Nautilus/Submariner could also be compared to Aston Martin/ Corvette. Lighter weight doesn't mean lower quality.

Wow not much PP love here...I think the 5726 is a real beauty and perfect for a guy like me who wears dress shirts loafers and jeans. The complications in PP are really amazing, i think that's really what you're paying for in the watch. Also a total dress watch and maybe not similar, but the PP 5026G is really just incredible, I'm buying both of these this year :) im trying to figure out now which one for my birthday and which for christmas?

Great news, I love the watch too.. 31K for a SS watch is mad in my mind, I appreciate the craftsmanship which goes into them, but SS is just not good enough!

With regard to the SS vs. precious metals, I'm in the SS camp. Wears (alot) better and why should adding 1-2 oz of gold suddenly make the cost of a $40k watch more reasonable? |

40K is still not reasonable for gold, but it certainly makes the piece more luxurious..

Think the Nautilus is expensive? Checkout this SS Patek valued at USD 475k.

Haha but in the US buying a house is probably a bigger loser in some regions. I doubt anyone considering a 400k watch is too concerned about the price...

Why do Patek watches cost so much? Because of its name.. Nothing more..
The 5980 Nautilus chrono is nothing special, just appearance! The movement is in-house, but not a great movement.. Just a great price!! Can we call that a column-wheel?? |

I'm sorry but what's the basis for your analysis of the calibre CH28-520C movement? I'm curious about your vitriolic position on the brand.

However I've nothing against Patek Philippe, just wanna remember that all that glitters ain't gold! :) There are good watches in Patek Philippe's catalog, but they cost double the price of watches from other brands that value double PP! Why? Because it's PP we are speaking about!.. |

For dress watches it's the same thing. Look at the Calatrava or any of their dress models. For a watch that just tells time and gives you the date, it's sure expensive. Granted it's of some precious metal but AP/Vacheron/Jaeger/Blancpain/Piaget/GO etc...each have dress watches of similar specs that cost much much less. So, what is it about Patek? But, same thing can be said for Rolexes if you're an Omega/Breitling fan. Omega and Breitling also have COSC in-house movements and similar features to Rolex but Rolex still sells for at least double.

What I can say is that Patek is Patek after wearing my SS Patek for several days.

Patek is a watch for true 'haute horlogerie connoisseurs' regardless of their price which IMHO it's your money's worth.

The Nautilus chrono and moon phase are the ultimate sports watches...
The only thing that stops me from buying a Nautilus is unfortunately they one I like is the only one who WR rating is limited to 60 meters and I don't think it would be smart to swim with a watch with that wr rating. Its limited to 60 m due to the pusher for the moon phase. Just about as nice of a watch you can buy and swim (except moon phase as said earlier) with etc without worrying... The only other watch I can think of in the price range you can wear swimming without worry would be a Rolex Day Date.... The Patek 5960 is my grail watch but the Nautilus is pretty close and something Id wear much more...

I categorize Nautilus line of Patek
As a sports watch for the look and the case design. Adding the complication like chrono, power reserve or annual calendar on the Nautilus range gave the said model more versatility and options for Nautilus fans.
IMHO, I think of the different complications, the AC appears to fit more rightly on the Calatrava model. Adding the precious metal available to it, I think the 5205G with the calendar aperture "edges" out of the 5726 in my book. |
