You couldn't be talking about any further apart decisions. The Platinum Rolex is a virtual tank (weight and durability). Try one on right after a Patek Nautilus and the Patek will feel like helium. I thought the movement was a thing of beauty but felt totally underwhelmed by the feel and wrist presence.

I guess you should figure out what is most important to you, refinement or a real statement, and go with what makes you happy.

I was pining for a Patek, but after trying a few, now not so much. Same thing for the AP ROO. Some are insane over it, and it just didn't do a thing for me. Personally, I'd either get the Lange or the Rolex, but my choice would be based solely on my specific need or intended use at that time. Watches are just so personal.

Good luck.

Have to agree but no precious metal watches are really worth the prices asked IMHO all brands, and with some taking quite a large drop if paid retail.

I have owned the PP Day Dateand I can tell you this for a fact that you will lose lots of money on the day-date platinum versus any other rolex model. There is a very small market for Rolex platinum DD it does not re-sell like rolex steel or gold. If you buy a platinum DD and decide you do not like it you will lose allot of money on it. On the other hand if you purchased a Patek the loss would not be as significant. A patek is always a safer bet. All rolexes hold their value to some degree but not the platinum day date. It is however a great watch you can really enjoy and use with everything and everybody will think it is a steel rolex except a few people.

Having sampled all those brands, there's no right or wrong answer. It's entirely up to the buyer's tastes and needs. For me personally, it really depends on the discount I can get. If I'm not mistaken, the Rolex may be the cheapest after discount (at least it was for me). Regardless, the passion doesn't stop with any of them and he'll end up chasing them all. Ask me how I know.

I have yet to meet a serious collector who doesn't have at least one Rolex in their collection.

I was lucky enough to handle the Platinum DD2 yesterday and can confirm that it is one hell of a watch. But, it pales in comparison to the likes of PP, Breguet, FPJ, Lange, etc. Go for the truly haute horologie piece.

What happens if you just like the look and feel of the platinum DD best? At that price, buy what you like, not the brand or the "intricacy". Actually, that's true at any price point.

Sadly it seems high end complication pieces and precious metals go hand in hand, keeping them exclusive, but out of the hands of us mere mortals

I love the black Arabic dial platinum day-date. That would probably be my choice.

Some good points above.

With that type of money, to spend on a watch, I'd prefer a different Rolex and save some money too. That's just me.

Probly, sell my brand new DII, skip the platinum, and go for a DII in yellow gold. I can usually remember the day but, sometimes not the date. lol Plus I could always reduce the bling factor [if prefered] by wearing the watch face on inside of wrist.

Which ever you chose, at that price, you will no doubt be very happy with it.

cheers

Since your friend already has some excellent, high end timepieces, I would suggest the DD. It may not be as refined as the others, but it is well made and a classic model. In addition, the weight of a platinum watch is unique and could bring something new to your friend's collection.

A Platinum Rolex if it's something stunning and out of the ordinary, like the Ref. 1831 DD Stella dial... only 8 produced, for the last Shah of Iran to distribute as gifts (and weighs 300 grams, thank you very much). Otherwise, go for a Patek or something else high end.

Building a watch collection if I was lucky enough to be in your shoes I would do a Patek first. IMO a Rolex and a Patek should be the cornerstones of any watch collection.

When I bought my Plat DD, I had a choice of PP, Audemars etc too. I tried on a PP gold Nautilus, a gold AP RO, and a gold VC Overseas (I specifically wanted a precious metal timepiece) but the DD was the one that sung out to me. Because it's a Rolex, because of the weight, because it's a durable everyday wearer. I bought what sung to me, simple as that. I've lusted after a Plat DD for a long time, and now that I've achieved that, the next big purchase is likely to be from a different brand.

yes, the Rolex is available at -30 , maybe - 35 %

Patek ... not even 10%

Lange probably 15%

Others like Journe, Breguet , ... 20%

My thoughts precisely.

Try to discount brand name, price and perceived value for money (easy in theory I guess) and go for the one that looks best on your wrist.
