I am not saying you are telling us a fictitious story, but if she has the skill to just pop off the bezel from your wrist just like that, why not she instead go for for the watch ?

It may have been that she was just trying to pull the Rolex off the OP's wrist. She could have been trying to learn the delicate art of pickpocketing and just is inept at it. Don't be so doubtful, remember that thieves turn to crime because they are too stupid to do anything useful or positive with their lives.

I'd be more inclined to think that her accomplice was also standing there and using the same grab bar. Then, she would grab the Rolex from the top and he would flip the clasp release from the bottom and she would slip the watch off and hide it in the scarf. It still seems kind of ridiculous but, feasible.

There are thieves that can remove a watch without the owner even being aware. It happened to me in Nice, France and I was lucky enough to grab his arm and wrestle the watch from him before he got away. It was a kid less than 12 years old!

If so then it's very silly IMO and its posts like this that ruin the forum.

All those Rolex wearers out there.....beware of the scarf wearing bezel theif!!

Why? It seems perfectly plausible to me. As a matter of fact my 1680's bezel (since it hangs over a bit on the 9 O'clock side) is very easy to pop off, even with your fingers.

BTW, it's posts like yours that makes people want to not ask questions.

Oh, and BTW a complete bezel with insert is quite expensive.

A SS/Plat YM is not a normal bezel. It is made of Platinum and even at scrap is worth a some decent money. They are qute easy to pop off with a knife edge or a small razor blade.

As an aside, out in California, thieves were stealing catalytic converters from SUV's as they had $1,000 worth of precious metals in them. I guess anything is possible.

A normal platinum or gold bezel is worth several hundreds dollars in scrap.

If it is an older model like a 1680 or a 5512 then yes the bezel can be pulled off easily. If the person knows what to look for such as an older Rolex then they just stole $500.

I find this very hard to believe. What proof do you have that she was actually trying to steal your bezel of all things?

I agree with the suggestion that she was trying to steal the entire watch. There are some pickpockets out there with incredible light fingered skills. I remember seeing a demonstration on some magician-type TV show where the magician guy removes an audience member's watch without the wearer noticing, by sheer light fingered dexterity skill with the aid of distraction by chatting to them.

I agree.

If anything the person was trying to lift the entire watch.

Now if it were me, I'd just climb up into a 1,000ft crane and lower a 1,000ft fishing line with a hook on the end of it ... steal your watch I will.

Maybe this was another distraction ploy? Placing a scarf over your wrist and watch, was to make you believe your Rolex was at risk, whilst the accomplice tried to pick your pocket and make off with your wallet?

They probably think you had a few shillings as you were wearing a Rolex?

If the poster said it happened, why give him sh*t about it? A polite answer is good, if you can't do that, like your mom said, don't say anything.

Is that so difficult?

I agree with what Nicko had to say: "It's posts like yours that makes people want to not ask questions.

As a relative newcomer I often have a question, but lately just feeling like why bother asking it? I'm sorry us newcomers ask bothersome questions that have been answered a million times before. Don't have a forum, just have an archive search feature.

Now fire away. See you guys around

Relax 457. I think you'll find most people here will do their best to answer your questions as best they can. You'll notice there was only one negative comment in this thread. Please don't let comments like that deter you from asking your questions. That said, it is good forum etiquette anywhere to try a search before posting a question. Being a watch forum, there's a good chance the same question has been asked before.

Good luck.

Thanks guys for all your input, it is most appreciated.

I guess the question really becomes if she was after the bezel or the watch itself...

Does anyone know the price of the platinum bezel on a yachtmaster? (Also out of curiosity an 18ct gold rolex?)

If the answer is not very much then she probably was after the watch.

Although I agree that it does seem idiotic to attempt to break a steel rolex band through the force applied.

Which is why I assumed she must of been after the bezel instead...

Interesting

If I remember correctly, an 18K bezel weighs about 3.5 grams.

At $1400 / ounce this translates to about $130, not exactly a huge payoff.

Platinum is no doubt more.
