I believe he started in the movies with a sub but seems to have flipped it for an Omega.

When it comes to the novels, I always figured he wore a Submariner for his scuba dive in "Live and Let Die."

I believe Fleming used himself as a model for Bond. He was a naval commander in the second war affiliated with the M section specializing in spying. He was a heavy smoker and drinker who enjoyed gambling. He enjoyed the company of beautiful women and dressed elegantly. His watch was a Rolex explorer which I can only assume was the watch his Bond creation was meant to be wearing in his novels.

i know. my point was, would have been easy enough to name the model, particularly as he was overly familiar with it.

It depends if he's being paid to wear a certain brand at the time. If he's gonna wear whatever he wants then the Rolex of course!

Bond originally wore Rolex.

Connery - Submariner
Lazenby - Submariner and Pre-Daytona
Moore - Submariner for his first two films, then Seiko afterwards
Dalton - Tag in Living Daylights, Submariner in License to Kill
Brosnan - Omega Seamaster
Craig - Seamaster and Planet Ocean

I've actually worn the Bond ND Sub Connery wore in the earlier films. It wasn't just Cubby that gave Sean his Rolex. It was another crew member who had the same watch who also worked on American Werewolf in London. And no, he wouldn't sell it to me. It's for his grandchildren. Unfortunately it now has a service dial. I was shown alot of pics with the chap in question with Connery & on location.

It was my understanding that in the books he wore an Explorer, but after reading the posts above I guess it was never explicitly stated. Maybe I made that assumption because Fleming wore an Explorer, and Bond was sort of modeled after himself.

He puts on the Rolex Explorer.

The only reason why ppl think the Sub is because that's the model someone gave to Sean during the filming of the movie.

Just re-watched Casino Royale the other night. Here the new Bond shares which watch he wears:

(sorry couldn't find a shorter clip, you can skip to 3:23 although the clip is entertaining)

I dont know if omega is still giving money in the next movie. If rolex would be in the next film I wonder if they would go for a 114060 or the date 116610

Slightly off topic...

I heard this on a 60 Minutes episode about the James Bond movies.

According to A. Broccoli's daughter, who is involved in running the business now, they do not get paid for some product placements, but rather the vendors agree to promote the movie in their ads.

Cheers,

While its true that Flemming wore an explorer he was likely aware of the limited depth and likely did a bit if research before mentioning it in Casino Royale (al least I think it was, I read them all in a row so can't remember too well). At the time the sub had been released but he likely didn't have enough info on it to go into detail hence he just calls it a Rolex so it was very likely intended to be a Sub anyway. As others have stated, his own lifestyle plays a big (although exaggerated) in his Bond character.

Movie watches are well known: Rolexes, Omegas, etc. Book watch I remember was just "Rolex" and may just have been the Oyster Perpetual, the basic "entry" watch Rolex still sells. Book use also included being a substutute for brass knuckles.

To hear Stephen Uruquart, the President of Omega tell it, the movie version of 007 was given Omega in the last few years because the costume designer, Lindy Hemming thought that Bond would wear one, based on her personal experience in her 20's with engineers, military people, and so on, who all wore Omegas and swore by them. As reported in recent edition of Lifetime, their magazine, Omega didn't even know about it until the issue came up again in wardrobe discussions for the first Bond flick that Hemming attended. Hemming reurged her case and prevailed.

Not me. Notice the fit? Clearly that strap doesn't fit the watch.
