Since you're at least partially interested in the attention factor, I'd agree that a used Sub would be a better choice. Don't get me wrong, an Exp1 is definitely a Rolex and a great watch, but it's missing some of the styling cues like the cyclops or rotating/fluted bezel that many identify with Rolex. And it doesn't have a date function.

I think that what ever you wear if you are comfortable wearing it then it is perfect. Only a very few will take notice of a watch and of those, only those who know the value will take notice. What statement will it have to those few who notice, well...
They will simply know that you are man of good taste and have high standards that you are not afraid to show. What is that..confidence! Confidence is appropriate and admired at any age.

Thank you everyone who helped out in a nice way...you guys have been wonderful. I'm new to the watches world but I like simple watches...I wouldn't prefer the Omega speedmaster over a Rolex Explorer.
When you say Sub, you mean Submariner? If so, isn't that more expensive (1 or 2 grand) than the Explorer? So how will I save money that way? Also to note, I'm not coming from a wealthy family. Actually, we still rent an apartment and I drive a Jeep. My priority when I graduate is to get a house of course first. But I believe a Rolex is like money in a bank, it's value will hold still for the most part and as long as it's not damaged or stolen, you can sell it whenever for almost the same price if not more than you originally purchased it for. Cars will depreciate, anything else will except a Rolex for the most part. I work while going to pharmacy school and I believe that rewarding myself with a 6K watch isn't impossible, because I plan to get a daytona once I graduate since it's too expensive for me now. So college student has nothing to do with getting a Rolex.....but Superdog makes a good point about people might be thinking I inherited it. But in all honesty, most ppl that will be seeing it are my college friends and they already know which family do I come from and that I'm NOT wealthy at all so inheritance is out of choices. And finally, to the one that think about immature (You know who you are)...please tell me something about you that make you more mature than me or more successful, and thanks! Thanks again!!!! |

Today I own nothing that I purchased/owned when I was 21. Had I purchased the GMT that I wanted to purchase with the money I was given to buy a computer when I was in school, I would have been a far wiser person. We live and learn.
Go buy your watch. Forget about what people will think or say. And stop worrying about what you want people to think or say about you. Man up. Buy the watch you want because you like it. You will likely have this watch a very long time so buy what appeals to you the most. |

I think it suits to perfectly. A Sub ND would be a good choice as well.

And btw, I recently bought my first Rolex (the new Explorer I) for my 23rd birthday. I was making some money after graduation and wanted to mark an important time in my life before going to medical school. So if you have the ability to buy it yourself, then you should do it, as you will have made an investment worth being proud of for then next few decades as you enter pharmacy school. Also I feel like the Exp I is probably the best all around watch (I wear dress shirts/tshirts/polos/hoodies, and it all looks fine) without telling people you're wearing a luxury item. IMHO I feel like the bigger/blingier watches (like the new ceramic Submariners), are a bit too show-off like you're too eager to prove yourself to the world. The ExpI is definitely more subtle, and will age well with you |

The White Gold in the dial of the 14270 and new 39mm really adds to the watches understated elegance
ive noticed a lot of Explorer I topics recently --- I have no idea how anyone could say something bad about it its the watch of James Bond for gods sakes

Dropping $6k on a watch at 21.. My god how things have changed since I was your age (20 years ago). I barely had 2c to rub together most days...
Anyway, as others have said - do what you want, and do it because YOU want to. Who cares what anybody else thinks.. It's your hard earned coin. I think the explorers are a great watch, and you don't see too many around compared to the rest. If you're worried about how it "looks", I'd submit that a nice watch (like a rolex) compliments a person with the right attitude very well. On the other hand, an expensive watch on an obnoxious person is not a good look... The difference? Once shows refinement and choice - the other shows a desire to be outwardly gregarious in showing off wealth. Very unattractive. |

I just bought the 116000 in SS because I wanted a quality watch with a great movement and I didn't want to attract a lot of attention.
I will likely pass it on to my son (he's 11 right now) but I'll enjoy it until then. At that point, I'll get another. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1363141617.329963.jpg I wear it everyday with jeans or dressed up for work. I use it to tell the time, not to make a statement or attract attention. Your character will speak for itself. A watch will not change who you are, you'll just have a great watch on your wrist. Post the photo when you make your choice. Cheers. W |

Thanks a lot guys, my heart is going toward explorer a lot. I feel like the submariner is a nice watch but I can't get the older version of it. I rather have the new one. Plus I feel like the explorer matches better with a suit than a submariner. I like it a lot!
You guys have been really helpful!!!! keep the posts coming :D |

You'd be surprised with the sub. It's a very versatile watch... No problem with a suit, plus it's a great watch to wear on the weekends. Not a "boardroom" watch perhaps, but certainly not too sporty for a suit. Nothing wrong with the explorer though. I might be up for one on my next purchase... Good luck with the decision. |

The white gold is on the dial face (markers and numerals) and hands. If you are accidently touching them - there may be more serious problems at hand than just potential skin irritations. For the record, I love my old-style, black-dialed Explorer (I). Good luck in making your choice

I disagree. A watch is quite a small accessory and generally, unless one hangs out in a very small judgmental social climbing crowd, it"s unnoticed. Im not saying you are part of that crowd btw. I do agree that people are judged (and even by material things) but a watch is probably really low on the list IMO. A rolex is a relatively inconspicuous luxury item...unless you're into watches.

As for the Omega, that's also a nice watch but you may likely end up wanting a Rolex anyway. As far as the Sub w/date goes, it is more expensive new, but the no date Sub is more in line price-wise. Best of luck with your choice.

The problem with white gold is religious matter. As for me as a Muslim (and I hope that's not a problem to you), I can't wear gold at all, whether it's yellow or white.
Does the sub have any white gold at all? There has been some confusions on what is white gold exactly. The one on the rolex is actually yellow gold mixed with something else like platinum right? Because sometimes people call platinum a white gold or whatsoever. |

there's a few things in a guys life you need, sport car when you are young, nice shoes and definitely a nice nice watch that fits your current lifestyle. Trust me, your lifestyle will change over time. I had a sports car then SUV and now I am driving a minivan. good start with the explorer and maybe the GMT II when you travel more etc etc. Go for it. Rolex is the best investment. If i have the chance to be 21 again, i would buy a few.

This is interesting because my understanding is Rolex sells a lot of watches in Dubai for instance. As far as platinum and WG goes, that's rarely confusing in the Rolex world. Any platinum Rolex is way out of the Exp1 price range. And I'm pretty sure that even a watch like the SS GMT2 that uses platinum in the bezel numerals has WG hands. And as far as I know, except perhaps on platty models, the hands on most models are either white or yellow gold. Maybe the best way to get an answer to this question is to start a thread asking simply "Are there any Rolex models with zero gold content at all?"
