It had a smooth bezel originally, but Kevin's dad had it replaced with the WG Fluted bezel. You are correct, it IS a 5500 from 1969.

Yeah the 5500 never had a fluted but yours looks good. It's an easy swap back if you want to change the mood

AK on NATO! Now that's nice! I have one for mine but every time I wear it I feel like I'm cheating on my oyster bracelet

Mine's a 14000M D Serial with a Blue Arabic-3, 6, 9 dial....most of the ones i see with this dial are the 14200. Anyone know why that is? Seems fairly rare...

That dial carries over from the 14000 to the 114200. For some reason you don't see as many. Sorta like the grey dial AK of the 5500s or the black dial 14000s. Not seen as often.

My Rodney Dangerfield (gets no respect) AirKing.

Absolutely love it. I wear it almost all the time. Only take it off when doing labor that might risk scratching it heavily. I consider myself extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to get a Rolex. Mine is not a trailer queen.

As to size, I have a 7 1/2 inch wrist and I am 6'2" 250 adn don't feel as if it's too small. I know not everyone's taste but works for me.

So do you think the AK is a sport or dress model?

As with most rolexes it works either way. Most AK Dials would work well with a black croc strap for really formal occasions.

It seems a little too industrial to be a dress model

Got this for the wifey a couple months back. It's about 11PM here, so you can see the date amidst the process of slowly turning over. If I'm not mistaken, the Air-King-Date/Explorer-Date is the only Rolex model with a date that doesn't click over instantly:

And here is my "Don't-call-it-a-Pan-Am" Air King with the Pool Intairdril logo:

My AK gets just as much wrist time as my 1675 and 16610. I know having PCL isn't "correct" on this old Oyster bracelet but I like the look.

Nice AK's all!

The wife's...
The only Rolex she likes for the size. Perfect size for "larger" look without being 40mm on a womans wrist IMHO>

Hi everyone here in the Rolex forums and especially Air-King owners!

My mid-80's ref.5500 is atm in service and I get it back in about five weeks so pics will follow after that.
Nice to read this thread, only negative side is that I can't wait for mine to be back in my hands. :D
