my dad bought himself a datejust in 89-90 which i liked very much though i found it a bit small for my taste. i bought myself the speedy mark II pre-owned of course and was very happy with it. few years later i received the dj as a graduation gift but to be honest i wasn't that impressed with it and wore the omega much more. i even considered flipping it for something sportier.
after a while i started reading about watches and realized that i have a treasure in my possession which i should appreciate. I have been wearing the dj ever since and now i am really glad that i didn't swap it for another omega or panerai but i just felt the need for a rolex sport watch so i picked up the sub.
not a very special story but it shows to me that one should stick to the items received as a gift and that with years our taste changes and we start appreciating finer things in life.

Hearing all that kinda turned me off to the brand, plus because of my Panerai experience, the 40-42mm watches were now on the small side.

After further "maturing" I started realizing that there are no "good or bad" brands...they're just watches and most companies that have been around for a while do have an interesting history....obviously Rolex being one of them. The more I lurked on sites like this, the more I learned, the more my mind opened, and the more I appreciated the brand regardless of the stereotypes (true or not).

Just a few months ago, I stumbled on the DSSD. My taste in larger watches hasn’t changed, and it was the perfect combo of size, history, and financial timing.

So next week I'll be part of the club. Having joined a forum like this, I can see now that specific brand forums are pretty much all the same. There are good guys, bad guys, and everyone in between. There's passion (sometimes too much), drama, and entertainment.

In the end it's all about an expensive hobby...be happy. I will be with my first Rolex.

Thanks guys, Ji

Two years ago I wanted to buy an extra nice birthday present for my lady. Rolex popped into my head. I actually found TRF and contacted a trusted seller that never got back to me, So I went to Miami and purchased a ladies DJ (early 80's with diamond bezel). Soon thereafter it needed service so I tried TRF again to get her something new and avoid a repeat of the embarrassment.
Another trusted seller (hint: bb) got me a bnib DJ and mentioned he also had a matching men's model, so I got it also.
Then it happened........ I contracted Rolex fever from repeated exposure to TRF pictures. And that same trusted TRF seller has helped me to upgrade my collection and hers. It's just that simple!

Hi Everyone,

I would say it was the James Bond films starring Sean Connery and Roger Moore which got me interested in Rolex Submariners.

Till next time...

Always loved watches...

Just the usual progression for me from less expensive watches up until I could afford a Rolex.
Even after I moved on to pricier watches like AP & PP I realized it's not about how much it costs but what you really like.
Rolex all day!!

I love items that represent quality and craftsmanship. Have to be stylish also. Several years ago I found myself looking at quality watches on Ebay. The marque that really spoke to me was Rolex. Then it was 18mths trying to decide which one would be my first. The Cellini was my 'have to have watch'. I bought it on Ebay and it was like new - with box and papers. I ended up buying the 14060M locally after narrowly missing out on a similar (cheaper & newer) one on TRF, a mistake I won't repeat when I buy my next one - which will be a TOG or Tuxedo.

The first rolex i bought wasnt for myself.

Neither my parents nor I could afford to pay for me to go to university. My brother decided to bite the bullet and offered to pay for my education. So 8 years after graduating, I saved enough to buy him a submariner which he had wanted for years but would not bring himself to buy one.

I am now own multiple Rolexes amongst other watches because of the opportunity he gave me. A 1000 submariners would not be sufficient to repay him for his generosity and sacrifice!

Advertisements, friends, family, JR, got my first one when I was 30, second one 54.
For me, it's Rolex or nothing. They are just right, shiny and rugged.

well, i've wanted a sub since i was a kid, thanks to james bond. when i quit smoking five years ago, i told myself that if i made it five years without a single puff, i'd buy myself a sub with the money i saved (at a pack a day, i had more than enough), so i did!

I had a patient years ago who was mentally challenged, I did tons of work for him for nearly nothing. About 7 years ago he moved away, and his sister brought me a check as a token thank you for his treatment. I used the cash to buy a vintage gold OP non-date, my first rolex. It has since gone on to another owner, but the proceeds from that sale helped by another, and so on. My 20th anniv. gift this year - 116520 black dial. And on it goes.

