My Friend Tony has the right idea... what time am I invited over for coffee Tony?

Somehow, consuming anything made from, or having directly passed through the digestive system of an animal just doesn't sit real well with me.... Maybe if I was Bear Gryllis.

Glad to see another fan of the Cuban beans. Most Americans never get a chance to sample them, but like tobacco - coffee definitely grows better in Cuba!

No. Spending US currency on Cuban goods is illegal unless you have a travel license. Even then, you are restricted in how much you can spend per day.

I think the idea is that anything spent there (or on those goods) props up or strengthens the regime in Cuba.

I bought that bag of coffee while I was there legally with the proper US documentation in accordance with the restrictions.

I don't think I would have believed it if it had not been on a serious food connoisseurs documentary.

In Indonesia there is a cat called the Civet Cat:

Attachment 140769

The cats prowl the coffee plantations at night (and are fed coffee cherries during the day), choosing to eat only the finest, ripest coffee cherries. The stones (which eventually form coffee beans) are then collected by sifting through the Civet's number twos.

Attachment 140768

The coffee beans is then roasted and treated being totally safe, totally sterilised and totally delicious. Plus there's no discernable aftertaste. And it all becomes premium coffee that can cost around $50 per cup.

The flavour is said to be very heavenly (some say it has a Revered for its luscious chocolatey flavour).

I think I'll stick to a regular chocolate bar and a cup of Nescafe
I won't be joining you with coffee over break anymore, Steve!

I bought the machine (an Anita by Quickmill) from Chris Coffee. Really happy with their service and advice. Seattle Coffee Gear is another great place to buy this and similar equipment and they have really great video reviews on line. The Anita weighs a whopping 47 lbs dry! It is built like a tank and essentially equivalent to commercial espresso machines.

The Barataza Vario grinder is a fantastic bit of kit too. I bought that at the Barefoot Coffee Roaster Cafe in Santa Clara, CA, where I buy my beans. It has ceramic burs from Mahlkonig and nearly infinitely smooth adjustment steps for getting the grind nailed.

My espresso shots have such thick crema on them you'd almost think a quarter would stand up in the cup. :) God shots are not hard to pull from this machine. Espresso that's got a full range of flavor notes, from brightness to fruity and chocolate notes and not a hint of bitterness.

My usual cup is a cappuccino. I make them in regulation size 5.5oz cups. This machine can steam and brew at the same time, no boiler surfing. I haven't quite got the hang of latte art down, but some day, I'll pour them with rosettes or hearts.

I am so absolutely SPOILED with this setup and fresh beans from Barefoot that I can hardly bear the thought of traveling anymore unless I know there's a really fantastic 3rd wave coffee bar where I'm going.

Think of Kopi Luwak as the Rolex of coffee brands. Would I shell $900 for coffee? Not in this life I wont......but to each his own.
