I shall never forget my last day at Cotuit Elementary School.

There was the great assembly - proud parents, beaming fresh scrubbed hopeful young faces, hearts filled with the well deserved pride of accomplishment and hope for a bright future...

Then came the penmanship awards. One after another the names were called. Palmer method awards...oh the glory!

Name after name, boy girl, boy girl. All except one lone failure. One hopeful child whose hopes and dreams of calligraphic glory were to be forever dashed.

Me.

I was the only kid in my entire class who did not receive a penmanship award.

It has scarred me for life.

Nat, if it is any help when I was at infant school ( I think the same as elementary, I grew up in the UK!) my handwriting was atrocious. My reading level was way below grade as well. It turned out after tests that the problem was that my mind thought faster than my hand could write and my eyes could read so I was given Comic books to read as the pictures slowed me down and a fountain pen to write as that slowed me down as well! Within a year I was beating everyone else at reading and writing..Now if only that was the case with Math

A good teacher is worth their weight in gold I think!

I think I am going to lay the rug sideways Leo so that all the pens can feel it's luxury!

Nat, schools were different here in America or at least the ones I went to, we didn't have penmanship awards. All the teachers cared about was if it was legible. My father was a structural and construction engineer and he taught me how to print. And I like what Ian said.....using a fountain pen does slow you down!!!

We used to dream of walking 40 miles there and back, rubble was a real treat, all we had was a stone. Your granny had toes? luxury, we had to polish both wooden legs, and eat the used polish for us tea.

Luxury! we could'nt even dream of eating polish, all we ad were some used hemmeroid cream to eat between the 10 of us..And we thought we were lucky at that!