Let me start by saying I never cared for watches. About 2 years ago my father said he wanted to buy me a Rolex. I told him a million times I didn't want one. One day we're at the mall and he takes me into a jewelry store he buys all his watches from. Long story short, I came out with a Z Series Oyster Date (pre-loved). I chose this because I wasnt used to wearing a watch so I thought smaller would be better for me. After wearing it for a year and a half, the Rolex bug really bit me good. I asked him if I could trade uP for a bigger size. He was all for it so I sold the Date (got back every penny), and put in the difference to get my new M Series Submariner. I'm hooked!

My first

My second

I've wanted a Sub Date forever, but didn't have the wherewithall (cash) to pull the trigger, so I went round and round buying homages such as a Seiko 5. Finally, I decided to take the plunge- went into an AD and walked out with a brand new........GMT IIC. Love the watch, but the Sub Date fever still did not go away. Browsing the sales corner, I saw a mint "Z" for the right price from a respected seller and took the plunge. Now I have both and am very happy. Well, almost. I also wanted an Omega Speedmaster Moon watch for the longest time, and the AD where I bought the GMT made a deal that I couldn't refuse. Now I'm really happy. Well, there's this AP RO 15300 that I have in love with for many years.....someday.
I got the fever very badly.

Well i was lookin for a watch to last me for long(didnt even consider rolex at first), but after weeks of prowling decided on a rolex simply cos its value for money! An in house movement, versatility, timeless design, reliability(easy to find parts and sending for servicing and repairs), and of course brand recognition!

My wife and I were on Honeymoon in Malaysia browsing around the Suria Shopping Centre in KL. We decided to check out the watch prices and we couldn't believe our luck. They must have been at least a 3rd cheaper in KL than in the UK (2006).
With prices like those and our honeymoon as an excuse I decided to get myself the Yachtmaster and my wife a Diamond Tag Aquaracer.
Since then I purchased and have now sold a Breitling Emergency, again for more than I paid. The joys of a strong £.
The Yachtmaster is a keeper and one day will be passed to my son. I'll tell him how your mum and I got these when we got married 30 years ago, and he'll probably give it back and say, Dad know one wears watches now, they're old fashioned.

A friend of mine went to an estate auction bought a nice Rootbeer . I talked him into selling it to me. Bought another Rootbeer and gave it to my wife. Bought a sub and gave that to my son. My first one was 40 years ago.

now that i am a recent rolex convert....i almost want to sell all the other pieces and just stick with rolex.
Same here...I started collecting in 1999 with a Bell & Ross (Sinn) M1 Military. I've owned/own many great watches...IWC, JLC, Omega, Panerai, Cartier...never thought I'd go to a Rolex...didn't know enough about them really. Picked up a pre-owned Exp II and gained real appreciation for the brand.

Now I'm hooked...SS Daytona, Milgauss GV, Sub date K series and Sub C...next? I'm taking suggestions...I think a DJII or gold Daytona!

I saw the 1965 Sub advertisement that read, "We invented the submariner to work perfectly 660ft under the sea. It seems to work pretty well at any level." The add portrays a woman's hand admiring the Sub on man hopefully consuming Bourbon served neat in a tux. Sex appeal in 1965??? I began the endless research and added one to the inventory.

My father wore a manual wind SS Rolex when I was a kid. He loved that watch. That was my first exposure to the brand. Growing up I've had these brands - Seiko, Bulova, Tag, and Citizen, all sorts of digital. In the Army I saw a lot of DJs and even more Subs. I bought my first in 1991 - a steel Rolex Quartz. I didn't like it much so I traded up for the TT Thunderbird two months later. Since then went on to Tag, IWC, Panerai, Omega, Breitling, and Zenith. I also had been thinking about the 16610LV. In 2008 I saw an ad for the Deepsea and I knew then I wanted one. I never liked the regular Sub because everyone had one and I wanted something different. The DS' size and the LV's green bezel/maxi dial provided that distinction. I bought the DS last year and a few months later the LV. I also happen to like GMT watches and for a while the Pam 88, B&M, and the SMP was fine. I got interested in the GMT II (3186) and the GMTIIc so I bought one of each in the past months. I think I'll be okay for a while without buying. My goal is to own a WG or YG DDII.

In the year 2000, started with a TT Datejust with roman numerals ad in the Newsweek magazine. My first was a SS DJ in 2000, SS Sub-Date in 2004 and SS Daytona (black forever) in 2010. Now thinking to buy a EXPII, or a Sub-C, or an exp1 39mm. Never stops...
