cool pix! here's another "underwater" 16600

good you wear yours on a nylon strap when diving, as you wouldn't want to have it inadvertently fly off your wrist when you're swinging your arms and moving about under water like this 16600 found by a shell diver in a coral reef here in the south pacific.

upon inspection of the watch, the rolex tech figured that it was submerged in salt water for at least 2 years for the crown of sandwich metal to erode in that manner. he also surmised it was worn without a wetsuit as this is the warm water tropics, therefore the extension was not deployed...as the pics show the diving extension was solidly caked up and stuck in the shut position. the fliplock was very loose, could flick open with just a gentle nudge of a fingertip, so we assume the thing opened up when the scuba diver was swinging his arms while diving around the reef. the bracelet itself was intact and otherwise fully functional so there was no failure of springbars or broken components to cause the watch to accidentally come off a wrist.

despite this underwater ordeal, when the watch was initially found and handed to the owner of the island where the reef is located, he gave it a quick shake and the thing ran like nothing ever happened!

Great Photos. I have heard that the shine on SS watches attract fish, can anyone confirm this?

I've had a Rolex or other brand SS automatic watch on my wrist (occasionally on SS bracelet) for close to 300 dives over the past 6-7 years. I've never had even one occasion where I found this to be the case. Supposedly, barracuda can be attracted......but even though I've had 5-6 around at a time on some dives, I've never been threatened. Typically divers are chasing after the sharks, barracuda, or big moray eels attempting to get a photo.......not the other way around.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and thank you Janice for those pictures of the SD. I would have guessed that it had been underwater for a week, not two years.
