Where you see the crazy watches is in poor developing countries like Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia on the wrists of government officials earning salaries of twenty thousand USD per year. Rolex marketing is the wristwatch of winners in sports but in reality Rolex is the unofficial symbol of government corruption and failed states. |

Honestly, if I had one and was asked by a stranger in public about it--I'd be a bit scared, too, and try to avoid that person heavily. I don't know how much they're selling for these days, but if I had a quarter million + dollars on my wrist and someone was eyeballing it, it would be hard to not feel a bit nervous.
Then again, that's the ultimate "look at me" watch, so he should probably get frequent comments on it. I've complimented tons of strangers on their watches, however. In Maui, I remember seeing a guy walking through The Shops at Wailea with a sunscreen-covered platinum Daytona on. I stopped him briefly to compliment the watch, as that was a baller piece that I just had to say something about. He quickly flashed it up for me to see, and then kept walking. Another time locally at my AD, another customer had on a Pepsi meteorite. I complimented him on it, and he seemed thrilled--saying he's had it for about 2 years with absolutely no one ever noticing it before. He was nice enough to take it off and let me try it on. He asked to try on my yellow gold Daytona, so I let him try mine on, too. We were both admiring each other's watches, although it was a safe environment. If I were in a city like LA, I probably wouldn't have taken my watch off for a stranger to try on. |

Rob, did you go into the private room to ask and see it?

The watch enthusiast in me obviously would want a closer look. I completely understand and agree with comments though in regards to just appreciating from afar. I can only imagine it can potentially make someone feel uneasy about a complete stranger approaching them and noticing a watch of that value.

Story time: I was in Vegas last month and walked into the high limit at Bellagio and there was a small crowd around a guy. I went to see what was going on and he just hit $165K on a slot machine. this guy was covered in gold and diamond chains and even had diamonds on his glasses. I looked at his wrist and he was wearing a Rainbow Daytona! I congratulated him like everyone else and complimented him on his watch and he noticed I was wearing my Batman. The slot machine he was playing was $2000 a spin and I said that's a lot of money per spin and he said "money comes and money goes, yesterday I lost $400K"!!! I asked what he did for a living and he said he owned 3 gas stations and 2 hotels!

I only comment on someone’s watch if I can do so discreetly without anyone else hearing, including the people in his or hers own group.

I've commented on a watch but never asked to get a better look unless I'm at a watch meetup of course. I saw a nice AP 15500 on a gentleman sitting next to me at a restaurant. Very tight seating. I just said "Nice AP". He said thanks and that was it

Years ago I was at my club and a youngish man who was the guest of another member saw the watch I was wearing and paid me a complement about it, identifying the brand and model. The watch I was wearing at the time wasn't in the same league as the Rainbow Daytona, but it was a "hot" watch that at the time was trading well over $150K.
I was surprised by the complement, and am embarrassed to say I said a quick "thanks" and pulled on my shirt sleeve to hide it. I immediately regretted doing that and wished I showed it to him. Even though I didn't know him, this was a "safe" environment and he wasn't some completely random character. Not saying the OP's experience was exactly the same, but I could easily see this guy I met reaching the same conclusion about me being unfriendly as OP did about the owner of the Rainbow Daytona. I still feel a bit bad, and hope I run into him again so I can happily show him whatever watch I'm wearing. |

I've definitely heard of folks spotting a Rainbow Daytona in the wild, but it’s rare.

that's not a piece you would see very often out in the wild. I also have some pretty nice pieces and have even once had someone grab my wrist and say "WOW IS THAT A METEORITE DAYTONA!!!" It was in a business setting and had met the guy previously. It did however make me VERY uncomfortable. It is hard to say how that guy responded if he was put off by your compliment. I have always been the guy to just say "nice watch" in passing. If the guy receiving the compliment lights up and is open to a conversation about it I will engage a conversation otherwise I will assume that he is not part of this .01% of WIS like we are. LOL

So moral of the story is that snobby people wear a Rainbow Daytona so don’t buy it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've had it happen with the Platona I had. I've had it happen with cars - today it happened.
I'm an extrovert so not a problem for me to accept and share - but the OP's RainbowMan may have just been an introvert or disquieted. Or as someone said - wearing a non-Rolex lookalike. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I’ve never seen a RNBW in the wild? I seen some fakes at the jewelry store, nice but you can tell , they are a modified Daytona’s. Although, I am a watch person like all of us on TRF. I would have been a bit embarrassed about asking a stranger about their watch?
It would be awkward for both of us. So I understand his reaction, I’m sure he was not being rude just, awkward situation? and he did not feel comfortable or he was busy with his dinner party and friends. Who knows? Not personal, I think. I’ve been at the bar having lunch and a someone sitting next to me has noticed my watch and complimented me on it and then we have talked about watches. Cheers, |

Couldve just been a fake or aftermarket one. I was in a Long Island NY Bucherer too a few months back and saw a guy and his wife. His wife had a WG Rainbow and took it off to try something else on. I just said "Nice" and left it at that. But even from several feet away it didnt look exactly right to me and I was thinking in my head
1) Why would he gift his wife such an expensive factory watch when its likely she would just be happy with an aftermarket one and 2) why would he allow her to wear it in this mall where theres high risk of something happening to it. The SA was able to take pics of it and later on the SA showed me and the bezel definitely wasnt right, and he agreed it was likely aftermarket. |

He might have been focused on his party, might have been aftermarket/fake. Question: What would you have said if he had shown it to you and it was not real?
Here's what not to say. Late 1980's, my first job in the jewelry business was while I was in college, and I worked in a store that was an Official Rolex Jeweler. I went on a first date with a young lady from a dorm nearby. In the course of the conversation I mentioned where I worked and she sad "oh, my Dad got me a Rolex" and showed it to me. I proceeded to point out that it was a fake and showed her how I knew (impressing her with my knowledge, don't ya know). Needless to say, no second date. |

I personally would not like stranger recognizing and commenting on my rolex.I would likely say "thanks" but not want to carry on conversation. . I would react differently though, if close friends notice it. I wear it because I enjoy it but not to show it off

A lot of room to speculate. I would be sketched out if i was wearing 500k on my wrist. Maybe he was it eas a special occasion, maybe he was having a bad day, maybe he’s just a dick😂
