site and someone drops a hammer on his foot? Is there some sort of stop gap coverage (such as workman's comp) that fills that void? Is this standard for employee coverage?

C'mon - my husband spends 60 hours a week at his job. I am alternating between ticked off and worried.

Whoohoo!

I just saw that Bank of America, as well as a few other banks, posted a huge (news anchor's words) profit for this quarter. That is great news, both for the many people I know who are employed by them - and our economy.

Is that because worker's compensation would cover that kind of injury or disability?

Boy, that's what I'm hoping as I guess the company doesn't want a person to be compensated from two sources?

You had already thought of the "stopgap coverage" but I missed that part of your post and said the same thing... as if you hadn't already thought of that.

And now, back to leer... er, look, at that pic of Colin once more!

D'oh. I just realized that I was reading the terms of the short term disability contract. In that case, I'm pretty certain that workmen's comp is the stop gap in that situation ( ie 15 days - 3 months).

Trust me, you don't want to know. I'll just say they're not as high as in California, but a lot higher than south or west of here.

I haven't checked recently, but a typical 4 BR 2 1/2 BA house in the relatively close in suburbs (< 20 mi. from downtown) will be in the $500K - 800K range. The local real estate books are still showing houses in the 7-8 figure range. 2 BR Condos in desirable areas are in the high 6 figure - low 7 figure range.

I agree with Rockrolex. Real estate in the DC area is outrageously overpriced. Even small efficiency condos in the city can range from 2-3-400k. I'm from central Fl originally so, in comparison, it just seems like I'll never be able to own something here.

Hehe, I agree that I need to enjoy the little things like Rolexes now! I'm looking at a rose gold round one from the 1910s!

Can I grow a Knockout Rose bush in a large clay pot? Will it winter successfully? I'm trying to relocate 2 remaining bushes.

Caroline, from what I read on them you can grow them in pots in your hardiness zone. Depending on your minimum winter temperature you might have to mulch the pots to keep the roots from freezing. The plants are really meant to be grown in the ground because they want to grow up to 3'-4' tall by 3'-4' wide(they can be grown like a hedge). Also in summer if grown in pots you will need to water probably everyday. For more information you can just Google Knockout Roses....

Well, it's a little easier when there's no kids running around your feet demanding luxury items like food, clothing and education.

Caroline, I think this is how it works at my workplace..........if I needed long term disability.....first Workman's Comp covers me....when that runs out....Government Employment Insurance takes over, and when THAT runs out, my own employer steps up to the plate.

Just found this Carolina.

Quote:

Roses have roots that need at least 18 inches depth in a container so a window box would not be deep enough. However if you can get a pot that is 18 inches deep then you could grow a nice rose in it. There is a rose called Knock Out which would do very well in a pot plus it is cold hardy. All you would have to do is just wrap it with bubble plastic or anything that would keep the pot from freezing solid. Then you could keep the rose through the winter and it would get bigger and have more blooms the next summer. Buy some potting soil and mix in with it a bag of steer manure. This gives the roots something to feed on plus you get good drainage which is important for a plant in a container. Then sprinkle some slow release fertilizer, such as Osmocote 14-14-14, all around the base of the rose and this will slowly release each time you water. The fertilizer is good for 3 months and that is all the rose will need until the next spring. If you can't find the rose Knock Out then just get a floribunda rose that appeals to you. Don't get a hybrid tea because although they are beautiful, they are much harder to grow in a pot as they don't like containers. Hope this helps.

Hope this helps.
