Sounds like the classic "new" sales training: Insult the customer so they come back.

It's why there are so few places I shop any more. Just the 'old fashioned' places that know about customer service.

X2, some people are stupid, does she thinks the customers will buy new jewleries after her ill advised.

I don't think it's fair to get someone fired for being ill-trained, although I did get a mechanic fired from Sam's once for getting hostile with me, although I simply asked that he be counseled.

I always go to a store with some test questions that I ask a sales clerk, just to find out if they know what their talking about. If they fail, I just go with what I know, or go home and do more research.

Sometimes I gently correct them, if they seem honestly confused and not just jerking my chain. Otherwise, I just let it slide.

I think sj1523 handled it well and in the process got a very entertaining story to tell and validation of his love and devotion.

I have been to Macy's or other high end stores a thousand times with my Rolexes, my wife and her Rolexes, Diamond Ring, Diamond Necklace etc. The only comment ever was "gorgeous ring, who is the designer". Nobody has ever asked her to remove it for testing?! Did you ask her to test it? Were you not sure of it's authenticity?
I just find the whole scenario odd - I have worn a Rolex now every day for almost ten years and no stranger has ever commented or asked me to Remove it for "authentication" let alone the diamond from my wife's hand!

Curious

-Pete

It was odd indeed - I didn't ask her to test anything though! While she was showing us Macy's jewelery she whipped out the tester and started testing the Macy's diamonds. After a couple of minutes she asked my wife if she mind if she tested her engagement ring and then moved on to the necklace and wedding band.

Heat conduction testers are not always reliable , as a member already said smaller stones set in gold or other metal may simulate lesser heat conduction and the tester will pick that up and declare it fake ( moissanite in return has the same conduction properties as diamond and the tester would call it a real diamond ) Repeated use with cheaper models will also be prone to give you false readings , low battery charge on the tester too . Also some inclusions within the diamonds may false the reading ( B2 type diamonds )
Nothing beats experience with x10 loupe .

Tristan you are 100% correct! Nothing beats a 10x loupe and a little knowledge.

Wow, I couldn't even imagine a stranger asking me that! I don't even like taking a Rolex off at the AD to have them bring it back and "clean" it. And, my wife has only handed her rings to me or the store that we got it from for cleaning. No shot that a Macy's clerk is getting her hands on me or my jewelry.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but my parents had a similar experience at Macy's. My Dad and my Mom were there by the jewelry section when a saleswoman told my Mom that she should go in for a "real" watch and not a fake (she was wearing a genuine datejust on a jubilee bracelet), like a Bulova (her exact words). She then looked at my Dad's wrist, and commented that he too needed a "name brand" watch. He was wearing an ALS. Unfortunately, both my parents are very nice and mild people, so they just nodded thanks and walked away.

Now that's HILARIOUS As I just picked up a new GV myself and I must say my favorite feature is the second hand I think I would have unloaded on the gal... You handled it very well

I never buy jewelry at department stores anymore. The very last time was when I bought a gold charm bracelet for my wife. The bracelet is a series of loops from which to hang charms from. I bought the bracelet from Macys and then headed off to my (former) AD jewelry store to see what they had for rings or earrings etc. I mentioned the charm bracelet and they showed me theirs. Similar in look but much heavier. They explained that the wire on the Macys bracelet was hollow and theirs was solid. So in the end I bought the solid bracelet from the jewelry store and returned the hollow bracelet back to Macys. The real jewelry store also gave me a discount on the charms I bought and soldered them for free. You can't ask for better service than that.
That's my Macys (department store) jewelry story.

Great story, you should've gone back and confronted her. Then she would've learned something :)

Great story. It underscores one of the ways in which it is great to live in Germany. Here, people must be actually qualified to do their jobs. Even for a job such as a salesperson in a jewelry store, one must complete an apprenticeship and receive a certification.
