I would not worry about any scratches that appear on the clasp and would not tape it or anything... just wear and enjoy and when it gets all scratched up if it bothers you just get some cape cod. It will do wonders and all the scratches will disappear

Yep - its called helicopter tape!

I haven't tried the tape idea but to each his own. There are a number of nice ideas here for bracelet booties or clasp condoms - I'd say lets start a Kickstarter project

Not IMHO. Doesn't scotch tape leave a sticky adhesive residue when you peel it off? And if the tape breaks when peeling off leaving a small portion of tape on the gold part of the clasp, I am thinking just to remove that small portion of tape would be enough to scratch the 18k.

Surprisingly no residue...but I've not had it on for longer than a week or two before changing it out...I think the transparent tape leaves more of a gummy residue than the more opaque tape..

Okay then I will have to try it out myself. I simply cannot stand scratches on my clasp and have been looking for ways to prevent it.

I've been using tape on my GMT C since new on my clasp. Just remove before submerging in any water, particularly hot, to prevent sticky residue.

I am hoping that Zagg, one day, will produce the invisible shield protectors for the clasp, crystal and bezel for all Rolex tool watches.

In fact they do for Omega.

I've been doing the same thing for years. I use clear plastic 3m tape. Works great, no big deal to do, no one ever has noticed it and none of my bracelets have any scratches.

Taping up your watch, sorry but I do think that's ridiculous.

Halfway seriously now:

I think part of the dilemma stems from the value we place on stuff we buy. Do people use shoe horns for their shoes...or are they just shoes? (Granted - no one walks around with plastic covering their shoes - but you sorta get my point)

As someone who first grew up in a 3rd World country without the luxuries many others take for granted, I remember the way my American friends took care of their toys compared to how I took care of mine. Easily replaceable for them, not so much for me...so while the vinyl covering the Eames and Nelsons is a funny idea, I can see how it would make sense to those of us who grew up bitterly poor. It's probably a function of value placed on goods bought.

All THAT being said, I don't cover or 'pamper' my other watches from PP, AP, LP, or Glasshutte the same way, and they're all more valuable than my first Rolex (I just got this a few months ago)...why, I remember Scuba diving with an old TT Hublot and flooding it with water

For WIS, are watches really just watches? If that were so, would we be avid fans of such forums? If a watch were truly 'just' a watch, I submit that we would care less or not as much about finding about them and congregating with like minded friends. ie. The missus still can't tell the difference between her 24, AQ, Naut, or DJII - so for her, yes - a watch is 'just' a watch.

I wouldn't claim the same for me.

I'm curiously timing myself to see at what stage I cease to care about this bauble on my wrist and treat it like all my other watches...

Altogether an interesting line of reasoning - given all the threads about "can I submerge my Sub, DSSD"?, "what's the investment value of my new LV?", "If the font on my watch is different from a different Mark - is it less of an investment?"...I care little for the 'investment value' of my watches for I don't 'turn them' or plan to sell them...I am just treating it like the treasure it is to me presently - till the point it ceases to hold the same level of fascination, rip off the tape, and treat it like the 'watch' it was always just meant to be.

It is all relative to the condition you desire to keep your watch in.

Just because someone doesn't mind surface scratches on their watch does not necessarily mean they value or care about the watch any less than he who puts scotch tape on their watch.

I love my Sub and it has a lot of sentimental value to me, considering it was given to me by my wife and is engraved. Do I put scotch tape on it? No...I accept that it is a watch I wear everyday and care for it accordingly. I accept that in doing what its supposed to be doing, that is...sitting on my wrist - it will get scratched. Does that mean I take the watch for granted? Absolutely not. My wife and I work hard for what we own and nothing is taken for granted and certainly not easily replaceable.

Very sensible comments Eric. I also think that when the watch has a few honest scratches on it you can enjoy it more without being paranoid about it acquiring the smallest mark or blemish. Obviously its sensible to be careful with your watch and perhaps if doing an activity where it may be prone to getting unduly damaged, remove it, but common sense and perspective needs to rule here.
