"look at me, I have a Rolex." Sounds like he is drawing attention to himself, hoping people in the store would be impressed. It's ridiculous, though, because the risk of droping it on to the concrete floor while putting it on is real.

Here's the deal, after I got out of the car I spotted this weirdo that was staring at my car and my Watch. I took off my watch and hauled ass into the store where I felt safe from the perv that was obviously stalking me and blogging about it. Then I went to sporting goods and bought a weapon, but when I returned he was gone. Close call !!!

I think Rolex is one of the least attention grabbing watch. You are bound to attract more attention with a white or pink g-shock that most teenagers re wearing. Most people in walmart probably can't even spell Rolex, let alone identify one.

If anyone wants to mug him, it would be the fancy car that would get him in trouble but not at walmart per se .. danger is everywhere but yes, you do get more hooligans outside walmart than outside Saks5th Ave.

I don't get it. Was he wearing short-sleeves? Maybe he had a bad experience with water damaging a watch before (left the crown popped or something)?

The only time I have put my watch in my pocket is if I am on foot in a 'questionable' area of Detroit proper.

As soon as he got inside the automatic doors he reached in his pocket and put it back on before even making it through the second set of doors.
In that case I'm willing to bet he just doesn't know what he has on his wrist... Although I feel the one thing one people know about Rolex, other than it being relatively expensive, is that they're "waterproof".

Clearly.

While I agree Walmart has become associated with lower income folks, perhaps this individual doesn't care to spend $10.00 per box for his Kleenex?!

Even well heeled people brush their teeth.

I think he's just a bit OCD, and while we might think it odd behavior, it's his watch. I don't blame him for attempting to be careful. Personally, I would just wear it. Rolexes are tough, and models like Subs and GMTs are meant to be worn and used. I've had my 5513 Sub for decades and it has withstood all kinds of wear, and I intend to wear my GMT IIc as much (except diving).

Please remember many people see a Rolex as the highest achievement, and a piece of high end jewelry. Maybe he does not know how strong these watches are, and someone told him the rain will destroy it.

Maybe he does not know the history of either MB and Rolex (as these historically are well engineered products that withstand more than most think), and has them because in his world these are the things you buy once you achieve a certain financial status.

The man should have put his watch away before exiting his car, if his intention was to protect it from the rain; obviously it's been raining before he exited the car, yes?

The man either lacks the simple planning skill, or just wants to show you off.

Maybe he should ask TRF, "Can I wear my Rolex while shopping at wal mart?". I'm sure he'll get proper advice.

I went to WalMart to buy my hunting license in August. The man at the sporting goods counter (about 70) was wearing a diamond dial, bark finish DD. It was well worn, and the bracelet links were just filthy with grime. I really wanted to compliment him on it, then politely suggest that a mild scrub would not hurt it, but figured it might not still be waterproof at 25+. I ended up not saying anything but "thank you" when done.
