Thanks.

This is the winder I found. I can get it cheaper on ebay through the same seller. The seller has them alll them time so I can try to get one cheap as possible. They can go almost 50% less on there.

Do you think it would be ok to leave it on all day? It would wind for just 6 hours in that time.

You cannot overwind it...won't hurt at all to leave it in the winder all day long. The increased wear on the rotor with the automatic winder is negligable and offset by your reduced wrist time, since you only wear it in the evenings.

Ok, thanks again. It's my Birthday next week so I see if I can get that one as a present.

If you watch is overdue for service, it does not matter if it is worn on wrist or winder. Regular service is strongly recommended every 4-6 years.
Nick,

Would you please amplify your post?

Do you mean that a watch should be serviced every 4-6 years by the calender, or 4-6 years of actually being worn? I had my Rolex serviced back in 2002. I looked it over and put it back into the RSC box where it sat unworn until May 2007. (My Tudor is in the shop now for service.) I have only 2-1/2 months of "run time" on my Rolex, so should I accumulate 4-6 years of "run time"

Regarding winders, what shopping criteria are important for proper selection? I understand that several variations are available in regards to direction of rotation and programmability.

Also, if a person alternates between 2 or more watches every few weeks, is it better to let the unworn watch go to sleep or put it on a winder? Seems to me that letting it sleep would stop any wear and tear on the movement. A Rolex isn't nearly as involved to set as a perpetual calender watch

What about with explicit wrist activity? Or extremely active wrist activity?

Sorry... couldn't resist. I do have a valid question though - would it be a decent 'test' of a ~5 year old watch to leave it on the bedside table overnight and see if it was slow?

My wife and I both hardly ever take our watches off for longer than a few minutes...

I thought you might like to see the winder I got today for my Birthday. It isn't exactly the prettiest thing but it works.

It winds for 1 hour then rests for 3 hours then repeats. I still only intend to use it during the night but it might as well stay in it until I get it out.

WMV of it winding (2.3MB).

Well it's better than calling it the "JJ Shirley Temple Shake".

I was also told by a Rolex expert that you should not shake the watch, just wind the crown, and IF required a gentle nudge.

Like I've already said....first a gentle "Brandy swirl" to set it in motion....and then wind away to glory!!

Been doing it for 30 years - never a problem!!
