I'm pretty sure they do accept your watch...

But I'm not going back to their website... I might be tempted!

Ebenezer , Isn't PVD-ing a perfectly good classic Rolex model one of the Curmudgeon deadly sins ? Just after filling in lug holes , upgrading to PCL ,SEL's and luminova ?
Black ? Yes but as in black matte or gloss dials

Sure they will accept your watch and a 1000 pounds check ... only after wearing the watch for 6 months it will start looking like one of these "zebra" things Rolex brought out

Why not keep your sub unaltered and buy something like a PVD Doxa?
The Doxa would be factory spec, under warranty and probably cost less than "modifying" your Sub.
That way you'd have two watches for the price of one, your Doxa would be new and under warranty and Rolex would still service your sub!

Just my thoughts...

Variety is the spice of life.

I saw the ghastly orange DLC in the FS section. Made me realize how much I liked mine:

The Rolex owners who do mods and customizations are helping the purists love their untouched Rolex more.

Faith is nothing more than a belief if left untested.

Good luck. I'm a believer that a tool watch should be designed to be tough for whatever job it's made for. Any coating over stainless is going to have some kind of adherence problem. Which coating has the best history?

I hear great things about DLC and less good things about PVD. How much abuse can PVD handle? Keep in mind that claims of hardness of coating are swell, but a hard coating can still fall off. My understanding is that PVD is just another plating-type system, and the black is just stuck on the stainless. DLC is supposedly different but wildly expensive. Again, DLC may only be "stuck" on the watch.

The only coating that I know of that is different is galvanizing, which alloys zinc with the iron in steel. This creates an alloy bond. However, galvanizing is ugly and purely for industrial finishes. Also, most stainless steels won't galvanize.

Good luck, with your watch.

My watch is a DLC. Technically it is still a PVD.

PVD is the process, DLC is the actual Coat/Material. There are other coatings out there that use the same PVD process.

Has anyone here blacked out a Rolex? If so, how did yours turn out & would you recommend your vendor?

Any stories good or bad that you can share?

Thank you!!
I am really curious as to WHY? What is your motivation to do this? Please be honest.

I don't know if I'd ever do it to one of my watches, however, I do kind of like the stealthy look. I would definitely wear one. It's your watch, and it's completely up to you what you want to do with it.

welcome to the board.

The look is unique and different. To those that are in pain seeing it, then why is it ok to brush the PCL's on a bracelet (yeah I know, they can be polished later.) When someone does that, thumbs up show all over the place.

I say, if you like it, go for it. You're the one wearing it.

I like the current look, but I wonder how many would be on board with the black look? Gets me thinking anyway.

No, not a mortal sin....not even a venial one
What is more classic & curmudgeonly than basic black.....remember Henry Ford......you can have any color you want as long as it's black.

No, I grant special dispensation for black PVD/DLC whatever.......like the Stones sang

So you call someone a troll just because he just joined and one of his first posts is one asking of a reliable source for DLC application????

You guys need to quit drinking the Rolex kool-aid. It is just a watch, and modifying it to fit your needs and tastes should be MORE THAN ACCEPTABLE

I can tell you that Jack@IWW did mine. It cost me $925, and he did a fantastic job. He is very meticulous and particular about the watches that he modifies or services. I had mine done because I have a whole slew of other Rolex watches. I needed something a little different, and a small part of me did it just to get the purists stirred-up. It is part of being a Curmudgeon.

I have 2 other 16600s and many other Rolex sports models. I wouldn't recommend doing the modification if it is your only Rolex. I just tire of the black watch and wouldn't want it as my only Rolex. I love to wear it in certain situations though

That looks quite sharp!! And this coming from a man that doesn't like modding any item! Purist at heart, however, I can appreciate a great work of art!

Nice man!

Welcome to TRF!

I think you should do what pleases you and not worry about what the cynics here think.

As Abraham Lincoln said: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."

I think the same should be said for pleasing people.
