Dads do a lot in the name of duty. I'm sure it saddened him to have to resort to selling his watch. If your gift can fill that hole just a bit, it will really show that his family noticed all he did and recognized the sacrifice. Deep inside, he's going to be mighty proud of his son.
I can't help but to think that his watch will mean more to you than the watch you eventually buy for yourself. Please check back on this thread and tell us all about it.

I think your sentiments show just what a fine job your parents did raising you. If I was in your shoes and could afford to, I think I would look for two watches, one for your dad and one for you. I think the experience of unwrapping them together would be a fantastic lifelong memory for both of you. I don't think your both getting one will diminish the experience at all but rather would enhance it. Let him unwrap his first. I think the excitement he feels will also be in watching you unwrap yours. You can also preface the gift giving with the same sentiment and verbiage you used when u told us about his love of watches and your love of his watch since childhood.
Quite honestly, your selfless attitude touched me deeply.

The "Buy Both" sentiment is thrown around TRF quite a bit, but in my opinion, it's simply the easy answer. Everyone would buy 'em both if a thing called "life" didn't get in the way. See all the reasons the OP didn't yet buy himself a Rolex. It seems like the OP has decided to buy his Dad a watch and I think that is outstanding. I have been blessed to be able to have a couple of nice watches. A few years back, I gave a TT Sub to my Dad on a random weekday in an attempt to acknowledge all the love, support, sacrifices, etc. he has provided me (I shared the event w/ TRF but I'm not technically savvy enough to be able to provide a link to insert here...my bad). He was thrilled and I was proud. Three years later, he is still thrilled and I am still proud. It was a great day for me...and I was the one giving up the watch! Here's another spin on timing/delivery: Get your Dad the watch and present it to him in a one-on-one moment on the eve of your wedding. Require him to wear it on what will be one of the happiest days of your life (assuming you invite him and don't elope!). Just my $.02. Whatever you decide, good luck!

My Dad got me a sub when I was 21
Bought a TT Sub for myself and gave him the sub he bought me He passed away, and I gave the one he gave me that I gave him to my 18 yr old daughter, and she likes having a "piece" of me with her. (I wasn't thrilled when she wanted the sub that I wasn't wearing...I didn't want to spoil her, and it was a man's watch and everything.....but now I LOVE that she has my watch). Whatever decision you make will be the right one. GL |

Whjat a nice story and what a great son you are to be thinking the way that you are.
I too am a DSSD fan but i like the idea of getting your father the watch and perhaps getting yourself a pre-owned Sub until such time as you can then flip that sub for a DSSD - assuming you are still hot on that model at that time. As a father, I tip my hat to you! |
