Its definitely nice looking, but for that price level I definitely think I would go with something more exotic...FP Journe or PP.

PP would be white gold 3970 - both watches are very nice and neither can be knocked in anyway whatsoever

Not that I can ever afford any of these two beast but I must say that Daytona is a very special piece. I love Patek also but not that model, I love the the world time.

SteelerFan65, congratulations on your watch. I have a question about the brown bezel and sundials.

In terms of chronograph function, is that color combination more legible then, say, the White dial SS or Black dial SS Daytona?

I have a white dial SS Daytona and, while I love the watch overall, must concede that legibility issues exist. So, if I really wanted/needed to use a mechanical chronograph for sporting purposes, where precise and rapid time keeping was necessary, I would select something else, such as a Speedmaster or Navitimer.

I suspect that the platinum Daytona, given its color combination, would be more legible than the SS versions. If that is so, then, ironically, it might make a more practical chronograph then its SS siblings.

I am curious to know ( and this may sound like a stupid question so please excuse me ), is there actually a very obvious visual difference between Platinum and very well polished SS other than the weight? Because I have seen the Platinum DD2 but only in boutique lighting conditions and it is very difficult to tell them apart from other SS Rolex just by visual. In fact, I can tell SS from WG easier due to the yellow shine in WG. I have unfortunately yet to see a Platinum watch under natural light.

I would pick the PP 3970 over the platinum Daytona.

It's hard to tell on the polished surfaces but when you look at the brushed surfaces, platinum appears brighter than steel. Ymmv.

the Platinum Daytona is seriously tempting - if one can negotiate a good deal on it the price point to me seems quite fair.

This is a solid platinum watch and bracelet with the exclusive glacier blue dial - so something that will always be immediately recognisable to any Rolex aficionado as the flagship Daytona model.

For Ken to explicitly state that this is his favourite watch yet means that it must be totally amazing in real life.

Infact this has inspired me to head down to my local AD today to check one out in the flesh.

Ken - Congrats again on a fantastic incoming

It's a stunning watch for sure on chrono showing up already at 20-28% off retail before negotiating further. ADs won't budge on price but if they did give 20% off then I guess not too bad a deal for daytona.

2 amazing watches.
Ken summed it up best.
I like that the Plat D being a Rolex sport watch, there is pretty much no worries.
Patek is gorgeous , but will always be more of a dress watch for me. Even when talking SS models.

If you look at the two in person you will immediately notice all the differences, you can't go wrong with it.

It is easy to read with the color combo...you are correct. Again for me this color combo sets the watch apart and truly is breathtaking in the flesh. The dial mesmerizes me much like my platinum glacier diamond DD dial. It changes colors in the light and the chestnut brown is such a rich color with the glacier/ice blue. Again as I stated for me this is my ultimate watch and favorite one I have ever owned--modern or vintage and any brand including Patek...Yes Patek! With that again have a great day all!

Incredibly high praise, especially coming from you, Ken. Very interesting to read this. I would have though a couple of your ALSs would rank higher (Zeitwerk?). Just goes to show how awesome the platinum Daytona is. The watch is for sure!

Enjoy!!

Ken as ever some interesting and very thought provoking comments , stunning watch , i prefer some of the combinations in yellow gold and white , but theres no disputing its a stunning combo that wont be overlooked by those who know. and actually is fairly low profile for those who dont know ,,, never thought i could say low profile and plat daytona in the same sentence ,,,

Yes I think that's what the OP meant as the plat PP is much more expensive even preowned.

This sentence says it all, coming from one of the most respected and competent collectors available here on TRF.

To add my 2cents, I also had the opportunity to try the plat and I loved the look immensely but the real feeling was that I had something weird hanging on my wrist. Probably because I never owned a solid gold o platinum watch and thus I'm not used to the weight.

Anyway, I'll never be able to afford one so it's not a big deal, I will continue to just look at these awesome pics and enjoy them

Luxury items are never a necessity. Value is in the eye of the beholder/purchaser, and trying to compare the Plat Daytona to that Patek isn't even rational. The platinum Daytona is a Rolex sports watch through and through made out of precious metal. The Patek with a more complicated movement and dress look is a different animal. I love the look of the glacier dial and brown ceramic...a different move that I believe was well done.

Great thread. I really didnt like the Platinum Daytona when it was first released but it has really grown on me. I have never been a fan of the huge price tag and this watch is never going to be in my price range but I have grown to really appreciate how gorgeous it is.
