18k gold is 75% gold and 25% alloy. Gold is very soft.

One would think that for a scratch to occur, the object doing the scratching would have to be harder than the object being scratched.

Life is hard, an unscratched watch hasn't lived.

some people!
...everyone knows there is a team of four invisible dwarfs employed by Rolex service centers, secretly packaged and delivered with every new Rolex. Their sole mission is to quietly and secretly, but incessantly 'work' on every New Rolex to hasten their owners to send their watches into ROLEX for a service and polishing.

Here is the only known photo of "Rolex scratch team"...... be very careful of the one on the right...

All of you laughing at the OP for what's actually a pretty good question strike me as uncurious about the physical universe.

He didn't propose never wearing it or covering it with silly covers. You guys need a new bit!

The more scratches on a watch the more the owner enjoyed it!

I have two watches and both have fine scratches mostly on bracelets. I am not very concerned as I want to wear them and scratches suggest they are being loved!

Any type of friction....so unless you leave the watch boxed and sealed; or live in a vacuum they are bound to happen. Yes even microfibre cloths cause hairline scratches.

Whatever causes those scratches, thank God for them.

There's something sinister about a watch with no scratches, especially a Rolex.

Aside from the gnomes, elves and gremlins, Chuck Norris has been known to scratch a Rolex just by looking at it. He can also start and stop a Rolex by pointing at it. For the guys that have random scratches that can't be explaned or a watch that has stopped after setting a while Chuck Norris is close by. He can even take a Rolex off your wrist , wind it, and put it back with out you knowing it. You may not see him but he can see you.

I sit possible that soft material like shirts can cause this?
...And, hammers, nails, saws, rocks, sand, blacktop, cement, etc. But, remember, it's just a watch--BANG IT UP and all will be fine

I know a bunch of people that, after a while, appear to have been touched quartz particles floating in the air.
