Okay wow...some great shots here!
I just spent a couple of hours playing around with some macro shots of my Sub. Im using a Canon Rebel. I thought I knew a little about photography, though I never really messed around with macro shooting. It's pretty intense to get everything just right. |

Very cool shot! Love the voyeuristic reflection in the cyclops. I've ordered one of those, should be arriving on Thursday. I'm hoping to eliminate some of the shake I get with the 100mm. Do you know what aperture you used? The LV sure is a popular subject, not surprising, I guess. Another clean shot! This is going to be fun. |

I really want to take better photos of my pieces, and I really am horrible at it.
This is indeed a very good thread for photographers who are looking to take better macro shots of their pieces. Subscribed.

ArcticMoose Photo 2 (week 20)
So, it looks like we're off to a pretty good start!
I've had a bit of a rough week with car issues and work, so I haven't been able to discuss your photos like I would have wanted to, and I definitely haven't been able to spend any time on new photos. Luckily I've saved up a few half-decent or interesting shots to pull out for occasions like this, even if my ambition is to use a newly-taken photo each week. This one was a bit tricky because the underwater housing didn't allow for manual focus. Since I had to rely on auto-focus I didn't set the aperture quite small enough to get the indicators in focus. Possibly the refraction index from air to water contributed as well, I haven't looked into it, but there is certainly some distortion. Another issue was getting the damn nudibranch to stay in place, I had to keep moving the watch in front of it. I would have liked to get more in the shot, but with a 100mm lens I couldn't keep myself steady enough at a greater distance, and also there would be too much debris in the water between the lens and the subject. Aperture Value: 9 Exposure Bias Value: 0 Exposure Mode: Manual exposure Exposure Program: Manual Exposure Time: 1 / 100 Flash: Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode FNumber: 22 Focal Length: 100 ISO Speed Ratings: 200 Scene Capture Type: Standard Shutter Speed Value: 6.625 White Balance: Auto white balance Flash Compensation: 0 Focus Mode: 1 ImageStabilization: 3 Lens Info: 100, 100, 0, 0 Lens Model: EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM |

Nice shot! I like how only a thin line of the structure (leather?) of the surface it is on is sharp. I think the watch would look better with the crown up. This would also mean that it won't lean away from the camera as much, bringing more of the lume surrounds into focus.

Of course! Looks like this week is GMT week. Nice shot. :-)
Is that a TT GMT? If so, I didn't realize the painted markers aren't gold, like they are on the TT Sub. It almost looks like it is back-lit. Nice LEC! I just went out and bought a 500W and a 150W halogen light for next week's shoot. Everything is set up, but I'm out of time to play around with it. |

ArcticMoose photo 3 (week 22)
I gave this idea another go over the weekend. This time I used a water jug with the top cut off instead of a glass container wrapped in paper. I bought one 500W work light and put it underneath a glass table and one 150W aimed at the side of the jug.
By the time I got it all set up I had run out of time, so this is what I got. I'll give it one more chance at some point, but I'll need to get stands so that I can aim the lights more flexibly. I will also need a container with a flat bottom, the watch is balancing on the seam, so it is impossible to get it to sit symmetrically. Aperture Value: 8 Exposure Mode: Manual exposure Exposure Program: Manual Exposure Time: 1 / 8 FNumber: 16 Focal Length: 100 ISO Speed Ratings: 100 Metering Mode: Pattern Scene Capture Type: Standard Shutter Speed Value: 3 White Balance: Manual white balance Flash Compensation: 0 Focus Mode: 1 ImageStabilization: 3 Lens Model: EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Last edited by ArcticMoose; 31 May 2011 at 05:30 AM..
