People know better. I'm not exactly known for taking things lying down and I would be arguing back.
It's gonna be worse for me when I grow up. I plan on picking up used BMW/Audi 2 door coupe's for the rest of my life. Right now you can get them for about £16,000 if you look around. When I'm wearing a Nautilus that costs more than a car I'm sure people will have something to say. Especially given that a nautilus is a SS watch that to the non-wis eye looks rather "average". I know guys who spend lots of money on strip clubs, guys who spend lots of money on cars and worst of all guys who spend lots of money on fancy restaurants. I get a better return on my watch than any of them. |

FYI people will almost NEVER recognize that you're wearing a Rolex unless you say "Hey, check out my Rolex!"
I can assure you, anyone who blatantly hates on the entire concept of expensive watches doesn't know enough about them to recognize an expensive watch anyway. Anyone who knows enough about Rolexes to notice that you're wearing one will probably think it's cool. I never bring up my watch unless somebody asks about it, and that seems to work well. Why is it I get the feeling - Whenever people who don't recognize it right away as a Rolex, and I tell them it is. They immediatley think you've got too much money on your hands (wrist). Why is it I feel guilty for owning such a nice watch? Ever get the same feeling?

Hope you have learned an important lesson. I had the same experience in 1985 when I got my first Rolex. Modesty is a virtue and will serve you well.

People seem to make a lot of bad assumptions re: Rolexes. My sister and brother in law were ranting about a friend of theirs who had a Rolex but complained that he didn't have a retirement account. They made the assumption that every Rolex is a 10k watch. I showed them a number of watches on eBay and mentioned that he could likely get at least what he paid for it if he decided to sell it, and likely more. That seems like a pretty good retirement account to me...

ya I buy used bmws benz ect costs the same as a new honda to each their own, but in reality most people buy things to show off or are brainwashed by marketing, i would say most people are like that because rolex, bmw, gucci ect you pay for the name,,whether you argue better quality ect i think thats bs maybe to 10 percent of people that are REALLLY into the car or the watch or clothing but in reality 90 percent do it for the name most just wont admit it and come up with an excuse,,,to the people that dont buy luxury goods that have a pile of investments ect they are the smart ones I think,,,just wish I was one of them although I believe in living a balanced life spend some save some
but I know people making over half a mill plus that would not spend that much on a watch or car so depends on the person, some people like boats that cost a fortune i believe spend it all you live once, but dont cry if you cant pay bills or retire after lol |

There are so many ways to counter the things that were said to you. Maybe the people who question your decision to buy a Rolex spend money on golf, or cigarettes, or Starbucks every day. That's their choice and if that's what they choose, they'll kiss that money goodbye. You can always remind them of that while pointing out that you can recoup every penny you spent on your Rolex (sometimes more).
Be prepared later in life to receive remarks of the opposite kind too - I went to an office Christmas party for my wife's employer one year (a hospital). Some of the doctors had heard of my interest in watches and wanted to see what I was wearing that evening (a 1957 Omega Seamaster - not terribly expensive, but a beautiful vintage watch, well suited to formal wear). One of the doctors took one look at it and remarked, "Oh.... so you don't collect nice watches?" I thought to myself, "Really, dude?" What kind of #$%@#& makes a remark like that to anybody?

Yes mate I take it pretty bad from mates about buying my watches. But I accept it and wear them and I'm thankful I'm in a place I can afford them as most of my mates cant and I certainly would never stop wearing my watches because of this.

While I could sell my sub for at least 2x what I paid for it, it's not a retirement strategy.. it's my watch.

I was 39 and had built and sold a business before I upgraded my £100 Tissot to whatever I've got in my collection.
No grief from anyone. They'd know better. |

No hassles here, but I definitely do not show off my watch and would never post pictures of it on Facebook. Tell them that a Rolex is free to wear. You purcahse it, wear it for a few years, then can sell it and make back all of your money.
I've found that the older I get, the less I care what others think of me. You should wear your watch and stop worrying about what others think. I'd ask that douchebag brother what he spends his money on, then give it right back to him, or just put him in a sleeper hold until he cries Uncle!

I don't like to bring attention to anything I own, be it watches, cars or whatever. I buy them because I love them, not to display any material wealth (and the original poster is clearly like I am as well, he bought it because he always wanted one). Buying anything simply to show 'status' is just über lame in my opinion. My advice is to only discuss it with true friends and fellow enthusiasts. Frankly I'd tell everybody else its a fake. Let them think what they want, you and those who matter will know what it is and why you have it. The only people who could call you out on it not being a fake are the people whose opinions really count anyway. Posting, or even discussing this with anybody else will very likely only bring jealously or negative comments as the value of these watches is rarely understood by non enthusiasts IMHO. I wish I'd spent big dollars when I was young on a rolex. It would have saved me all the money I blew back then, and I'm so old that would have meant serious profit by now. |

Consider the source, anyone rude enough to make disparaging comment should be discounted.
I do think it valid point for only someone close to you to inquire about your ability to afford it, but at same time they would need to be polite and respectful for your decision. My nephew at 20 bought a big truck with huge wheels, since deal was already done I complimented him on it and said how much I liked it because it really was sweet, but I also asked if was able to save for other goals....Uncles way of helping him keep focused. Enjoy your watch and discount the rude comments....after a while you'll never know money was gone. With that said, money invested for future today will grow faster and more than money saved in future.....sorry, as an uncle I couldn't help myself:) Chuck |

There will always be people who don't understand the money we spend on watches. My mother is one of those. My wife gets it, but not many others do. We each have our interests, hobbies, and addictions. I bet a person spends the same amount on cigarettes and booze over a 5 year period.

Good advice. And the people who would know what it really is know why you would describe it as a fake, too.

Your mistake was not in buying the Rolex, but for posting that on Facebook. Few understand the brand except when you're mingling with those on TRF.

That's just something I would never, ever do. It's a Rolex. To me buying a fake anything displays insecurity or low self esteem in oneself. If I can only afford a Casio or a Timex, then that's what I buy.
I don't buy anything to be a 'status symbol'. I bought mine because I wanted a quality mechanical watch. Edit... Casio makes a good watch, I love my G-Shock!! |

In my view nothing good ever comes out of trying to display or convey wealth, even if it was unintended. Frankly I think people who buy anything expensive purely for the reason it's expensive will rarely get what they crave (adulation). This is not the 19th century. |

i smell nothing but jealousy. driving a ferrari at 20 vs 60 feels sooo different. i wish i could afford one when i was 18. "there are so many $50K cars out there exposed to sun and rain" that's what i usually say when encounter some idiots like that. when you post anything on fb, you kind of expect that to happen---compare and complain. there are always someone with better or pricier gadgets, and thats why i never do fb. its your $$ after all, i would wear it even more in front of your friends, shove it right in their face.

Don't care what they say...
Use it as a motivator for your life. You used it as a goal and you were able to attain that goal
Everytime you look at that watch just remember its a milestone and you can use it to motivate yourself to the next milestone, not everyone will understand that can be had with just a "watch". |

The majority of people out there would 'relate' to you spending 100 bucks on a fake rather than 15k on the real deal, and in the meantime you're not setting yourself up as a target. It's just a flaw in my personality I guess. I drive a beater to work, and the really good car comes on the weekend. Maybe I'm just screwed in the head! |
