really into diver watches. Had a bunch of seiko divers before I got my omega planet ocean ( which is by far my fav watch). Then I had to have 'the' iconic diver.. so got my 16610.

I can't really says I was bought by the marketing thing as the various "Everest/Caves/Oceans/Pilots " thing mean nothing to me,but since I was a kid I've heard about this watch brand called Rolex and when I first saw a Submariner in a shop it really felt that watch had a very familiar, ultra classic and ageless design.
You can be a milionaire with tons of fantastic watches, but if you don't have a Rolex your collection will always be incomplete.

Like another post, I bought into the marketing and my first purchase was really based on ego (I purchased a humble Air King 13 years ago). I've since matured and I appreciate the watch on so many other levels - form, function and, of course, beauty. Funny thing is, I prefer that people don't know I have a Rolex. It simply makes me feel nice wearing under my shirt.

Great quote from Richard: "Because few things in life give man as great a pleasure as wearing a Rolex!"

The driver for me buying my Sub was to wear it and then hand it down to my kids, a lasting memory kind of thing.

I aim to buy three (one for each of my kids), the Sub I own currently will be going to my eldest daughter (4 years old), I asked her and her little sister who wanted it, she said "me" so it's hers!

Already thinking about the next one.....

As silly as this may sound, my interest in Rolex started back in my teens seeing them worn by my favorite television and movie stars, most notably Larry Hagman wearing his yg Day-Date on the television series "Dallas"-one of my favorite shows of all time. If I'm not mistaken, Jim Davis, the actor who portrayed Jock Ewing wore a Day-Date during his last year or so on the series before unfortunately succombing to cancer. Tom Cruise also wore a Day-Date on "Rain Man", another favorite of mine. My first real-life sighting of one was at a grocery store where I had my first job in the early 1990's. A guy came through my line wearing a 1970's or early 1980's Daytona with a white dial and black sub-dials. I started out wearing the really crappy fakes that sold for about $30 up to the $200 ones, but crap nevertheless. I guess I thought that by wearing one(a lousy fake was all I could afford at the time), I could be a part of that lifestyle portrayed on the screen. It wasn't too long before I took notice of the other Rolex models besides the Day-Date and I loved them all. I had a fake Sub, Daytona, Datejust, GMT-you name it. I just LOVED the classic and timeless design. Then, after paying about $200 for a fake Day-Date in all stainless with a blue diamond dial with the dial misspelled, reading "Oficially Certified Chronometer", I had an epiphany. I asked myself, "If I love Rolex watches so much, why don't I save my money and get a REAL one instead of wasting my money on this fake crap and being let down?" So I did, and bought a used Oysterdate Precision when I was about 23. Had to get rid of it though since condensation was developing under the crystal even after a full service. My first new Rolex was a GMT-Master I "Pepsi" that I paid about $3300 back in 1999. Had to sell it several years later to help pay some bills, but I promised myself I'd get another when things looked up again-which I did. Rolex literally grew on me, after buying one I got the itch to buy another, then another, and so forth. It was only after buying my first real one that I started to appreciate the craftsmanship, heritage, and tradition that went into making one and the extraordinary stories of those who have been to the edge and back, lived to tell about it, and had a Rolex on their arm-from Mt. Everest to Apollo 13. I even started to collect numerous books and brochures about Rolex, wanting to learn as much as I could. Sure Rolex is one of the more mass produced luxury watches, but if money were no object, I'd always buy a Rolex. They looked just as good 50 years ago as they do today. What's more, they are built to last. Everytime I put one on, it just gives a feeling of bliss and euphoria. Everytime I look at the time, I am reminded to aspire to excellence and greater things-namely being inspired to return to school and pursue my dreams even though to some it may look just plain crazy at my age.

I bought a Rolex because I wanted a prestige watch and on the day that I was all fired up to buy the Rolex AD was the most convenient.

It was in many ways just a stroke of luck, really.

In the time since I bought my Explorer, I've come to really appreciate what Rolex stands for and what an excellent product they make.

Everyday, Rolex lives up to their reputation and more.

I now own two

I got mine for an 18th birthday present, so I wanted to get something that would be timeless, yet reflect a little bit of my personality. I considered Omegas and Cartiers, but there was just something about the feel of a Rolex on my wrist. It's hard to describe, but there definitely is a bit of Rolex magic - I always feel excitement when trying one on that I really like. The Datejust ended up speaking to me - the feel of it on my wrist was perfect, the balance was just right. I also liked the fact I could pick and choose my own dial: in the two and a half years I've owned it, I've never come across one just like mine, and I see a lot of watches in the course of my work. I chose a black Arabic dial, one that has now been sadly pulled from the range, which, for me, possessed a unique blend of modernity and understated beauty. I still don't think I could have picked a better dial for my watch, and I still get as excited strapping it on today as I did the day it arrived.

Porsche, Ferrari, James Dean, James Bond, Ashley Judd & and bunch of baby chicks! Throw in some 800 hp racecars, Paul Newman, F1 pitbabes and we should have one helluva party going on.

Why am I saving up $6,500 for my first and brand new Rolex at that? All of the above. Because I tried on a Planet Ocean then a GMT II afterwards and immediately forgot about the Omega. Marketing, reputation, social stigma, all of that and then some. Because even though my $200 Seiko Kinetic works great I want a Rolex. Actually, I have a valid gripe there - the stem has pulled out a couple of times stopping the movement and leaving me wondering what time is it getting off a plane. Voila! A bona fide reason to spend $ that I don't need to. Not only will my new GMTII have a screw down crown preventing this from happening again but I'll be able to switch time zones without stopping the second hand leaving the airplane, thus saving myself another few seconds of adjustment every weekend! :p Seriously? Life is truly short & precious. If this hobby gives you pleasure then indulge away!

My wife bought me a Rolex for my two last birthdays that ended in a "0". Thus, they are not only fantastic watches that make me smile to wear but also have sentimental value that can't be replaced.

I currently own an Tudor, Omega, Breitling and numerous less expensive brands. Although I have these, I rarely wear anything other than my Dj. For one thing it's the most comfortable of all my watches. It also the heritage behind Rolex that made me want one. Just look at the membership here on TRF

I've alaways like mechanical watches, and growing up, a Rolex had the connotation that "you made it".
After I graduated, got a great career going, I got my first one.
Move ahead a few years.
Still liked watches, but heavily into Panerai & a few other brands. Even though though I often prefer these, and the ones I have cost more than my Rolex's, they often don't get the recoginition of a Rolex.
So for selfish reasons, and because I liked the LV, I got back into Rolex. There are times where I want that noticeable watch on my wrist.
Like someone else said, Like a Harley ( which I also have) or a Porsche, they are icons in their fields.

I bought my Explorer because it is iconic and because of the Rolex reputation for bombproof reliability. I have prettier watches and more technically interesting watches but nothing else gives me quite that feeing that it will keep ticking no matter what.

When I first got into watch collecting the last thing I wanted was a Rolex...thought they were too common. Until I came across the Sub LV...My Mum bought me an F serial in 04 and i've had it ever since...love it!

Since I accuired the LV I've had: a DD, DJ, 2 Daytona's, GMT... and I just love the overall fit and finish, excellent timekeeping, and to be quite honest I like that its recognizable...make me feel like im part of a club.

Needed a replacement beater

Someone wanted my A Series 16710 badly enough that I sold it to him. That meant I needed a replacement beater, so I bought a 116710.
