As long as we're on this subject, has anyone taken one of those DNA-heritage tests? You can get them done for a couple hundred bucks and they are supposed to be able to tell you within a few hundred miles of where your family began.

I've thought about doing one of the tests to prove my descent from Scandinavian royalty.

My dad did a DNA test that calculated he's 96% Scandinavian and 4% undetermined. My mom is 60% Scandinavian, 25% Eastern European, 8% Turkish, and 7% Middle Eastern.
Going to do mine to compare with my parents.

There are paternal, maternal, and non gender specific DNA tests. My parents used the non gender specific calculating back about 1000 years which would be the time the Vikings migrated toward Germany and England.

Mom's side came over on the Mayflower, John Alden. Looked into joining the Mayflower Society but it was way too much hassle. Can show the family tree, but it would be tough to provide birth/death records from that long ago!!

Yes, all the way back to Bluetooth and beyond to Eric the Red in part, also blood back to clan Gordon in Scotland, and my mother has ancestors that were on the mayflower and an officer in the revolutionary war. Still have his flintlock handgun.

There's a lot of resources to take on the challenge of obtaining that information. It can be done in many cases

Geneaological research is very difficult for a lot of people because of the facts of history. African American and Jewish communities are just two examples of folks who face a lot of difficulty locating or reconstructing documentation (and yes, I know the nice TV show by Skip Gates on black history).

DNA is fun but still leaves the more interesting storytelling murky.
