WG has a slight but nonetheless distinct hue to it than steel---particularly Rolex's 18K alloy, which is formulated in-house and is NOT given a rhodium plating, by the way. This is a big advantage to current Rolex white gold models, as that lovely grayish white gold will stay consistent over the years and not experience any nasty looking fade or "yellowing". Other brands have done similar things with their white gold alloys (Patek and Roger Dubuis for instance)--alloying things like Palladium into the gold to get a nice tone that won't fade, nor require a rhodium plating to increase apparent whiteness.
Doubt this answer's the OP's question, but there you have it anyway. I like white gold quite a bit, and find its exclusivity (not as much as 950 PT, though), weight and distinct tone to be attractive indeed. Not ENOUGH for me to pony up the dough, but attractive nonetheless! |

WG is awesome. Fluted bezels are only nice in WG. If it were made in SS, it won't sparkle or shine as much as white gold would.
At the same time, as you mentioned, the annoying part about my DJII with the WG bezel, is I have to be extra cautious the bezel does not get scratched! |

SS vs White gold eg. Daytona
It's a bit like comparing a R8 vs Gallardo Same engine underneath but WG/lambo is being perceived as more luxurious while SS is used to make things like exhaust! Both cars/watches look just as gorgeous |

White Gold is awesome. It's called Stealth-Wealth. -As far as on the bezel of DJ. It's just an accent that alludes to the quality...

better question is why not? to me WG looks awesome without having to be too flashy. the people that know "get it" and the people that dont know just think its SS. in the end the only one who cares is the owner.

I'll take white gold over yellow any day....it has certain rich sheen not present in stainless steel. It also had the extra weight. I also understand it's the only way Rolex can make the fluted bezels. But then it's all a matter of taste and budget too. Cheers

The weight, feel, and look of white gold is a whole new level.
Rolex uses enough gold that they can have their own foundry. They mix palladium with gold to get it white. This results in not having bleed through problems that can occur with other manufactures who have to buy their white gold and then requires a rhodium plating to make it look white. Rolex knows how to do white gold!

WG has a slight hue that is much more complex (for lack of a better term) than SS. It's like the Chrome vs Nickel Silver debate for cars. Nickel plating just has that "old school" feel and looks great on some vintage applications. |

One of each, does the trick for me. But I love it best in White Gold, especially with Meteorite!
