Here in the UK at the moment (under current prices) it is £7,700 which works out at roughly $11,800

Now, any non-EU citizens are entitled to reclaim VAT when they leave the country and when you take off the VAT on the £7,700 (which is £1,283) it leaves a pre VAT price of £6,416 or $9,856. Are our US brethren likely to get a $2,150 'discount' from an AD on their DSSD, I don't know? But either way there's a hefty gap there given the influx of potential Rolex buyers during the Olympics.
DSSD in the uk is £7070 not £7700

Apologies, you are, of course, correct - early morning following a long flight and brain is fried!

The figures are, therefore, even more appealing to our US brethren:

£7,070 = $10,870
VAT: £1,178 = $1,809
TOTAL EX-TAX Price: £5,892 = $9,051

A whopping $3,000 difference between the $12,000 US list!! Can't see Rolex not wanting to trouser that extra cash. . .

Your argument originally was for Rolex raising the price and now you're using the current one ? Maybe if the prices don't go up I could see some people buying.

£7,070 may come to that many dollars when you use a currency exchange rate but I just put it into an actual Visa exchange price which gives you the cost to your card and it came to $11,200. That's including a 2% commission which American Express give and others can go as high as 5. WHatever money you get back at the airport you will probably pay when you land in America for import.

I'm not sure what the cost of taking a watch into the USA is but I doubt it's cheap. If it really was $3,000 cheaper then people would buy their watches in the UK as the difference would probably pay for the flights.

I made no "argument" for Rolex raising the price, I simply said that I can't see Rolex wanting to miss out on the Olympics to increase their profit margins.

Exactly my point and is the very reason I quoted the current prices, in order to point out the disconnect between the two figures.

There are plenty of ForEx services that allow you to transfer sums of money of this size at rates far better than the credit cards.

A thing that just struck me is that should a canny American buy a single Ernest Jones share (and obviously purchase the watch from EJ), they would save themselves a further automatic 10% - thus bringing the differential to nearer $4,000!!!
