Both are great. Each of us has to follow our own desires.

Get the DJII if you don't have a Rolex, if you already have a Rolex then get the PAM...for me, the PAM is not a great daily wear watch, but Rolex is...PAM is great for the weekends....just ask my 292!!

The Panerai is much less common, if that matters to you.

I must agree with a previous poster that the Rolex is a better daily wear watch.
I wear my AK daily and it's very comfortable. The Pam, however, is a bit on the bulky side and has a leather strap, which isn't conducive to my line of work. My Pam will be primarily a weekend watch.

I have a Pam 113 and the movement looks like this. The gold Radiomir's movement looks to be the same calibre just the bridges seem a little different

I was in the same dilemma as you, but after having several friends own panerai's I decided i want my first nice watch to be a rolex. I went with the DJII and never regretted the decision. The Panerai's I wanted were all in the 10-20 range anyway. Now I don't think I would even buy a Panerai.

The watch back in the last picture is actually an entirely different Panerai and not from any of the models shown in the pictures before, check the crowns to see that they dont match. The reason why you are so impressed with that watch back is because it is one of the rare and infamous Minerva movements used for the limited edition models PAM 398 and 399. This particular one is the pam 398 and is limited to 100 pieces and will be pretty expensive (retail 37,000 Euro) |
