I don't think that's a good tack to take. Several members here work in ADs and would take exception to that statement.

So sensitive

Why even give it second thought what a 21 year old salesman tells you when it comes to judge mental statements like "Rolex is for older people"? It's a waste of your mental energy - have more confidence in your own judgement.

Wow, sounds like the Toyota finance guy trying to sell me the extended warranties when he said "These things are built with the electronics of 21 iPods. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them. Why wouldn't you want to buy an extended warranty?"

Needless to say, I wrote a letter to the dealership and corporate HQ for Toyota US. Hopefully, he's representing another brand by now.

An open note to all ADs. Since your sales people feel Rolex is outdated.

I'll pay .10 on the $ to help you out.

When I play my Fender Stratocasters, and Gibson Les Pauls Pauls, I don't feel outdated. Even though they were designed well over 60 years ago. Classic designs stand the test of time.

Ditto here, except it was 1987 IIRC.

"Dated" versus "timeless" is a matter of taste.

Timeless implies taste.

Younger guys these days like to thumb their noses at Rolex, because it's a more expensive watch than they can readily afford, and has connotations nowadays of wealth and luxury that they don't yet feel comfortable embracing, so they find reasons mentally to write it off, to try to convince themselves that they don't really want one. It's like the guy who can only afford a Corolla right now, so he tries to convince himself that he really doesn't want a BMW, and that BMWs are passé/unreliable/overpriced/overrated/only for guys who follow the crowd/for yuppies/for old men, etc. Of course, a few years down the road, you know perfectly well he's going to be driving a 5 series.

A lot of people look down on Rolex and find some reasons not to like it, because it is so well-known and they want to be "unique," and not "mindlessly following trends," until they have gone through a dozen other watches and finally appreciate just how well-designed, well-engineered, and well-made a Rolex actually is.

Sales don't mean anything.

This is the wrong forum to pose this kind of question. Without commenting on rolex quality one way or the other, the brand does skew older. The rolex forum isn't the place where you're going to find owners agreeing that their watches are for "old people".

I agree that many rolex designs are timeless but the DJ and DD specifically have designs that the younger crowd doesn't tend to appreciate.

At the end of the day, it's just personal preference. Who cares what a salesman or anyone else says?

I guess when I bought my first at 21 I was an "old, outdated thought filled guy" If so, sure glad I am.

They would be the very rare exception to the statement. I am sure they know they are the exception by their typical Rolex clientele.

That kid working at the AD is going to have a difficult time in life, methinks...

Or he should just totally change professions.

Let me guess, he was wearing a 48mm Diesel or Kenneth Cole watch that looked like a dinner plate on a bracelet.
