My Rolex seems not to bother the scanner at security. Not sure whether that's because it's SS and not magnetic steel. In any case, I always wear it. They are not going to get me to take it off under any circumstances. Not gonna happen. I've heard of Rolexes 'disappearing' from the bins and conveyors. And then, of course, it's 'not their responsibility if/when it does.

each year i take a Green suede service pouch with me & as soon as i get my boarding pass the watch goes into my hand luggage before i reach the security desk, it's pointless getting stopped & bringing attention on yourself....plus do you really want to be stood there watching your $$$$ watch sail through the x-ray machine unattended, it wouldn't take much for someone to quickly palm it & move through the crowds whilst you

Just say no. Tell them that you will not be removing jewelry. (speaking of rules, part of their TSA SOP is that passengers are not required to remove jewelry) They will take a look at your arm and watch and swab it. Its not that big of a deal. its might annoy the blue shirts, but who cares? Other parts of the world are different, but in the USA, I never take it off and I refuse when asked to take it off. Just be polite. |

Please understand that my habit of storing things away is my habit only; and it works for me. If you spend a lot of time on this forum, you may want to spend some time on the link below:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...-security-222/ It is one of my favorite sites (credit card promos, airline frequent flyer miles, etc.) besides being here, of course. Food for thought. |

there's many a security guard that'll love that sort of attitude & go out of their way to make an example of you, not 100% sure of airport rules but would hazard a guess that if they wanted to they could easily make it bad for you...

its bad enough that we now have a genitals groped and irradiated with untested machines just to fly. I do draw the line of letting TSA steal my $26,000 watch however. FWIW, on average I fly about once a week. I've never had a serious issue of refusing to remove my watch. |

Typically, I either put it away in my carry-on, or wear it. Have not had any issues either domestically or internationally. When in my carry-on, it is always with my badge, as an extra bit of security (at least in my mind)....

First off--you can wear your watch thru fine without any issues. It does not set off alarms. I have worn my SS Rolexes thru secruity too many times to count-and I fly often. I also have never had TSA ask me to take off watch. In fact I have asked them and they said no need to. So--if you feel like taking yours off--go ahead but don't think there is any reason you need to--seems like a waste of time if you ask me--will keep on wearing mine on me wrist where she belongs!!!

I fly every other week from Orange County airport either to PDX or SFO and have never had to remove my Rolex Submariner (SubC LV or Sub LV).

I always wear my stainless date just through security (25 years now) and have never been beeped or stopped for it.

I've never had a problem with airport security and never take it off. Unfortunately 1 out of 20 times if a belt buckle sets it off they also force me to take off my watch. Very unusual though.

I have an IWC GST alarm that sets the alarm off every time. I tell the clerk before crossing that it will beep, and show him my watch on my wrist. I put it though first and it beeps... I get the wand, or a cursory look at the watch. They so far never made me remove it. I would but I would also ask to be present when they examine it.

The metal detectors are inconsistent. Only once in years of flying has it detected my Deepsea. Likewise with my belt buckle, sometimes it will set if off, others nothing.

The metal detectors are adjustable for sensitivity.
Most of the time my Rolex clears the detector. Other times, they either check to see if it's a working watch or ask me to take it off. At that point I just put it in my carry on. Why cause a disturbance? Just get in and get out quick! |

I travel a lot and only had to remove it once, in transit at Frankfurt Airport.

I am an airline pilot who wears a GMT. It NEVER sets off the alarm. You know those foil packets of hand cleaners? One of those will set it off. It's about the footprint. Anyway, just leave it on your wrist. I also have a Cross pen in my pocket and that doesn't cause aproblem either.

Hadnt had any problems recently, going thru a variety of airport security points..ie, YVR (Vancouver), YYZ (Toronto), LHR (London UK), CPH (Copenhagen) ..and return via YYC (Cagary).
No beeping thru the walk-thru scanner and no need for the physical search either. Interesting that the gold and SS didnt sound any alarm...!!

Funny - the opposite happened to me the other day.
I always take everything off and bury it in my carry on where it couldn't be easily swiped without either taking the whole bag or having quite a bit of time to rummage through it. On Friday they pulled my bag to inspect because of a "large metal object" - my GMTIIc. I asked the TSA dude if I could wear it through and he said its patchy - might go through ok one day on one machine and not on another day or a different machine. Apparently they are periodically recalibrated which changes their sensitivity. The person who said their Milgauss set it off that make sense - doesn't that thing have a big iron cage inside of it? I believe metal detectors detect ferrous metals - iron is what they see and what effects their magnetic field. Other metals do not. Stainless is an alloy and has some iron in it which may make it a crap shoot - but I'd guess a solid gold president would be fine going through. Bottom line - I look to spend as little time as possible under the auspices of the TSA and don't want to hold anyone else up so I have my shoes laptop belt and bag on the table in 15 seconds . . . . put the watch in the bag and keep an eye on it. |
