Imagine a machine with over 100 moving parts, precision machined and hand assembled. Now imagine that same machine can keep time with accuracy to only a couple of seconds a month. Imagine that machine fits inside a wristwatch. Imagine that wristwatch has been to the absolute most extreme places on earth and even into space. Imagine that watch has been underwater to crushing depths and extreme temperatures. Imagine a mechanical watch like that is available to the general public.
I had to be a part of that.

A mixture of all the above - father, magazine adverts etc but I think the main inspiration was from my very 1st boss.
I was a 'wet behind the ears' young 15 year old apprentice and here was this self-made man who ran his own sucessful small-sized business and what did he wear on his wrist - an eye catching shiny timepiece that had a distinctive red and blue ring around the face..................the same fellow is still going about and still wears the same 1675 to this day.

Good analogy EBR. As a mechanic myself, telling time via mechanical movements is just marvellous. We gotta have pistons in our watches soon!

That is one beautiful watch and the very reason why i prefer the dress rolexes to the sports.

The goal of a Rolex started when i was a young kid! I saw one in a shop and the man told me- Those are for people who are successful in life!

Side note on Tom Selleck, on the finish of the filming of the last episode of Magnum PI. Tom used his proceeds from the last season to go out and purchase Rolex watches for all crew members, something like 100 people!!! He bought them all from ADs scattered throughout Hawaii and pretty much emptied their stocks of SS models!!!

HEHEHE!

Well I am a red head and I have a Corvette Z06 and a Viper :) and I wanted a watch that would withstand the abuse that I dish out and would look nice and have some nice sparkly diamonds on it :)

I wanted a watch instead of a ring for my anniversary....and the "best" is supposed to be Rolex....my Tag couldn't handle the abuse...

So we shall see if the Rolex lives up to its counterparts in the automotive world. My Z06 is 6 years old and has been raced...never any major issues.....:) Can the Rolex hold up that well?

Sidenote.

I was an extra on a few Magnum Episodes. True story. I was HPD and they used real officers to play the parts of officers on the show.

Met Tom Selleck. Really nice and humble guy.

I got my black/red GMT II in October 2003. Prior to that, I have been wearing Tag Heuers for a decade. Had 3, to be precise...

Coming back to Rolex, I remembered watching Infernal Affairs II (a blockbuster Hongkong triad movie). In it, all the actors were wearing Rollies. I spotted an Air King, a Day-Date, and several SS Submariners.

My interest was piqued and I knew I had to get one...

I subsequently got my Seadweller in April this year. Had to get it, to beat the 2% GST increment!!!

As a kid, I was always drawn to Rolex watches. My family never had any - way too poor. But I always told myself that I would have one someday. It took me 58 years to finally get to a point where I could justify getting one.

Then another...then another...then another...then one for my wife...well, you know how that goes...

I would say 007 movie Live and Let Die then seeing the Magnum episode 1 of Season 4 in the mid 80s. After all the highschool activities and early college years made me focus on the finer things like cool watches and nice stereo equipment and clothes. My Dad was big into Seiko digi, sisters and bros Swatch, Fossil, ESQ, and MOvado.

I suppose because I am a snob and I want the best (or one of the best!). All the fake Rolex watches in Bangkok inspired me, after buying a multitude of items of the materialistic nature a house, Ducati's, MV Agusta's and a few cars a decent watch was the next thing to sink my dwindling assests into. Maybe I am more hollow than I thought

I love Rolex. My father used to treasure his fathers OD.
Seeing his love for that watch plus the glossy Rolex catalogue sent to him before every Christmas certainly had an effect on me.
The Sub in Live and Let Die also helped a great deal.
An interesting point and it is kind of shallow...I always remember the Triplock crown blurb and that I always associated this fancy crown with Rolex's best watches.
I always wanted a watch with the three dots to have a better one than my dad's....ironic really that his latest TT DJ was still more to purchase than my LV.

Magnum P.I. boy that brings back memories. I had a few pals who were extras on that show.

I was always drawn to his Rolex pepsi. Remember the beginning credits where Magnum slaps a magazine into his 1911, pepsi prominently displayed? Or am I imagining things?

I don't seem to remember Rolex is Hawaii Five-O. Sighting's anyone?
