I call mine “steel Daytona,” add “ceramic” to date it if needed. Those nicknames you describe aren’t really nicknames, just descriptive terms for certain variations.

No. It will never patina and if you collect the model number should be enough.
Pepsi, coke, patrizzi, Buckley dials, JPS, APH, Platona, Jm… i get it. I think it’s weird wanting to nickname everything that comes out but that’s apparently what people are into. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Why do some people apparently get genuinely upset at certain nicknames but quite readily refer to the GMTII as a Pepsi or BLRO? Or happily refer to a Smurf, Hulk or Bluesey?
I’m not bothered about nicknames one way or the other, however the above does intrigue me. |

I find full grown adults getting this upset by nicknames to be more immature than the nicknames themselves.
Btw, it’s the exact same people that reply to everything “it’s only a watch” haha |

Darth Vader for black, Stormtrooper for white. If someone was to call the white a panda, they (using the same extrapolation logic) should call the current black a reverse panda. I don’t agree with either of those because neither is a panda/reverse panda. If someone really wanted to call the white one an animal, I would say the closer match would be a Ring Tail Lemur. I don’t see anything wrong with nicknames unless used completely out if the blue with no general acceptance.
My AD even uses them when sending “the text”, such as “Heh, you still interested in the new Kermit?” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My friend got a Godzilla. I had no idea what he was talking about. I thought he meant the grand seiko Godzilla. He then told me it was a black Daytona. And how did I not know what he was talking about. I have to admit it was the first time I have heard it called that.
I only know the “panda” for the white dial. Yes I know it’s not a true panda dial. But that’s what everyone calls the white dial. On a side note the black dial was way harder for me to get from my AD than the white dial. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

While I personally dislike the whole nickname thing, it doesn't really bother me if others want to use them: I just choose not to use them myself.
I get it that certain nicknames just happen organically over time (as they do with nicknames for friends for example), but I must admit I do find it a bit childish when there's a sudden rush to force a nickname on every new piece that comes out. Trying to force something feels like a nerdy guy waking up one morning and just deciding that everyone is going to call him "Big Dog" from that point onwards. It's just a bit sad really. But each to their own.

Rolex designed a watch called the Cosmograph. It became associated with the track and speed and timing and all those things chrono.
The association became so great that a nickname was born. "Daytona". It was so strong that Rolex decided to stamp the Cosmograph with its name as well as its nickname. The nickname is "Daytona". |
